The consensus on the fourth installment of Metal Gear Solid seems to be, quite frankly, that it sucks. I personally loved it; though I don't think it's as good as Snake Eater, I did find it to be very fun and entertaining. I loved the multiple settings; each was on a different continent, which made the game feel like a true epic. I also enjoyed the over-the-top plot twists and revelations, such as the cadaver being Solidus Snake instead of Big Boss, and Liquid Ocelot being the result of hypnosis and not Liquid's transplanted arm. I also enjoyed the incorporation of private military companies and the subsequent war economy into the story. As far as the emotional aspect of the game, I thought it was very well executed, coming quite close to that of Snake Eater. The most emotional parts of the game, for me, were when half of Snake's face got severely burned, when what seemed to be Big Boss's corpse was desecrated by Liquid, and when Snake and Big Boss made peace.

The downsides of the game, in my opinion, were the ability to upgrade and purchase weapons from Drebin at any point in the game even though he was nowhere nearby (WTF?), the clunky over-the-shoulder shooting mechanics, and...I guess that's it.

Anyhow, what did you think of MGS 4 ?

It doesn't suck.. it's just popular, that's the problem for some people.

You're right, popularity is the main point of offense for many people.  MGS4 is just another playing card in the fanboy deck so to speak.

But a lot of us have legit reasons for our distaste in the game.

I'm sort of playing it right now. I'll probably start it over to actually pay attention to what happens this time.

It was fantastic at release but it hasn't aged well. All of them were fantastic at release and aged poorly. MGS1 is almost unplayable by now. This gen there were so many third person shooters than came out with smooth and fluid gameplay; if you try to go back and play MGS4, it feels, as you said, clunky.

As a shooter any MGS game feels clunky, even on day one.  As a stealth game, MGS2 and MGS3 havent aged much at all.

Most of the "haters" know a good deal more about the series than all these SW cheerleaders.

It was a good as far as games go, but as far as Metal Gear Solid games go, it sucked. One of the biggest disappointments for me this generation.

And if you think MGS4 is a masterpiece you never played an earlier MGS game. OT: Good gameplay for an MGS game. Horrible, horrible, HORRIBLE story by any sort of standard. Cows would shit all over it if it was multiplat. A story where everything is explained with nanomachines and a gag character becomes a pretty important part of the plot is wretched. And cutscenes interrupt gameplay more frequently than previous games (the entire ending cutscene is like an hour and a half, what the hell)

I traded my copy in a few months back towards a WiiU.  They only offered me a few bucks for it, but I just didnt want it tainting my game collection any longer.

How does that make you feel?

MGS4 is the same type of game as Uncharted: A third person shooter with some stealthy or more accurately, sneaky, elements; and Uncharted 2 obliterated MGS4.

Also, MGS2 and MGS3 have aged because the shooting mechanic is just plain unpleasant to use. It doesn't matter if those are more stealth oriented, shooting is still a pretty decent part of the game.

You cant be serious with that Uncharted comparison.

Sorry, but I dont typically shoot anything in MGS games besides bosses.  I got through MGS4 with no kills the last time I played.  I dont think you understand how these games work lol.

Beyond that I have no trouble with the shooting in any MGS game.  Playing different =/= playing poorly.  Not every game is supposed to have an arcade fps feel.

Stealth was handled best in MGS2/3. 4 has generally smoother mechanics but Octocamo felt too automated for me. There wasn't a huge focus on stealth-oriented gameplay throughout the entirety of MGS4, either; there are some moments in Act I and II but there are a lot more where you're forced into alert phases: from Act III onwards it's pretty much entirely action-oriented. Don't know how anyone can say MGS2 has aged poorly, though. The mechanics were very well thought-out and hold up remarkably well 12 years later. I'd say it's MGS3 and 1 that's aged the most.

Overall I agree with everything you said.

But while the stealth in MGS4 is more of an afterthought, you can still clear the entire game with no kills and no alerts.  Its just not very fun.  More fun than gunning your way through, but still lame.

I thought the storyline and game itself was very entertaining, It did have pretty bad controls though. I remember the ending was nice, I loved how long and exhausting that last fight was, damn!

Story > sh!t Retcons > sh!t Settings > mostly sh!t (Act 1 and Act 4 for nostalgia) Cutscenes > mostly sh!t Gameplay > depends on where, but mostly good Fan service before ending > AWWW YEAH It's a sh!t game with some great moments few and far between. It's such a shame that it could have been so much better. And my god that ending. Mass Effect 3's was better. Yes, I went there.

it was not that great.

the gamplay was mostly broken from the moment you start playing by them giving you a one shot "kill" tranq gun.

also i thought the smoking monkey and the poop jokes and snake upskirting that chick and the shyt like that is just flat out stupid.

Lol. Getting through an MGS with no kills means putting enemies to sleep with A GUN. They are the same type of game, dealwithit 46247-Deal-with-it-lakers-bros-gif-sbQM.

The "poop jokes" is a series-spanning gag (that is really an easter egg in previous games) meant as comic relief. It's only funny to people who have played the other games.

It was a great game, but worthy of a 10? To me, no. Because it wasn't even as good as 3. 3 was the pinnacle of the series and even it did not get a 10. Not maybe if the entire game had been like Act 2...

Game was disappointing but good. It had its moments like the opening 2 acts of gameplay, the stuff in Shadow Moses, that final boss fight. The story and writing were EXTRA terrible though. I mean christ was that game overbearing about everything. Still I had my fun with that game, but really disappointing after the highs of Metal Gear Solid 3.

MGS4 is an absolutely brilliant game.  I loved all of it.  Playing it, I felt like Sony had just won.  I would put MGS4 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 as the best games of this generation, no question.  They would rank high on a list of best games of all time.

Even the cutscenes are great in MGS4.  I felt like there was a great story there about nano-machines and the future of weaponry and control.  It's just too long winded, but I have a hard time condemning a game for doing the cutscenes wrong.  To call the game a movie is beyond stupid.  There is so much gameplay there.

It definitely had replay value but it had less gameplay than its older brothers. Even if we add sh*t like Act 3.

I really didn't "get it". Some of the cutscenes are so long and weird. What was the point of having a wedding on a tarmac? As for the gameplay, a lot of missions involving sneaking from A to B. Its extremely annoying that there was no restart checkpoint button in a stealth game.

i currently am too sleepy to go into detail but mgs4 is one of the greatest games ever made

mgs 3 > mgs4 > mgs1 > mgs2

cons:

-didnt like much that everything was explained by nanomachines

-really long cutscenes, seriously.

pros

-everthing else.

MGS4>3>2>1.

I believe each game has only gotten better. And everyone who is saying its "s***", "it sucks" etc should not be posting here. You should never be game reviewers as you would obviously give it 0/10 scores.

How did the story suck? It didn't! The story was great and epic. Minor critism is length of cutscenes and perhaps over explanation.

Gameplay is the best in the series.

Graphics is the best in the series.

Sound effects like guns/explosions are the best in the series.

Voice acting is best in the series.

Complaining that the game is too short? LMAO. EVERY MGS game is short. Always been like that. MGS1 can be beaten in 3 hours. MGS2 around 4 or so. MGS3 was probably the longest at 7-8 hours?(probably less because I'm not the fastest at this game). And MGS4 was 4 hours. But at this point, who cares about game length as long as the game is awesome? No one cares that CoD has 4 hour campaigns.

And I HATE the hate MGS2 gets. It's a masterpiece and it murdered MGS1 in quality(In before fanboys buh buh the mgs1 characters/story/setting were better!). Yeah, but the rest of MGS1 pales in comparison to MGS2. And MGS2's story was amazing. It was gripping and kept me at the edge of my seat with boats sinking, russian betrayals, talking arms, metal gears, president kidnappings, shells exploding, fatmen laughing, bi vampires, sexy little emma emmerich, badass solidus and such a DAMN GREAT ENDING THAT BLEW MY FREAKING MIND! Solidus's epic speech and jack/raiden snake talking at the end was so freaking good. How can you not love this game? I didnt even mention the crazy colonel AI, fortune and all the little easter eggs.

But, since you played as raiden is sucked right? Grow up. I loved every second of MGS2 and i never once had a problem playing as raiden. It's only years later i go on the internet and learn about all this hate and I just laugh at the haters. Your missing out on a great game because you have a poor attitude. Grow up.

Simple statements like these make me waste hours.  Not doing it this time.

Kojimas magnum opus, a work beyond words.  A work that transcends the medium.  Resting high upon its throne, poised to remain the epicenter of all that represents great literature, MGS4 can not be stopped.

10/10 goty #SDC, you mad?

it was not that great.

the gamplay was mostly broken from the moment you start playing by them giving you a one shot "kill" tranq gun.

also i thought the smoking monkey and the poop jokes and snake upskirting that chick and the shyt like that is just flat out stupid.

The "poop jokes" is a series-spanning gag (that is really an easter egg in previous games) meant as comic relief. It's only funny to people who have played the other games.

Poop jokes weren't the problem. I thought Johnny Sasaki was funny in MGS1 and 3. The problem arose in 4 when he actually became a legit, fleshed-out character that romanced Meryl, and his stomach problems were explained by his lack of nanomachines.
