Just curious of peoples throughts with the Castlevania Series, I decided to plug in my SNES just for the fun and had a play of Super Castlevania for a few minutes just for the hell of it. I have a fairly large collection of Castlevania games that I have aquired through the years but I realised that I have never really got into it and played them through. Has anyone else had the same problem of not having the drive to finish the games? and what are your thoughts on the series in general?

I only own one Castlevania game, and thats SOTN on the Saturn.

good game, but sadly its a pretty poor port (saved only by the extras it has)

I was thinking of getting Dracula X sometime, but keep on delaying it.

One of my favorite series of all times. Super Castlevania 4 remains the pinnacle for me, even though i liked SotN, i like 4 far more.

Castlevania 1 & 3 are also excellent, even though they are outdated and have ben surpassed (by 4), the music and challenging bosses are a thrill to play trough.

And now.. i want to get my NES back, it's ben a very long time since i had one, good think i know my self a lot - i didn't sell any of my games for that system.

I LOVE the Castlevania series and it's definitely one of my favorites. I have played Castlevania I-III and finished them all. Personally, I didn't find it difficult to finish any of them as these wonderful experiences drive me on to complete what I started. I've played Super Castlevania IV and finished that as well. I think it is very good (as most of the NES series are when they made the jump to the SNES) someexamples: Metroid/Super Metroid, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!/Super Punch-Out, The Legend of Zelda/The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Contra/Contra III: The Alien Wars.

The pinnacle in the series for me however is Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PS1) it is, by far, the best in the series because it has so much in terms of gameplay, graphics, music, atmosphere, boss fights, and exploration-it's perfect in my opinion. It's a game I've finished numerous times and yet I can't stop playing it. I even bought the soundtrack because, in my opinion, it's one of the very best (Michiru Yamane is absolutely brilliant)

I think the Castlevania games (Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness)on the PS2 are good, but not as good as the series is on the NES, SNES, and PS1. The soundtracks on those are pretty good though.

The 2nd best action-platformer franchise, in my opinion

Almost all the 2D castlevanias are great

I always thought it was the best of the series :P

Castlevania Dracula X was the last good Castlevania game. The series generally went downhill after that. There are a few good modern Castlevania games, but they can't stand up to the classics.

Castlevania III >> Castlevania Dracula X >>>> Castlevania IV >>>>>> Castlevania I >>>>>>>>>>>>> Castlevania II

One of the things I like the most about the Castlevania series is the music. The series AS A WHOLE has the best video game music of all time. I really like listening to the remastered versions of some of the NES and SNES songs on Castlevania Judgment.

I personally enjoy the Mtroidvania games more than the sidescrollers but the sidescrollers are also fun in their own way. And Aria of Sorrow is one of my favorite ever handheld games.

I love the NES trilogy and the games on the SNES, but after those releases, I really didn't like anymore to come, including SotN.

Castlevania is a great series of games. Fantatic art-s-t-y-le to it, great platforming elements, and and great soundtracks. The biggest issue with them, though (especially the earlier entries in the series), is the difficulty. These games are hard, and at certain points just plain cheap. But it's worth it to practice and gain skill because they are great games. I especially loved Symphony of the Night, Circle of the Moon, and Simon's Quest (the only lonely fan of this entry).

I never cared much for Castlevania before SotN changed the formula- I always thought the classic CVs were all way too difficult. To date, however, I've beaten every handheld Castlevania since Circle of the Moon- including CVX:Chronicles on PSP.

Interesting. Castlevania X was generally viewed as a poor man's Rondo of Blood. I'm interested to know how you figure the series went downhill when it evolved and became more story oriented.

Funny? I find Dracula X to be one of the worst titles in the series. It was a terrible conversion or port or whatever of the far superior Rhondo of Blood. I find the series is fine as is, and I even enjoy Lord of Shadow(OH NO Blasphemy!!! OH NO!!).

Pretty much what I was going to say. The games always seem to be at their best when they stick to 2D side scrolling stuff. There is a couple of good 3D Castlevania games though, like Lament of Innocence for example.

Castlevania is definitely my favourite series, no contest at all there.
From the 8-bit gems on the NES to the godly gem that is Order of Ecclesia I've been a long time fan.
I was pretty saddened by Lords of Shadow to be honest, but that's mostly down to me being a bit of a continuity Nazi, the game itself was pretty good, but I loved the series for two things, it's story and it's soundtracks.
Here's to hoping the next installment goes back to the original canon once more and returns to the traditional conventions in terms of soundtrack.
I'm not saying that Lords of Shadow had a bad soundtrack, but it's certainly not what a Castlevania soundtrack should sound like.

I don't know what to think. I'm 3/4 done in Symphony of the Night and I don't think it's all that great. I tried playing the GBA games and I didn't like them either. But I did LOVE Castlevania : Lords of Shadow. IMO, that is how the Castlevania games should be. The TPS view really does make a whole lot of difference.

I don't know aboutallCastlevania games being like Lords of Shadow, but that's just my opinion. I think Lords of Shadow did a lot of things right as far as atmosphere, graphics, and music, but I honestly thought I was playing a God of War game. As I was playingLords of Shadow and all I could think about was the Castlevania games on the NES, SNES, and PS1 and how much I miss those:( Symphony of the Night got everything right and that's why it's my favorite of the entire series.

I love the series, particularly the Metroidvanias. Favourite game is easily Circle of the Moon, because of the variety of the DSS system and the challenge of the game. Aria of Sorrow and the original NES game follow CotM, and SotN and Simon's Quest are my least favourite of those I've played.

I don't think it's trash, it's good for a Castlevania game. However, there were tons of ridiculous parts that were too secretive and cryptic to even be considered fun. Like I said, it's alright but it's nowhere near as good as Rondo of Blood, Super Castlevania IV, Chronicles, etc.

I love Castlevania II. I love the fact that it's more RPG-ish than the other NES entries of the series. It's my favorite entry of the NES games. However things can be confusing about it, it's true. At least one part is. The part where you kneel next to a cliff for like 10 seconds and then a tornado whisps you away was a complete WTF moment. I was stuck at that point for years until a friend that knew told me.

I admit some of those parts were like "huh?!" for me too lol:P overall though I think it's great. I don't think I've played Rondo of Blood or Chronicles (definitely played Super Castlevania IV and that's an awesome game for sure).
