when you get a new game or have one you havent played yet, do you have to be in the mood to start playing a new game?

or do you just start playing regardless the situation?

myself i usually have to be in the mood to start playing a new game unless its a sports or fighting game. if its a game with a story i gotta be wanting to play it and have have at least an 1 or 2 to get into it or i wont even start it. its kinda point less to start a new game and only have like 20 minutes to be able to play it

so what about you guys and gals?

Yup. I only bother starting a new game if I've got at least 3 hours to spend on it to get a grip on the game. Although when a new release comes out that I've been waiting for (like Red Dead Redemption) then I'll take a day off college or work and get into it.

I can't stand buying a game only to get home and find you've got to go out to get food or something. I want to play NAAOOWW!

As far as moods go, I usually take a skim of my game collection (or a retailer's shelf/website) and think about whether I'm in the mood to play X, Y or Z genre....

If it's single player, I want to have time to play it and not be tired, so I can take in what's happening.

That's what it's like with a lot of games if I want to just play the campaign mode, even if I've already started it.

It depends on the game. As you said, if I only have 20 mins I would probably insert a 2D platformer on my DS. On the flipside if I have 5 hours of playtime I would play 1 act of MGS4. Damn that game was amazing, it was ~2 hour movie + ~3 hours of gameplay / gaming session. Playing only half a chapter (act) wouldn't give the same results imo.

Generally I don't have to be in a special mood when it comes to games, but I understand what you're saying. When it comes to movies I have to wait until the perfect time to watch it. I just pick the next game on my huge list of unplayed games.. -_-

When I start a new game I dont need 3+ hours etc to "get into it" as some people have said they do. .....But yeh, sometimes I just arent in the mood to game and end up watchng tv or something - those moments seem to happen more and more just lately :(

I flip between games so easily, that it's pathetic. Sometimes I have to force myself to play, because I don't seem to be in the mood to play. And sometimes, I just want to play a different game than one I've been playing.

Absolutely. Sadly, with work, the mood doesn't always last long enough for me to finish the game.

im always eager to start a new game...i bring it home and get it going asap. finishing it...thats another story. im easily distracted by new and shiny things :P. some games though...i love em to bits but sometimes i have to push myself to just boot up the game. empire total war for example. love it...was my GOTY last year. once im playing it i can be gone for hours. just one more turn..just one more battle..oh i cant stop now an army just entered my territory and i have to deal with it :P. but sometimes i have to push myself to double click on the icon in steam. maybe its the long loading time to start it up or something. weird.

Definetly. If I have to start a new game, I have to set out a time where I want to play for a rather large amount of time, so I can get a good first impression of the game.

Very, very much so, unless I've been waiting on it for years ie: GOW III, Bioshock 2. Starting a new game is the only thing I don't like about gaming, for some strange reason, usually just the first hour, and I'll wait sometimes weeks or months.

Actually, yes. I haven't been able to play anything seriously for a couple of weeks now. Just not in the mood for anything else but a couple football matches here and there.

Yeah, I cant just randomly start a game, I need to build myself up to it, like set aside a day to get started so the excitement builds up :)

No since I usually have the best ones like ND3(Narikiri Dungeon 3) or RM2(Radiant Mythology 2)

it depends.. if i was in a bad mood i definitely wont start a game with a story i need to focus on, instead i play a game just to take my mind away from things, like online FPSs or racing games or something like LBP. other than that, my mood need to be good and set for 4 or 5 days to play a game and finish it. my latest bad experience with such issue was when i started MGS3 about a month ago and i still didn't finish it, and i just cant see myself playing it from the beginning all over again... but somehow i have to.

If it's a soccer (and most sports games) or a RPG i don't have a problem to play whenever i can, but if i'm starting some i have to at least use 3-4 hours onto it if it has a story or difficult/weird gameplay.

I don't flip between games, but I totally agree with you with forcing myself to play. However, as soon as I start playing, I get into it really easy and get that "addiction" back.

Yeah, I have to be in the mood to start a new game or it just doesn't work for me. Recently, after finishing Yakuza 3, I had no urge to start Heavy Rain (which has been sitting on my desk for about a week). I figured once I was done, I'd easily want to jump over to that game, but I really just wanted to play more of Yakuza 3 and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Eventually I forced myself and wow, those first two hours are completely boring. Fortunately I forced myself to play again tonight and now I'm now much more engrossed in the story. But geez, could they have made those sections with Ethan any more boring? And I simply could not imagine how they could make me hate a character more than they did with him...and they weren't even trying!

For some genres, I have to be in the mood to play it before I'll bother. That would be like racing, fighter, or jrpg. Any other genre I'll start up with no issues. Naturally if I don't feel like playing anything or need a break, I just don't play.

Yes, I have to be in the mood to start a new game. I like to plan starting a new game for a time when I know I will be able to play it for at least several hours in a row like a weekend or a holiday.
