Don Mattrick moment. LOL

"As we look at Nintendo Switch 2 and you think about the feature sets that I talked about ... we believe that the pricing is appropriate for the value of the machine and the gameplay experience overall," he said.

"We recognize there are some people that may not be able to afford [the Switch 2's] price point. That's why we wanted to make the other Switch platforms available, so [people] still have an opportunity to come into our gaming universe, be a part of these characters in these worlds, and see value, if you will, in whatever rung of the platform they come in."

Don Mattrick was a visionary lmao. But looking at twitter responses the nintendo drones been working hard trying to convince everyone about pricing and why Browser statement is good lmao.

This is so much like the OG Xbox One reveal. Yeah gamers are giving Nintendo backlash but it is still nowhere near as bad as what the Xbox One got when even game journalist were dunking on it.

This just proves that this CEO is out of touch with the gaming community. They hired a non-gamer, investing greedy asshole.

For those who don't get the reference between Doug and Don, this is what Don Mattrick said at E3 2013 about buying Xbox 360 if you don't like what Xbox One is doing:

Loading Video...

In other words, Doug Bowser did his best Don Mattrick impersonation and I don't know if Doug was around E3 2013 or wasn't aware Don did this already and it flop hard on Don's head after that statement. Even Geoff couldn't believe what Don said in his face.

This "frankness" from our corporate overloads, oligarchs, and politicians about how things are going to be tough for "some of us" is concerning.

Xbone reveal hurts cause Sony strategically dunked on it with the whole $100 cheaper price and game sharing video that went absolutely viral. Xbox or Sony could pounce nintendo for some internet brownie points but poking fun at delusional fanbase like nintendo might have unintended consequences.

Brings back memories of when Xbox shot itself in the foot with "just keep playing Xbox 360 then" or however it was said.

Honestly this PR disaster at Nintendo just makes me miss Reggie. Looking back then, Reggie and Iwata were very decent for Nintendo. Not really sure what I can say about the current leadership at Nintendo.

It's actually good timing that they're still supporting the Switch 1 with big new games, since a ton of people are going to be priced out of physical goods of any kind while Trump is in office.

I wonder how long Nintendo supports the Switch. I got a Switch Lite about 5 years ago and barely played any of the exclusives. Though it's vast library gives me plenty to play.

I don't think what Don Mattrick said was weird or wrong, and I don't think what Doug Bowser says is wrong either. It makes perfect sense. If you don't like or can't afford the latest product, don't buy it. There are other older alternatives if you want a gaming machine, and Doug just reaffirmed that their support for Switch 1 isn't stopping.

I would most likely say the same thing in their shoes. "Oh, you don't like it? Lucky that we don't force you buy it then. Have a nice day."

I mean one was literally about the price:

Sony going: if you want a PS3, be prepared to get a second job (though in this economy I think a third job would be more apt).

Or Nintendo going: yeah it costs a lot, better deal with it. We ain't bringing Reggie back.

And Don Mattrick was clearly referencing something else:

If you don't like the always online DRM we have for our new Xbox, then stick with the old one.

Which was a dick move and a kick in the balls. I hate Don Mattrick as much as I hate stepping in shit.

I don't get why it was a dick move? What should Don have done? He's not the one making the console or is the sole person designing the Xbox. Microsoft decided they wanted their console to be always online, don't understand why we should blame Don for that? He mentioned that there are alternatives that aren't always online if you don't like it. Is that evil? Should he just have said, "don't get it then"? Would that have been better? Any spokeperson from MS would've said the same thing.

What's weird to me is how entitled people feel to gaming machines catering to them.

I see your point, but that is not what I'm saying at all.

Don Mattrick was in charge of Xbox at the time and he basically abandoned the idea of investing in solid studios or exclusives. He gave the world Halo/Forza/Gears on endless repeat and Kinect.

He set the Xbox brand back and focussed on non gamer things. Like TV.

So yeah I will call that out and yeah I do believe he is the worst thing to happen to Xbox.

Isn't the point of a console to bring unique experiences?

What's the point of making your console always online and making sure people can't buy second hand games?

Is that entitlement? If so how is it so?

What does he mean by "other Switch platforms"? Why the plural? The only other Switch platform I'm aware of is the original Switch.

1. That's something I know nothing about. Sounds lame.

2. Sure, but I think the point with a console is to bring in money first and foremost. MS thought making it always online and make people not buy second hand would make them more of it. Also sounds lame though. I was just talking about what he said in that moment, I know nothing about the guy aside from that, what he did, how much power he had over the brand, etc. So I'm not the best person to be talking about this. :P Now I know more, though.

That's a misquote, actually. Kutaragi said people would "work more hours" to get a PS3. Which, is still a red flag before a console debuts either way.

OOF! Not a good line. Real pride before a fall type comment we have seen so many times before in this business. And with the impending revised price of the Switch 2 for the US.....ouch!

He is technically correct but it's a real "stay in your lane peasant" line. For a companies whose successful consoles have generally been on the cheaper end at release....playing a dangerous game their Nintendo.

I suspect this might be because they want the original Switch to keep selling and eventually break the PS2's record... And then they'll announce a price drop for Switch 2.

The idea is, you want to sell as much on the next-gen console and not trying to tell everyone by just sticking with the previous gen console. I get what Doug is saying but he said it the wrong way. It's pretty clear to me that Nintendo isn't truly ready to jump into next-gen, they clearly wanna ride the Switch as long as they can cause its still selling well despite everyone knows the new one is right around the corner.

Reggie explains why he forced Iwata to pack-in Wii Sports in with the Wii. Nintendo was intending to sell Wii Sports separately at $50 world wide, but Reggie said it's best to be a free pack-in game. Miyamoto hated the idea and was offended by Reggie because he told him that the developers worked hard making Wii Sports and that Reggie-San had no idea the time and cost to make it.

@osan0: 🤣 yes...there are a lot of dumb peasants and you know what he's right anyways. If you can't afford it, then don't buy it. Im saying this to people to get your shit together. A switch 2 isn't worth going into credit card debt over, or tapping into home equity, or whatever else. It costs as much as a ps5 and xbox series x, and the games cost twice as much. Let that sink in for a moment, really sink in.
