2014's Godzilla got the ball rolling with the first truly great American movie featuring the kaiju behemoth--sorry, Godzilla 1998--and the story continued in Godzilla: King of the Monsters when the Big G established himself as the planet's apex predator. Meanwhile, Kong: Skull Island brought the ape wonder of the world back to the big screen after a lengthy absence, making the return of Kong a slick Vietnam War-era experience with outstanding cinematography.

Eventually, the two titans would clash in Godzilla vs. Kong, a movie that did not disappoint with its premise and had a few surprises up its sleeve as well. Finally, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire released in theaters in March and was a huge success, pulling in over $570 million worldwide. The New Empire is the fifth-highest-grossing movie of the year.

While Kong and Godzilla are still best of frenemies in 2024's The New Empire, new threats to the planet force them to work together as they set aside their grudge for the greater good. Also, Godzilla suplexes Kong into one of the Giza pyramids, and that alone makes it worth watching.

Nier: Automata continues to resonate with its fans several years after it first hit consoles and PC. Since then, the tale of the humanoid androids 2B, 9S, and A2, has been adapted to multiple other versions, including the acclaimed anime, Nier: Automata Ver1.1a. While the anime concluded back in 2024, fans can soon add the second half of the animated adaptation to their Blu-ray collection with NieR: Automata Ver1.1a Volume 2, which includes the final 12 episodes of the series plus a selection of collectible prints, an artbook, and more. The second volume comes with some nice extras, like illustration cards, booklets that contain exclusive interviews with the crew behind the show, reference material on the game's world, and a replica disc designed to match the one included in the first volume. You'll also find clean opening and closing credit sequences, a collection of trailers, and both of the English and Japanese audio tracks. The main cover of the three-disc slipcase also features a new illustration of 9S on the cover.

In case you missed it, the anime adaptation of Nier:Automata largely sticks to the same story as the games/ Set in the year 11,945, the show charts follows android soldiers 2B and 9S on their journey across Earth, millennia after the planet was devastated in an alien invasion. Encountering mysterious phenomena along the way, 2B and 9S uncover new truths and are pushed to their mechanical limits as they fight strange threats along the way.

The game was critically acclaimed after launch, as multiple playthroughs revealed more of its charm and heartbreaking narrative. While recapturing all of that video gamey magic that made the game so special is admittedly an impossible task for an anime series to achieve, the Nier: Automata adaptation does a fine job interpreting the source material and putting its own spin on it.

As part of the Star Wars-themed Fortnite: Galactic Battle season, Epic and Disney will launch the Star Wars Watch Party island on May 2 at 10am ET/7am PT. Fans who attend the in-game event will be able to watch the first two episodes of Tales of the Underworld. They will also have the chance to battle waves of stormtroopers using blasters and lightsabers. The island will be visible in the row of experiences after players login to Fortnite, or by entering the code 2124-6713-8076. Players who watch both episodes will get a free Asajj Ventress loading screen in Fortnite.

That's only part of the greater integration between Star Wars and Fortnite in May. Players will also be able to link their Epic Accounts with their MyDisney Accounts. As a reward for that, players will get a new First Order stormtrooper skin as seen in the Star Wars sequel trilogy.

Fortnite Festival is also dropping "Lapti Nek," the original song from Jabba's Palace in Return of the Jedi. That song was purged from the movie in favor of "Jedi Rocks" in George Lucas' special edition of Return of the Jedi. Fortnite data miners have also broken the news that three new Star Wars-inspired tracks will debut during the event: "Rebel's Run," "The Dark Side," and "Where My Wookiees At?".

The new season of Fortnite will go live on May 2.

If there was a Mount Rushmore of action stars, then you can bet that Jet Li's face would be on it. He could probably chiseled into the rock with his bare hands. A legend of Hong Kong's golden age of filmmaking and the star of several cult-classic Hollywood movies, several of Li's best adventures are being collected into a new 4K Blu-ray package. Simply titled The Jet Li Collection, this five-film collection is up for preorder for $130 at Amazon and Walmart ahead of its July 29 release.

These movies are essentially a highlight reel of Li's career during the '90s, with three of them being filmed in 1993 alone. Earlier films like Once Upon a Time in China and Swordsman 2 helped turn him into a rising star thanks to his talent and well-choreographed fight scenes, and the Fong Sai Yuk movies--known as The Legend and The Legend 2 in the US--alongside Tai Chi Master showcased more of his graceful ability to smash faces. Fast-forward to 1994, and Li's work on The Bodyguard from Beijing and Fist of Legend were two more instant classics that garnered international praise.

Fist of Legend is arguably one of his most influential movies, as this was a remake of the 1972 action extravaganza Fist of Fury. Since Fist of Fury starred Bruce Lee, Li had some big shoes to fill, but Fist of Legend more than delivered thanks to iconic fight sequences choreographed by Yuen Woo-Ping.

It's worth noting that if you're a fan of Hong Kong cinema, there's a lot more to look forward to. Shout Factory recently announced that it had secured the worldwide rights to the Golden Princess film library, a collection 156 movies that have largely been absent from the 4K Blu-ray market. This means that you can expect dozens of hard-hitting action movies to get a new 4K release soon, including iconic films like Hard Boiled, The Killer, the Better Tomorrow trilogy, and City on Fire, amongst many more.

If you weren't a regular moviegoer in 1994, then it must have been a confusing year, thanks to everyone around you peppering their speech with "Alriiiiiiighty then" catchphrases. Jim Carrey's breakout year at the box office started with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and at long last, that comedy classic is releasing on 4K Blu-ray on July 29. A Limited Edition Steelbook version sold out fast at Amazon for $45, but you can currently preorder it at Walmart for $33 while supplies last.

Ace Ventura was one of the biggest comedy films of the year, thanks mostly to Jim Carrey's wild performance as the titular pet detective. While the movie does have some content that is very dated when viewed through a modern lens, it's still a laugh riot thanks to the constant flow of one-liners and a solid mystery at its core. A sequel would arrive a few years later and it saw Ventura travel to Africa--much to the relief of several dozen Buddhist monks--but this one hasn't received a 4K Blu-ray release yet. You can find it on Blu-ray, or as part of an Ace Ventura Blu-ray double feature.

To complete the set, you can also pick up Ace Ventura: Pet Detective Jr. on DVD. We're not saying you should avoid it, but this prequel can induce a level of cringe so bad that it generates its own gravity. It's a soulless cash-grab at best, and if you watch it, you might need to buy a new Blu-ray player because you'll likely fling yours through the nearest window after watching just a few minutes of this movie.

In related Jim Carrey news, you can pick up Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on 4K Blu-ray right now. The threequel saw Carrey star once again as Dr. Ivo Robotnik and his character's grandfather, Gerald Robotnik.

There are two different steelbook case designs to choose from: Sonic and an Amazon-exclusive Shadow variant. You can complete the Carrey trilogy with Sonic the Hedgehog Bonus Stage Steelbook Edition for $28.30 (was $30.46) and the Sonic 2 Steelbook Edition for $18.45 (was $29).

When it comes to iconic pairings from British cinema, Wallace & Gromit are easily at the top of that movie list, as they go together better than cheese and crackers. If you've been looking to dive into the early days of their exploits, you can preorder Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Cracking Collection on 4K Blu-ray for $30 at Walmart or Amazon ahead of its July 15 release.

At the time of writing on April 29, preorders are sold out at Amazon, but you can still snag a copy at Walmart. We'd expect Amazon to restock preorders before the July release. Both retailers offer preorder price guarantees, and you won't be charged for your order until it ships.

The Cracking Collection is also available on a standard Blu-ray on its own, but it's worth noting that this version from Shout Factory doesn't include any of the special features mentioned above. You're still getting all of the shorts from the 4K edition and it is cheaper--currently $16.58 (was $25) on Amazon--but the new 4K edition is better value-for-money. Still, if you just want the original Wallace and Gromit adventures in 1080p and without extras, this option is available.

If you're a fan of Wallace & Gromit, then you're probably also fond of several other stop-motion animation projects developed by the duo's studio, Aardman Animation. Chicken Run is currently available on Blu-ray for just $8.72, while Flushed Away is $17 and features an ensemble cast of actors voicing some strangely charming characters. Since Hugh Jackman and Ian McKellen are in it, it's basically an unofficial X-Men sequel.

Another highlight from Aardman is Shaun the Sheep, the mischievous lamb who has gone on to star in several movies and TV series over the years. Several of these Blu-rays are also on special, and they've even picked up a few prestigious Annie awards over the years.

The Tolkien Illustrated Series is special because all of the full-color illustrations and sketches throughout each book were drawn by the author himself while he penned the manuscripts that would become The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. The illustrations in The Silmarillion were drawn by Tolkien while drafting his exhaustive backstory and lore for the world of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion was published posthumously and is now the first of a 12-part series, The History of Middle-earth, compiled by his son Christopher Tolkien.

The History of Middle-earth Box Sets

As mentioned, The Silmarillion is part of the larger History of Middle-earth series, which was collected and edited by Christopher Tolkien after his father's death. This past Sunday's episode of The Last of Us was the first to air since Joel (Pedro Pascal) was killed off in Episode 2. For the Episode 3 intro, HBO made a heartbreaking update that some might have missed.

The intro sequence used to show both Joel and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) standing side by side, but after Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) brutally murdered Joel, he's been erased from the slide. Ellie now stands alone.

It's a somber change that might have gone unnoticed by many viewers, considering lots of people tend to hit the "skip" button when the opening credits come up.

Joel was killed off in The Last of Us: Part II, so viewers of the show who played the game or knew the story understood that his death was coming. But many were surprised that it happened so soon in Season 2.

Despite Joel's death, he'll appear in Season 2 a lot more, showing more of his relationship with Ellie. "We do get to see them quite a bit together this season. And we also get to see interesting things happening with them--more, I think, than what we saw in Season 1," showrunner and writer Craig Mazin said.

"I think watching this, you have to lean into your feelings that you're feeling in each moment," said Merced via Variety. "I don't think the writers and the designers of the game wanted you to be wiser [than the characters]. I don't think they wanted you to be like, 'Oh, everyone's bad because they're all after their own thing.' I think they really want everyone to lean into their frustration and their pain."

That pain comes from the loss of Joel (Pedro Pascal), the fan-favorite character who was murdered by Abby (Kaitlyn Dever) in retaliation for the murder of her father at Joel's hands. This in turn has led Ellie (Bella Ramsey) to swear vengeance against Abby and her friends for killing her surrogate father figure. Merced's Dina--who seems to be very much in love with Ellie--is now in a delicate position of accompanying Ellie on a mission of revenge that might get one or both of them killed.

"[The writers are] cooking," added Merced. "The meal's not done yet... I don't think you have to be bigger than the message."

Ramsey recently shared the experience of filming an emotionally difficult scene from episode 3 regarding Joel's death. Joel may be dead in the present, but Pascal still has a part to play in Season 2. The next episode of The Last of Us will also introduce Jeffrey Wright's character, Isaac, who he also played in The Last of Us Part II.

The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 4 will premiere on Sunday, May 4 at 6 PM PT / 9 PM ET on HBO and Max.

"You know the moments. You know the lines. You love the songs! Now it's time to get loose, laugh out loud, and belt out those lyrics like a true diamond-tier fan," Warner Bros. said in a news release.

The Block Party Edition of A Minecraft Movie screens on Friday, May 2 in North America and select international markets. Warner Bros. said to check with your local theater to confirm participation. It appears to be a one-day event, and maybe that's for the best.

Some of the screenings for A Minecraft Movie got so intense that the cops were called, prompting some theaters to air disclaimers informing viewers to stay calm. Director Jared Hess responded to the fan frenzy around A Minecraft Movie. Speaking to EW, Hess said, "It's weird when you're having too much fun and the cops get called."

The director went on to say "it's just literally cheering and throwing popcorn," so he found it funny that the police were called. "Yeah, it's hilarious. I've seen so many funny videos. It's great, especially when people are climbing on their friends' shoulders and standing up and cheering for those moments," he said.

A Minecraft Movie premiered in early April and has become a global phenomenon, bringing in more than $800 million so far. The movie is still going strong, having just brought in a further $22 million in the US alone for its fourth weekend in theaters.

A Minecraft Movie is the No. 2 highest-grossing video game film of all time. It sped past Sonic the Hedgehog 3's global haul of $462.5 million, though seems unlikely to overtake The Super Mario Bros. Movie's worldwide total of $1.36 billion.
