i think if  apple stopped making computers (while still making software and ipods) and let us build custom PCs to run OS X (legally), windows would become obsolete.

NTM decent games. I don't actually mind Apple hardware, but, yeah you should be able to build a Mac.

Mac isn't the be all and end all of computing. It is actually pretty primative now. They're making it too simple.

When OSX first came out it was spectacular, especially compared to XP, but now it has barely changed in years but windows has.

How many of you actually use a mac? I have both a mac and pc, i would choose pc any day.

O and as for OSX vs Leopard or whatever I don't think anyone will care. Apple comes out with a new OS practically every year it's not a big deal anymore, in fact it's highway robbery, people should stop complaining about Vista's price and look at what the poor bastards who own a mac are paying.

Edit: O and why do they keep naming them after cats? Seriously what the hell is up with that?

what are your thoughts on the leapord update

I think like all of the yearly updates to OSX, they bring not a lot that is new to the operating system really, maybe a few odd features, but nothing imporant really. Nothing like the jump from Windows 2000 to xp, and xp to Vista. OSX just has minor upgrades.

the upgrades might be minor, but that also means you dont have to upgrade. apple might release a new update every couple years, but at the base of it all, its still OS X. even if you want to switch, its only $100. microsoft starts from scratch almost everytime they make a new OS. you have to pay a few hundred dollars every some odd years for a total overhaul, and after you've done that, you need to wait another year for it to be fully compatible with everything you need. i know you guys are expecting me to say BUY A MAC or something, but i've always been a windows user and i just think apples release strategy is better.

i think it would be absolutely awesome if we could build our own PCs and be able to run windoews or mac. we wouldnt have to buy over priced apple computers, and we wouldnt be forced to use crappy windows operating systems.

It would fail like in the past, Apple tried the mac-clone path back in the heyday of the power pc, it failed.

Wouldn't work because they make a huge portion of their profit on hardware. Take the iPod for instance. Costs Apple like $70 to make the 30GB iPod video, and they mark it up to $250. That's the reason why the MacBook retails for a minimum of $1300, profit.

Except everyone would pirate OS X instead and they would run out of money much faster. Apple's business model relies on making a profit on the HARDWARE sales... why else do you think that they can sell you a full copy of OS X for less than the upgrade price of Vista Home Basic? They don't make the profit on the software... they make it on the HARDware... to Apple, even if you pirate every version of MacOS afterward, they still made a profit with the hardware. To lose the hardware end of it would effectively kill their bottom line.

what you say is true. even the owner of dell(which is the #1 computer company in america) said that if apple let them use their software they wouldn't use microsoft's software

I will put the money in my wallet right now that he only said that right before they went into negotiation with Microsoft to pressure them into giving them a better deal per license they install on each new computer they sell... why else do you think Windows is so damned expensive @ retail? Basically everyone buying a regular copy for themselves is subsidizing these corporate twits that are getting all the deep discounts.

Each new release of OS X has *INCREASED* performance, fixed bugs, and added a buttload of new features. Each new version of Windows increases system requirements, adds more holes for hackers to exploit, and effectively kills half your software library. Out of the box, Vista has no OpenGL support whatsoever; for that matter, they dropped EAX and hardware audio acceleration support in Vista, too. I myself never realized just how flat out sick I was of Windows and Microsoft's anti-trust measures until I finally got to use a Mac with a release copy of OS X installed (the betas were really bad :? ). The more time I got to spend with them, the better so much of it just felt over all the years I've had to put up with Windows. Nowadays, it honestly feels like the only reason I still have to mind Windows is not because I want to, but simply because I have to. I was eagerly awaiting the C2D update of the MacBook Pro line, after seeing that Apple went nVidia with the 24" iMac... but the fact that Apple went ATi again with the MBP effectively killed my opportunity to go ahead and purchase one.

Then don't buy the upgrade every year... besides, on the face of things you wouldn't notice a whole lot changed between each annual upgrade... you notice them when you skip a year or two... then it becomes much more apparent how much was improved over a prior release of the MacOS.

the upgrades might be minor, but that also means you dont have to upgrade. apple might release a new update every couple years, but at the base of it all, its still OS X. even if you want to switch, its only $100. microsoft starts from scratch almost everytime they make a new OS. you have to pay a few hundred dollars every some odd years for a total overhaul, and after you've done that, you need to wait another year for it to be fully compatible with everything you need. i know you guys are expecting me to say BUY A MAC or something, but i've always been a windows user and i just think apples release strategy is better.

Microsoft *DOES NOT* start out fresh every year. Windows 2000 = NT 5.0 Windows XP = NT 5.1 Windows Vista = NT 5.2 That's not starting new; certainly not any newer than the difference between the annual OS X revisions... but the fact of the matter is, Apple has implemented a lot of new features, applications and updates over each of those annual releases that are only NOW starting to show up as available for Windows Vista, and Windows Vista only... strange, because a good majority of these features are the kind of thing that could just as easily had been made available as optional downloads for Windows XP and earlier. Not to mention you're all forgetting that Apple has tried doing the "clone" route in the past. In short, Apple lost $200 on the sale of each non-Apple Mac, AT MINIMUM. Apple also tried releasing a console for gaming as well... the Pippin was effectively a still-born, and never made it outside of Japan, as only Bandai ever actually produced units.

I thought when Mac OS X first came out they used the G3 processors, then I thought for Tiger you couldnt use anything less than the G4? And soon you will only be able to use Core Duo.

So mac does need hardware upgrading.

And also, would you really want to be running 5 year old hardware for the latest operating sytem. With microsoft requiring a hardware upgrade it pushes along the computer industry.

Considering Xcode (the de-facto IDE for developing OS X applications) makes it ridiculously easy to create a universal binary that can run on PPC or intel Macs, I doubt that PPC would be fading away entirely. OS X does pretty much require a minimum of a PowerPC Mac (before, it was Motorola 68k processors...), but at least per my observations, MacOS tends to be much more usable and functional even on a low-end Mac as opposed to Windows on a low-end PC. And as I have stated in other times, OS X is one OS that seems to more linearly improve performance by simply stuffing as much physical RAM as you can buy. Windows gets faster with more RAM, sure... but it starts to taper off after a certain limit for most people. With OS X, the OS just seems to get faster and respond faster as you can install more RAM. Many of the Mac-specific benches regarding to this show huge boosts going from 1GB to 2... even more than what it was going from 512MB to a gig of system RAM. At the very least, a lot more than simply upgrading the processor does to improve OS responsiveness... On the other hand, trying to use even XP Service Pack 2 on a 1-2GHz processor (before SSE3 and C2D, that is) is just tepidly slow, no matter how much RAM you've shoved into the thing. And while things get a fair bit snappier with XP going from half to a gig, it doesn't really improve *that* much with going from 1GB to 2 unless you start running a lot of background apps.
