Since these 3 FF games are on the PSN network, and I am probably going to be waiting until doomsday for Sony to do some kind of update to either release the PS2 FF's on store or backwards compatible, i've decided to give the originals a try. Which would you recommend? I've never played any. I played the first few bits of FF7 pc version one. But barely very far into the story. So what's your opinion?

Out of all those 3 FF, I like FF9 the most. It feels like a classic Final Fantasy with no Scifi crap mix in it. If you prefer FF to be more Scifi then pick 7 or 8.

they are all very good and hence, if you can afford to, you should get all three. :) imo all three have respective charms and flaws. FF7 was the apex of the franchise, and it was best known for its epic tale and memorable characters. however, in terms of gameplay both VIII and IX were more sophisticated. VIII has a very open-ended and rewarding character customization system and arguably the best mini game the franchise has yet to offer, while IX hearkens back to the earlier FFs and emphasizes on job/class, and thus appeals more to the 4th gen gamers.

Just play them in order, they are all exceptional games. I liked 7 the most, with 9 close behind and 8 was last out of the 3 for me in terms of my preference.

I've only played 7 and 8 out of those three but I preferred 8. FF7 hasn't aged well at all because how much it focuses on story. This is usually a good thing in games but since FF7 has no voice acting, there's a whole lot of reading little text boxes. You don't realize how crucial voice acting is to a story until it's gone. There's some other things that make it feel pretty dated but that was the main thing for me.

perna13

Yes. You can purchase the game with your credit card and download it to your PS3 hard drive. You will have it forever as long as you don't delete your account. Also, if you delete the game to clear up space then you can always return to the PSN Store and re-download the game onto your PS3 (just go to the top where it says, "view downloads" and it'll let you re-download the game free of charge).

Also, don't worry about backwards compatibility. That's not necessary for PS1 games considering every PS3 (from launch to present day) has PS1 backward compatibility but only some have PS2.

P.S. Final Fantasy IX is my favorite too. :D

In regards to the original post, it really depends on what you're into. If you're into a deep, interesting story but don't mind the archaic graphics then buy Final Fantasy VII. If you're interested in a more realistic (well, moreso than the rest) story with a good but complex battle system, play Final Fantasy VIII. If you're interested in a more light-hearted, fun story with possibly the BEST Final Fantasy character (that's right, fans, I'm talking about Vivi) with some very artistic art style, decent graphics even for today, and a more "Final Fantasy" feel to it then play Final Fantasy IX.

Overall, all three are great but personally I'd say IX is the best, followed by VII, and then VIII.

I always though me and my friend were the only ones who liked IX. But im glad other people agree. I hate all the sci fi stuff brought into the others. Thats why for me its almost a tie between IX and X. But IX takes the cake by a fraction

Contrary to common preference, I'd actually recommend you get VIII. It had one of the most addictive mini-games. The battle system was a blast to play AND look at. The Junction System is one of the deepest and most effective ways to power up among other FF games. The story was phenomenal. Everything about that game was deep and engrossing as you would expect from any Final Fantasy game. Honestly speaking, there is a tiny amount of bias in that I got too bored to finish both VII and IX. Plus VII has become incredibly overrated. It's not the core game of the series since every game is different, and I really didn't think the story stood out as much as other games.

Final Fantasy 7 is by far the best. 8 was alright but it couldn't quite reach the bar 7 had set so high. FF9 is the second best choice out of the three if you plan in the future to buy another one.

FF 7 is WAY too overhyped. It's really not that great. FF8 is an interactive movie basically. FF9 is an old school FF all the way. It's probably my favorite since the almighty FF6.

i liked 7 the best, ff 9 is a good game but the "equipment gives you abilities" had already been played out in a couple rpg's by then (ff6 & 7 had similar systems with espers and materia) so i was a bit bored with that.

They aren't particularly expensive, so if you can get all 3, do so. But I would say 8 or 9 were my favourites. Probably 8 because it has the fondest memories.

Personally, I hate voice acting. I'd rather imagine what the characters sound like although I do see its uses, like in cutscenes for instance. Aside from that, games take much longer to make and localize because they have to be translated and voice acted in "umpteen" different languages." It also becomes very expensive for developers and in turn it takes dev teams 5 years to make a game. Think about it, the artists can't animate the mouths and voices until the script and actors have taken part. It's the rate-limiting step. (C'mon KINGDOM HEARTS 3!) FF 7,8,9 were some of the best in the series. I'd say throw some darts and just pick one. No matter what you won't go wrong. 7 is my favorite.

I'd say Final Fantasy VIII. Its the first RPG I've played and it still manages to impress me. One of my favourite games (of all time). I've played FFVII, and it was interesting but it didn't do it for me. FFIX I didn't like at ALL.

ff7 iirc is the longest and has the most extra stuff like chocobo breeding and racing ect. fantastic game . ff8 is eather a game you love or hate. i thought it was a very good game but the draw system can be a chore. ff9 i think was prob the shortest "dont quote me on that im just going by memory" i think it had the smallest cast of playable characters and def had a more light hearted feel to it. more cartoony like characters but was very cool. really i dont think you can go wrong with any of them. id just start with ff7 and work your way up. ;)

also if you have not all ready done so you must play ff6 called ff3 in the usa when it was on snes. Its 16 bit graphics so be ready for that. it my all time fav game. i dont think its on VC but there was a playstation version, snes,pc,gameboy advance ect.
