I thought this would be one of those lame cave-navigating platformers. I have never been so wrong in my life.

When I heard about Cave Story, I was skeptical. I thought it would be one of those lame side-scrolling adventure games with little incentive to play. But, I downloaded it anyway and played through it. At first I was bored. Then, I was a little interested. Then, I was interested. Then, I was smiling. Then, I was sitting on the edge of my chair, shocked.

An oldschool style freeware, Cave Story sports a very interesting combination of platforming, shooting and role playing and is executed very well. The plot is weird but doesn't get in the way of the gameplay. The characters are colorful but a bit underdeveloped. Despite this, Cave Story is programmed excellently. I did not once find a glitch or impossible to cross spot. It has the perfect balance of challenge and simpleness. It is not an easy game, but it is not relentlessly difficult.

Anyone who has not played Cave Story MUST try it. It will run well on most computers and is definately worth the time to play. It is a good length, not too long, not too short. It has many hidden elements that you will like to uncover after beating the game the easy way.

Now, I'm an avid Cave Story fan and I have a Balrog papercraft sitting on my desk.
