I'm incredibly amazed by the lack of coverage this game has received regarding the absurd amount of technical difficulties involved with the release of the game - ranging from issues with installation (on all platforms), failing to connect to Origin servers (required to import custom world settings), extreme random fps drops, all the way to crash-to-desktop. The EA/Bioware technical support forum was absolutely crowded by frustrated and desperate consumers begging developers to patch the game. While some of the issues have been patched out, most of these issues still persist half-way into January of 2015.
My review will be based off of personal experience, as there are way too many other technical oddities revolving the release of this game.
On release the game was plagued by horrendous stutters - some faulty coding somewhere in the game was causing almost all users CPUs to run at a constant 100% regardless of system specs (low-end low-setting graphics all the way to high-end machines running ultra) - it didn't matter. In this, credit shall be given where credit is due, as the developers sent out a patch after listening to the complaints of the players, effectively resolving the issue for almost all PC users. Sadly, the fix only allowed me to dive into the numerous other problems with the game.
Since it's release back in November, I've successfully connected to roughly 10% of the multiplayer sessions I try to join. The game has a session drop issue oddly reminiscent of the lobby drops from the Mass Effect 3 multiplayer. Effectively, attempts at joining various lobbies are met with a "session could not be found", and attempts at hosting own games and immediately running them results in clearing half the map to find my session has been dropped (eventhough I am the host) - losing all credited kills, achievement progress and xp in the process.
The singleplayer suffered from other issues on release, but the two patches have since resolved most of the issues with this part of the game for me personally. Currently I am down to a singular issue, sadly proving quite taxing on my patience with the game, as it continually - seemingly - randomly crashes to desktop with no errors or notifications. This crash can happen anywhere between 3 minutes and 3 hours into a game session (rarely have I gotten to play 3 hours straight of this game without crashing to desktop). You know there's a problem when your manual save file is 5 minutes into the game, but you've progressed well over 20 hours into the game through loading from autosaves, as the game crashes before your planned time for quitting everytime. On top of this the singleplayer suffers from various balancing issues, effectively rendering some classes extremely overpowered (soloing content is a breeze as a Knight Enchanter - who needs companions anyway, right!?) to the point that it takes away all fun from a combat perspective.
Putting all technical and balance issues aside (although they have effectively forced me to shelf the game until it receives further patching), the game is absolutely amazing (which only makes it so much more painful having to deal with all these problems). If it didn't have these technical issues, I would recommend the game to anybody who likes RPG games or grindy hack-and-slash multiplayer ( actually purchased the game mostly for it's multiplayer component), however I cannot in good conscience recommend this game (and have told all my friends to stay away from it until it gets patched), because there is literally no guarantee that you can actually play or even install the game upon purchase.
