Endless Fun

Released in 1984 ExciteBike was the first motorbike game I can remember and to this date, it's still the best. Yes I know there are other Motorbike games out there but how many are as simple as this jewel is? There wasn't any tuning your bikes in this game like there are in many racing games of today. All you did was push the accelerate button and the bike would move. Push back on DPad and your rider does a willie which is fun to do. Excite Bike includes 3 modes: Selection A (Single person racing) Selection B (Racing against 3 CPU opponents) and a Designer which is basically where you can make up your own racing track. Now, I'll go through the different modes. there is something I have to say about the modes, they don't make sense in my opinion. in Selection A your racing by yourself your job is to get the best score, which is pretty easy unless you really mess up, what I don't get is at the end of the rounds if you do good you'll place 1st and it'll show you against 2 other racers, but if they are there, where were they in the race? or did they race before I guess that would make a little sense. Now onto Selection B this is where it totally throws me for a loop when you start you see the standard 3 CPU opponents when you start the race if you break free, you'll think "Ha got'em" right? Wrong! the game will place more in front of you so it seems instead of racing against just 3 opponents it seems your racing against hundreds because there isn't any real end to the opponents you see, even though you see more people it never really upsets you because you know you'll always win if you do your best. Now onto the part I loved most, Designer mode in this mode you can make your own tracks which was totally awesome at the time, and to date it still is, I remember being like Evil Knievel (SP) and racing down a long flat track nearly overheating and hitting that one jump and just landing it, that felt so awesome. So those are the 3 modes, one thing I like is the fact that the track changes colors I think it's spose to represent the different times of the day, I like the blue and purple color scheme that they use. I think it's for night time. which is cool. The only thing you have to watch for besides the little obstacles in the game is the heat meter if it gets too high, than you over heat you'll pull over and have to cool down, the controls are responsive there isn't a story to this game your just racing and in the end isn't it nice to play a game that doesn't have a story sometimes? The graphics and sounds are great so if your into a game without a story and just about having fun than you'll like this game. if you can't find it than one way to play it is if you can get animal crossing for the game cube you can get it as a extra. A 10 out of 10 from me.
