WoW is not part of Steam, and they have a lot more users. I have a STEAM account since early 07. Benjiman_Guile
I heard that there are 11 million players of WOW so 16 million isn't near the number.I DON'T have a STEAM account so you can see that not all gamers have a STEAM account.
No. I have a Battlenet account and a Xfire account, but not a Steam account even if I have 2 original copies of HL2 -the buyed one and the one gived by one of my graphic cards-. The reason is simply: I don't like Steam. I prefer Battlenet and other types of digital download stores, because Bnet does not require to install any program in my PC. The only one tracking gaming program that I admit in my PC is Xfire.
It also means that I never play Valve games since HL2. I Had a very bad experience with first steps of Steam and I have no plans to jump into Steam in the next 50 years, or so.

Then there are those STEAM users who hack at CS and get their accounts banned, and make new ones.
What's Steam? You mean water in the gaseous form?
Kidding.
I've had a Steam account since January, 2005. (I thought it was since 2004 but Steam tells me 2005...) I hated it when it first came out, when it was unreliable and had little to offer other than hassles. But now, I love it, and use it whenever I can. It's just so much easier buying, installing, managing, and running games that way.
None of my friends have steam accounts and I only got one recently to get CSS. Steam doesn't sell many games and aren't really neccessary. I just use it for the friends list and for the odd game.joshuahaveronSteam doesn't sell many games? Lately most new releases have been pushed to it and it has a great collection of older games.
Guilty as charged. I was thinking about getting Steam like, a month ago, but then, a few days later, my computer got a virus and I had to reinstall Windows and I lost all my files. Then I realized that if I bought and downloaded my games with Steam, if I lost all my files, that would be a lot of money gone. So, i decided to not take the chance and just drive a mile to the nearest GameStop. I'm fine with it.skateboard34
You can redownload your games from Steam, you know.
As long as you aren't on dial-up, I suppose it wouldn't be too painful.

i did when i bought counterstrike anthology.
but i took it off the computer and i'm not sure if the account is still there.
16 million accounts is actually a lot. kinda.
I have a Steam account. But I have only 2 games in it. Audiosurf (I couldn't find it in retail) and DoW - Soulstorm (bought when DoWII sale was on). Unless I was interested in Audiosurf, I would never made this account.
Steam is not 'the best thing for PC gamer', not at all. But it's providing good digital distribution services. I found many disadvantages in Steam too. 1) I can sell my Steam games to anyone else. 2) Steam is a DRM - though not like Securom but still it has to run if I want to play games. 3) Pricing factor of games sucks. They don't have country or region specific pricing.
I found GoG.com is far better service than Steam. I wish they become bigger than Steam one day (I know they will). Red Alert 3 is $29 in Direct2Drive but it still $49 in Steam. Do they think pc gamers are mad? :x
Get over with it guys. Steam is just another service but it is not a legendary thing.
I love Steam. If you don't have a Steam account you are not a pc gamer.artiedeadat40I strongly disagree with it. This may be your personal opinion that is not fact. According to your post, "if you don't do this you're not that", this philosophy never works in real life.

So, you don't play any Valve games? Look at the way that they update TF2. They are pretty much the only devloper that takes care of pc gamers now days.

I seriously don't play online multiplayer games. Only valve game I've ever played is HalfLife 1 and 2. I don't play FPS games - I'm into RPG and RTS which valve doesn't develop. But can you explain why I'm not a pc gamer if I don't play valve games?Nope there are a few things i dont like about it...
1. I want the box when i buy games...
2. If you get banned from steam it go "bye bye all games"
1. You can buy your box with valve games... 2. Don't get banned? Do you want to get banned from some games? Do you want to cheat in some games? Whats the deal here? I can't believe 14% of people in the PC gaming forum don't have a steam account. I expected maybe 5% at most. Why are you people living in the stone age? Or is it 14% of people that pirate and don't need one? I'm really quite perplexed.Nope there are a few things i dont like about it...

Well i dont cheat or anything however basicly the can remove your account for any reason they want and they dont even have to explain it for you. Nah i wont let other people decide that stuff for all games incase i would get banned for some reason from one game...
Anyway for me there is no point to get steam. Probably wont be for a very very very very long time.
WoW is not part of Steam, and they have a lot more users. I have a STEAM account since early 07. Benjiman_GuileWoW has about 11 million users active. Steam has 20-25 mil users, no idea how many active.

I too strongly disagree with the first and strongly agree with the second message.I don't have a STEAM account,so what!?I don't use STEAM because I don't want to,or need to use a STEAM account because I prefer to go to a shop and BYU a game.
[QUOTE="arijit_2404"]One more point which I have missed in my previous post. Steam may have 20mil users, but I doubt all of them created that account wishfully. As I can see many of those users were forced by valve to create a steam account. So no matter how loud you guys can scream, fact is Steam is a business at the end of the day. Unless you want to play valve games online, you can't justify usage of Steam services because there are other digital distribution services available as well as retail is available. I agree that Steam has better deals some times, but that too not worthwhile always. Don't forget - you can't resale your games(many gamers do that).CdscottieResale of PC games is almost non-existant anyways. So the point is pretty mute. To be honest, I mainly play singleplayer games and I love steam. As a DRM, it is by far one of the most fair ones and it is a great tool for people who dislike having to save CD/Keys all of the time or even wanting to play older games that they missed the first time around. You may dislike it for your own personal reasons but that is the beauty of freedom of choice. You can always choose to not use a service while others will. You're right. I agree with you. I am not against Steam. But I feel it isn't a must-have program or service. I know plenty of gamers who don't use Steam.
To all Steam users, Do I need to have a Steam ID even if, 1) I do not play FPS or any online multiplayer games. 2) I don't buy games digitally because in my country it costs half of the Steam price. There are plenty of gamers who fall in the above categories. If you still think we are living in stone age, then let it be. be happy what you've got. Live and Let Live. Only Steam users are genuine PC gamers others are not - this is madness. Also Steam doesn't solve a single thing in piracy. If they solved it then Half Life 2 weren't pirated. Tell me which Valve game is not pirated? Forget multiplayer - I know that is not possible. But let's say all valve games have singleplayer mode - show me a single game which isn't pirated. Steam is basically an excellent business idea where Valve shines above the rest. It's really a good business. Nothing more than that. And I bet all of you, no matter how hard steam tries, they can't win the battle with pirates. Disclaimer: I have a steam account but don't like it. I use it only because I have to play Audiosurf. I don't use pirated software and games.arijit_2404
This is the main reason I use Steam. I can download my games when ever I want. Who even uses D2D? What happens if they ever go out of buisness? Steam isn't going anywhere. It's also very convienient. I can also backup any of my steam games.

so you think D2D can go out of business but Steam can't. If steam owns by Valve, FYI, D2D own by IGN which in turn owned by IGN Entertainment, which is unit of Fox Interactive Media (Do I need to say anything). Please research about the topic before making comments. :P :P
You also said, non-Steam gamers are not gamers at all. Most funny comment read in GS in last two years. I can easily say those who doesn't own WII isn't a console gamer. If you think I'm right then I can agree with you. unless not.
Let's come to the point once again. Steam is nothing but a business which is successful in America and perhaps in UK too. But anywhere else in the world, it sucks big time. In my country all Steam games costs 2 or 3 times more than retail games. Why should I go for steam? explain with logic. Don't simply say - I love steam so everybody should love steam. I don't want to hear propaganda about Steam. :x
Unless you're playing multiplayer games, Steam servers mean nothing to me (and I believe lots of pc gamers happy with single player activities). I don't really understand why can't you see the whole point! Steam is a good thing for PC gaming industry but it isn't a must-have service - at least not yet. Who knows it may become that one day in future. Till then be happy with your propaganda. :D
