Addictive RPG that keeps me playing despite its bugginess
This a game where there are moments where you are not quite sure what you're supposed to be doing. Sometimes it feels like your just wondering about and lucking your way into something cool or at least the next part of the plot. WOW. I haven't felt that uneasy, unknowing vibe(am I going the right way) in a game since, well maybe neverwinter. I like it. Totally opened ended character building, I like it. A touch of platforming, I like it. Excellent humor. I like it. Wierdo Easter eggs just for the hell of it. I like it. A Developer community who is actively participating in forums and trying to resolve all the crappy bugs, I like it.
The story so far seems to be pretty cool. Its slightly generic(with some humor that often laughs at itself), In reality the way this game is playing out. It seems to be a bit of letting the player make his way thru, while being somewhat in the dark about what he's trying to accomplish. Its not a railroad linear plot, which allows the game to tell a grand story. No this is play the game and hope you figure it out. The main plot itself does feel like it may a bit on the linear side, but the game doesn't railroad you thru. It really feels like you have to discover the path, as opposed to say dragonage where it feels like you're a star in some grand hollywood fantasy movie on a predestined course. So I give em some slack for not having this elaborate plot.
Game play is classic ARPG. Me personally I prefer it with a gamepad and xpadder. People have complained its too difficult. I haven't found that to be true at all. In fact, I think it may be slightly imbalanced for ranged character, mages, rangers. Bow damage is way too high. As I'm playing a mage with most of my attributes in intelligence not much in dex, But I'm just wasting stuff with a bow. Thats not right. And you shouldn't be able to take down skeletons with a bow. Sorry thats ridiculous.
The battles are challenging and quick they require alot of movement and targeting. Which makes for alot of fun excitement in terms of game play that requires a bit physical action type skill to get thru.
Between that, the open ended wondering, and bit of platforming the game is fun and addictive to play.
Unfortunately, for the level of graphics the performance is horrible, and the game is very sensitive to computer settings. I currently play alot of newer games with much higher end graphics and can pretty much play them at highest setting without having to mess around with tweaking my system. This game required me to really mess around quite abit in order to get it playable, that said there latest patch plus some xml edits totally straightening things out. So it gets some negative for that. If not for the bugs and poor performance I would rate this right up there with dragonage.
