I am lucky enough to live near a cellphone repair place that also offers game system repair. My 1st gen PS3 (with backwards PS2 compatability) had the power source go out. It cost $60 to repair, but I have a large library of PS2 games that my son still plays, so I went ahead and had it fixed. The guy was also able to repair a Wii for $25 when one of my kids shoved a PSP game into the slot.

I have a 1st gen PSP that is falling apart and a DS that has problems with the bottom screen. What do you guys think the cutoff repair price is, where it just makes more sense to buy a new (updated) system?

Easy verdict...FIX IT

See the BC compatible PS3 is a much sought after thing..fix it while you can...worth it IMO irrespective of the price.

No, they are not, unless they're brand spanking new. Otherwise, they're just ticking time bombs.

You could get a used one for hella cheap on ebay.

The PSP (especially the first gen one) and DS aren't worth an awful lot at this point, so their repairs would have to be really cheap to be worthwhile. Otherwise you're better off picking up a used PSP 2000/3000 or DS Lite/DSi.

a PSP can be bought cheaply now, so you might as well go a new one. As for the DS, might as well upgrade to the 3DS. You'll be able to play your DS and 3DS games, though lose the ability to play GBA titles.

It depends on how likely I think the problem would occur again. I would say if I'm within $50 of a brand new system, with the new system being different than my current one (i.e. new slim ps3 vs old fat ps3), then I would buy new.

Repair the PS3 unless it continues to get damaged. In that case, keep the hard drive but sell the rest of the console. Get a new model PSP because they have improved parts. A new DS is cheap plus there is the 3DS which might have backwards compatibility. If the difference between the DS model you have and the most recent one sold in stores isn't that great, you might as well just keep repairing yours.
