Poll Best horror of the modern age (63 votes)

Resident Evil 2 (remake) 21%
Resident Evil 3 (remake) 2%
Resident Evil 7 11%
Resident Evil 8 3%
The Forest 2%
Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners 2%
Phasmophobia 2%
Halflife: Alyx 3%
Little Nightmares (1/2) 3%
Alien: Isolation 19%
Until Dawn 10%
The Exorcist: Legion 0%
Dead By Daylight 2%
Outlast series 5%
Five Nights at Freddy's 0%
Layers Of Fear 2%
Other 13%

Hello. Decided to make a low hanging "best" low-hanging fruit thread.

Some games listed will have an advantage and win on the basis of a wider net having played them, while others will unjustly be shafted because polls are more of a popularity contest than objective quality. Eh.

Alyx is debatable, but would classify it as more horror than FPS.

-

From the list there probably go with Walking Dead: Saints And Sinners when it comes to straight up classical horror. None of the games listed their aside from Saints And Sinners actually gave a sense of unease.

I went with Alien Isolation because the first 5 hours of the game was great.

This forum is still buggy as hell.

Other: Dead Space, and Dead Space still haunts me to this day but Alien Isolation comes seconds for me but Dead Space is a classic horror game I enjoy going back to on every Halloween. Dead Space has age like fine horror wine.

Silent Hill P.T (It is not a full length game so probably does not count)

Probably between RE2R, Little Nightmares 1&2 and Alien Isolation for me from that list.

Haven't played RE2R yet. Vote goes to Alien Isolation.

Amnesia The Dark Descent scared me more than any other game. not sure if it counts as modern though.

in terms of being really good games, Dead Space 1/2, Soma and RE2 Remake get my vote

Voted Resident Evil 2 Remake. Just a really excellent all around horror game. Would definitely give shoutouts to Dead Space and The Evil Within games.

SOMA. The horror is primarily psychological, and even then, it's fairly subtle, at least, paradoxically, the heavy-hitting aspects. Doesn't really hit you until you've sat and thought about it. Example: the ending. Yeesh.

And I really love The Evil Within 1 and 2. The games get a lot of hate, but they are legitimate nightmares conceived in a madman's psyche. Yes, Shinji is a madman. Love the dude. The fact he had a limited role on the sequel did not tarnish his original vision imo.

Scariest game for me was Subnautica.

Best full horror game was RE2R.

Best potential horror game, P.T.

Voted The Forest because they used original monster designs and not generic zombies or monsters from 30 year old movies...

Anyhow... Subnatica destroys every game on that list when it comes to scare factor imo, anticipation/build up and atmosphere is way more important than any amount of gore and creepy monsters.

Have this installed and looking forward to checking it out.

Although that's specifically why like Saints And Sinners. It emulates traditional zombies almost perfectly. Not about gunning down hundreds or them being easily dispatched piñatas. The slower pace, heavy combat sequences where 1 = fine 2+ = problematic combined with limited resources and a ticker counting down to explore said areas creates a wonderful sense of uneasiness.

As the game progresses, the resources deplete and the enemy count increases. Keeping tension throughout the entire campaign run, emulating the deprivation and threat the movies typically exhibit towards the final third, the problems typically caused by the human characters.

Having said that not perfect, Alyx perfected gun combat while this still has clunk. The melee is dope though.

I voted RE7 but I must be totally completely wrong as Ghost has voted for the same thing. I just don't know how I managed to get it all so horribly wrong?

Ill vote Resident Evil 7 because its just a great game that is also pretty scary.

But the most terrified I ever been playing a game is Slenderman: 8 pages. Its simple, stupid, low tech, with very lil gameplay mechanics... you can even call it a gimic. But that music and the tension just continues to ramp up to the point where Im terrified to look around a corner or walk into a building.

Visage is the only horror game that had me actually spooked. It's easily the closest 'successor' to the PT demo (assuming we can't put PT as it's a trailer demo).

I would say not mention dead space is kind of blashempy but on the other hand, there are so many good horror games out there and you can't make a poll of 2 - 3 pages long.

@davillain-: In that case I'll definitely give dead space a go, it's been on my list.

Is there an ideal platform to play it on?

P.T.

If that counts

Also Visage or Lust from Beyond are pretty cool, the later having a pretty cool concept behind it... although dont play it with your parents or children in the room. Its very kinky :p

SOMA did great psychological horror, pure dread. Plus it had a really unique setting/story.

Haven't played most of those. If we're talking atmosphere, I'll go with Alien Isolation, Amnesia:TDD or Soma. PT demo was fun as well. Sure there are a ton of great indie horror games too but I don't know what they are.

Yeah, and the transfer of consciousness concept - "flip of the coin"

Trying to respond to this:

Alan Wake was my favorite game on the Xbox 360.

Alan Wake is not even close to the best horror game ever made and is almost not even a horror game.

I had some serious existential questions for the better part of a month after playing through that game.

It also helped me further in life, I think. So that is something unlike any other horror game has done for me.

I voted for RE2 because i think is a fantastic example of an old horror game being updated for current tech with great results.

However, the lack of Bloodborne is dusturbing. That game is scarier than most on that list. The atmosphere, the enemy design and even the lore is as horror as you can get.
