Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Adds Online Co-Op With New Mod

What's better than one Link running around Hyrule? Two Links running around Hyrule.

You can now play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild online with your friends thanks to modders hired by content creator PointCrow.

This mod has been nearly two years in the making. Back in November of 2021, PointCrow posted on Twitter that they wanted someone to create this mod and offered a "$10,000 bounty" to whoever created one.

On April 4, 2023, the mod was officially released. The mod allows you to play through the entire game with your friends. But you can also play PVP to see who's the better player. To download the mod, you'll need to join PointCrows Discord server and click on -Mod-Downloads, leading you to a Google Doc explaining how to install it. As always, you should be mindful of what you download online.

It didn't take long for fans to run wild with the mod. One TikTok video shows 18 players running around in a single server.

PointCrow subsequently announced that their YouTube channel was struck by copyright infringement claims by Nintendo a few days after the mod was released. "Incredibly disappointed that [Nintendo] has decided to block my videos on Breath of the Wild," the tweet reads. "It's the love for the community and the innovation that we bring to it that has kept it alive & brought new people to love the Zelda series. I hope you reverse your decision soon."

lol, sure buddy. From the people who play BotW, pretty sure very few of them knows about the existence of this mod and its creators.

That said, looks like a pretty fun mod. I wouldn't use it though.

It's the love for the community and the innovation that we bring to it that has kept it alive & brought new people to love the Zelda series: this is incredibly false, and the entitlement this asshole is projecting is not a good look for a self proclaimed "fan" of the series.

As for modding it, I'm not sure why he felt the need to ruin the game but he's clearly not a fan of he had to change it. Modders bring nothing of value to the community, the game is either fun as it is, or you're bored and need to find a new game to play. Don't waste your time trying to convince yourself you're a fan of a game.

@reznik00: that's pretty negative, lot of people spend all their time tinkering with their favorite games to say he's not a fan because he plays it differently than you is pretty high and mighty of you... does it bother you that he may be a bigger fan than you?

that's cool and the reason nintendo strike it down, because it involve modding/softmodding the actual hardware or running on a emulator.

Something that would've been in the game from the start if nintendo hardware could handle more than one player on screen. So much so for that "hardware doesn't matter, its all about gameplay" bullshit that everyone with weak hardware always copes with.

@hardwenzen: Hardware doesn't matter, otherwise the Switch wouldn't be the far superior console to the Xbox Series X. It is all about gameplay, that's why the Switch is the superior console to the Xbox Series X. There's a reason why PlayStation systems sell single player narratives while Xbox can't get players, not sales, on their flagship entries. It's always about the gameplay for GAMERS. You're clearly not a gamer.

Your system is missing out on all third party titles, and here you're, telling yourself that hardware is not needed while the system couldn't even run Elden Ring's title screen. Also, who said the Switch is superior? Your local kindergarten?

@hardwenzen: uh... the "switch" could handle more than one player on screen, besides they were playing on a custom server, not split screen.

local split screen (1 system only) - the "switch" could handle 2 to 4 player, but frame rate would drop since it has to render two different screen for each player.

custom online server - you could have a lot of players on it, since it just one screen on one system focusing on you instead of having multiple spit screens.

local offline server (system to system) - same as "custom online server", just that your link to other system while running the game on your own system offline, all it has to do it stay in sync to match 1 on 1 with whoever your connected with.

besides, "the legend of zelda" series isn't much a multiplayer game in mind anyway - it was made with single player only.

The original game from 2017 ran at 17fps, and you think this hardware can handle more than one player on screen? There is a reason why botw was as empty as it was.

@hardwenzen: maybe not much on split screen, but online - it could handle it.

for online - it just need a better internet connection with a better netplay to sync other players in and those other players would act like any other npc on your screen - just that it'll move around alot.

the game runs around 30 to 20 fps depending on the location your at on the original hardware (wii u and "switch") besides it doesn't need a lot of npc and enemies and it's fine the way it is.

It wouldn't handle online either. There is a reason why games such as Xenoblade don't have any coop, even tho the game looks like it was made for coop in mind. Don't expect anything on the hardware you're stuck with. It can barely do 3D graphics at this point. Ambitious titles on a Switch are not a thing.

@hardwenzen: i think it would for online than split-screen, since it just need to sync that player on to your game. even though it looks like it but still fine in single player. wii u and the "switch" could still do it, but not in the same park as ps5 and xbox series x could. didn't expect much anyway.

Yep because the WIi U started its demise during development

@treechopper88: wii u did nothing to it and the game was made for wii u before "switch" begin prototyping.

Then you look at WiiU's hardware, compare it to the Switch, and you ask yourself where's the actual jump in specs.
