This is why I never cared about reviews. The other day I was having a blast with Last Rebellion which got a 3.5. It was an amazing game, and these are the games I love. Currently playing Trinity: Zill of Souls O'll, and again a low score, never talked about and it's a real great action jrpg. Same goes to Nier - 5.0.

I do seem to enjoy more games with low reviews I've noticed. And these games seem to be different and not the same boing gameplay/high end graphics you see with 8+ scores.

Anyone else find lower end games far better in general than more known titles or do I have an odd taste to gaming?

I do find that lower tier/rated games are quite fun, but to say they are better than more mainstream games would be pushing it. I rarely rely on reviews for anything other than the faults the game has. If I read or hear the same issues from several different sources I have to decide if I want to invest either my time or money.

-

Take a game like Lair. Here it received a 4.5. Had I allowed the review to affect my decision to play the game, I would have missed out on a fun game.

-

On the other hand, MiB Alien Crisis was such a turd that I'm glad I was able to play it for free. Because I would have sorely regretted my purchase.

-

I don't mind giving any game a chance, regardless the score. After all, all reviews are subject to so many things. I just enjoy the hobby.

Yeah, I can say I've had a few that I've enjoyed the HELL out of even though they're weren't highly rated. Yakuza: Dead Souls, Sims Medieval and Asura's Wrath come to mind perfectly for this. Usually if it's a series I really love and I feel like I KNOW I will more than like enjoy or I just have a 'good vibe' about the game, then I don't really give a rat's ass as to what a review will say. I find normally when i just 'go w/ my gut' I find I tend to have a blast playing such games. The only time I might be hesitate and actually strongly consider what others say about lower scoring games if it's coming from both, critics and fellow gamers, about really bad mechanics, game-breaking bugginess or just over all crappy storylines.

An opion based on certain credibility and technical knowledge of games, to be fair.

If by "odd taste" you mean "I don't enjoy only the super popular games that the masses like" then yeah I guess I have odd taste too. I tend to play and enjoy a lot of niche games that either go unnoticed, are underrated, or are panned by critics.

Technical quality =/= fun. At least not always. One of the best games I played this gen was Viking: Battle for Asgard.

I apparently have extremely odd tastes in games because I don't like to play slight variations of the exact same thing over and over. There are only a tiny number of franchises I like enough to want to play a sequel - not every freaking one of them. A game may be good when taken by itself, but when I've already played almost exactly the same thing twice before, it is not good. It's boring and predictable.

I've liked quite a few games that got lousy reviews. Nier is one of the most memorable and enjoyable experiences of this gen - Gamespot gave it a big 5/10. Dark Void is another favorite - 6.5/10. I had a great time with Hunted: The Demon's Forge. 5/10 from GS.

That's one of the reasons I have zero interest in what reviewers think. The other is that I've got half a shelf full of crap they gave 8.5's - 10's to that I quit playing after an evening or two.

This. My opinion is what counts since the money and time invested in the game are mine.

I'm the same way.

I freaking loved Sonic 06. Most people call me stupid when I tell them that.

People are easily brain-washed by the mainstream media that labels some of my favorite games as terrible games. :( It's so stupid how they follow in lockstep.

Absolutely true. I guess I'm more saying that I wouldn't trust someone else's opinion over my own, or even that of someone I know closely.

Yeah theres quite a few games i liked that got slated in reviews, Nier (soundtrack is amazing), Alpha protocol and Hunted the demon forge off the top of my head, but i dont usually use review as my sole source of infomation of whether i buy a game or not.

I'll do you one better- I actually liked the controls and the gunplay. But then. I played as a super secret spy guy and my gun was never really a weapon- it was more of a tool.

Did we play the same Alpha Protocol? Ha.

I even found just movement to be really bad.

I never had any problem getting where I needed to go. And without being spotted. I swear, by the end of my playthrough, I would just scythe my way through any badguys patrolling around any area. That game made me feel utterly badass.

Everyone have guilty plasures. Something they like for some reason.

Alpha Protocol, I rememeber one time I stealth through Rome. Then I got a call by a man and he praise me for being so stealthy. That is beeter than the moral or dialog picks from other games.

As for a review score. That is just a person final though on the game and is not important. You need to look at their justification of why they think like that.

Sure there's some games that have reviewed poorly that I've really enjoyed and the very, very odd one that have garnered excellent reviews that I didn't enjoy as much but for the overwhelming majority my tastes tend to reflect those of the professional reviewers.

Typically, I play games that get more than a 7. Reviewers are helpful but I do not rely on them nor do they affect my buying decisions. I like reading reviews on amazon.com because they are usually the most accurate.
