Your Steam Library Dies With You

Valve says you can't pass down your Steam library to next of kin or loved ones in the event of your death.

Modern gamers who have fully embraced digital gaming may believe that the titles they've purchased will belong to them in perpetuity. But if anyone is hoping to pass on their Steam backlog to their next of kin, it turns out that Valve doesn't allow the rights to be transferred. In other words, your Steam library dies with you.

Via Ars Technica, a user on ResetEra posted a reply that they received from Steam support regarding their question about passing on their Steam library through a will. "Unfortunately, Steam accounts and games are non-transferable," replied a representative from Valve. "Steam Support can't provide someone else with access to the account or merge its contents with another account. I regret to inform you that your Steam account cannot be transferred via a will."

Some users have put a considerable amount of money into their Steam libraries, and it may be disheartening to hear that those games could simply be gone following the death of the Steam account owner. However, the easiest workaround may be to simply pass on the username and login info to potential heirs without informing Steam. The thorny issue of who really owns the digital games would remain, but at least the titles would still be playable.

An additional way to preserve Steam games is to pass down any computers that already have the titles downloaded. However, without access to the original Steam account, those games wouldn't be available for installation on a different device or even accessible for reinstallation on the computer they're currently on in the event of a hard-drive crash or other system failure. For that reason alone, this may not be an optimal solution. But until Valve offers users a better way to pass on their games, there aren't many other options available.

I am going on a deployment with the military to a high risk location that is not at war (yet at least). I did as all in my situation write a formal will and an informal one. In the informal once my log in details (and gaming email address) are mentioned which goes to my best friend.

People can just give their log in info to who ever they want to have it and then that person keeps that games and the account.

But my children must finish what I started!!! This is my legacy, I buy games I never have time to play because they are on sale and I feel like I got a good deal. It will take more life times than I have to complete all the games. Immortality is the only way now!!!

No doubt this will enrage a lot of the easily triggered folks on here or the anti-PC brigade, but this is a minor thing. Obviously it'd be nice if this was something we could do, but at the same time when you die I would like to think there are bigger things to deal with, like things that have actual value.

With that said, I don't know if Valve can actually enforce this as something tells me they aren't checking obituaries so they can cancel your account the second you bite the dust. If you just put your account name and password into the will, I'm pretty sure you can more or less pass on your game collection.

People move and change addresses, get new credit cards, and even can legally change their name...there is no way (AFAIK) for Valve to actually enforce this.

In the end, if it's that important to the deceased, they will have accounted for this and given you the account name and password. My dad has done this with all his various accounts for more important things, for example, as he is 80+ years old and getting things prepared.

I have a Steam account and kept receiving emails constantly for several years. My gaming computer died and I had the username, password and password confirmed because I could log in and request the user name, etc. I got a new gaming computer.

But they would not reactivate my account, they even asked me for the codes from the games CDs that I still have and provided to them. I understand protecting the account but if you forget what credit card you used, forget it. They still have my address, I have not moved.

Shame on them, you own nothing!

Sounds like just before you plan to XX yourself, or going to die, hand your steam email account (whatever it's tied to over) to whoever you want. Then when they set a password reset, it will go to the email.

I personally would want some legal note on this one. So, how about Microsoft ? How about Sony ? How about Nintendo ? (X that one, Nintendo will abandon the console and you can no longer get your games, they suck for this)

Sounds like time for lawmakers to step up to the plate and kick these digital game companies into gear.

Everybody calm down, they aren't saying they will actively try to stop an account being passed down, just that they will not assist with the process.

That said, it is high time we get new laws passed about how digital ownership works and what companies are allowed to get away with in their EULAs. They can say you signed a EULA all they want but if a law passes that makes that portion null and void, it would solve a lot of problems and would be better for the consumer for things like passing down games or in cases where the company goes under or when a license is about to expire so the company tries to delete "purchased" titles from your library.

@AIpha2TheOmega: Legally, this won't cut the mustard. Once Steam figures out your gone, which is not hard at all, they may pull the plug on the account and all games. Pretty risky.

So, yes, laws should be written on this issue, along with ANY digital content, not just games.

@AIpha2TheOmega: Finally a smart comment from someone who actually understands how things work.

If they cared to tell about it it's because that was a thing...
They can't PREVENT you from just sharing your infos, but in the event of someone's passing, who happened to have a huge steam library on a locked PC with a password no one knows which ended up being formated, they simply won't assist you and allow to change login infos to grant you access to a library that clearly wasn't yours...

That is all, plain and simple and to me, it makes sense.

I gave my PlayStation account to my younger brothers, and another PS account to my older brother, both of which contained games. Sony won't ever be able to find out, nor will Steam. :/

And how exactly could they enforce this? like the article says, if I make sure to leave a login / password behind, then how would they even know?

@Specterkingdark: Maybe if it's unused for XXX amount of time? Also, the password to the account is not enough, you need to change the email that the steam account is on. as if you try to change the password, it will send a email for recovery.

@Specterkingdark: I don't think they're trying to enforce no password sharing, just saying they can't do it for you even if you request it yourself or via a will.

@Specterkingdark: There's really no way they could know, unless they have someone digging through obituaries daily to ensure this isn't happening. LOL. Even then, not everyone uses their real name when making an account of any kind.

@nargg: Who said it was hard to find? Looking at my comment, I clearly make mention that they would never know unless they have someone looking up the obituaries.... Also, as mentioned, not everyone uses their real names. I'm basically having to repeat my comment that you replied to.

They do know that most people already share their Login with trusted people, such as Family, don't they???

So unless they're monitoring Death Certificates and cross referencing them with Account Details, I don't see how they're going to keep track and enforce such a rule...

Such a rule kind of violates the Purchaser's Rights... It clearly says "BUY" when you click to get a Game, you then Pay money for said game, thus you OWN the game and things you OWN can be passed down...
If they want to enforce such a Rule then they need to change that button to "RENT" and put a Time Stamp of say 25 Years or something on the Rights to the game and at such time the Game is automatically deleted from your Library...

I feel like there's gotta be a possible Lawsuit here against Valve... Think I'll look into it...

@Bafitis: I am almost certain that the whole point here is that you can't inherit your dead relative's Steam Library, as in transfer ownership of those games to another player's account. So when I die, my son won't just immediately get all the games I owned transferred to his own Steam account. Valve likely won't monitor or even care about passing along the account itself.

@Bafitis: I'm certain the ToS when you install Steam more than likely details how you don't own the game. You can "buy" the privilege of "playing" the game, but not owning.

@Bafitis: You don't own your Steam library. You cannot sell your games to anyone, same as probably most other digital libraries. Digital is very convenient but comes at a price. I wish this wasn't true and a big reason I buy on GoG first for PC games. I'm sure it's all detailed in the huge ToS that no one reads.

@darkelf83, With GOG games you can download directly to your computer... So if I wanted to go through the Hassle of selling it, I could and then Send the Files or even put them onto a Flash Drive, which I've actually done for people... I can't do that with Steam games... So when I Buy from GOG, I actually Own It...

As for Steam, it doesn't take much to share your account, with people you Trust that is...
And if you do want to actually Sell it, you could sell your Entire Account to someone, just make sure any Credit Card or other personal info is removed before hand...

@Bafitis, Yes, but there is the Family Share function, so as long as you give them the Account info for them to keep it active, they can access the games through that function... And if they do away with that function all you have to do is Switch accounts if you want to play a game not in your own library...

There are plenty of ways around this... I think they only made the statement to stir people up...

@arki83: Seems the jokes on your, it's in the UELA that you are legally bound to not sharing. If found out, anyone you give it to could legally be liable for damages. Tread carefully, and call your representatives to write new laws protecting digital rights to heirs, just like anything physical.

@nargg: Seems the joke is actually on you since you can't understand that Steam doesn't require any form of identification to create or maintain an account, they have absolutely no way to prove the person I transfer my account to is not in fact me. Also if I die shortly after giving someone my account, they can't hold a dead person liable for damages. What world do you live in?

@nargg, With GOG you Actually Own the games though, you can download them directly onto your Hard Drive or a Flash Drive and you can do it multiple times... I've given games to other people that way, just throw it on a Flash Drive and give them them Drive, I've done it a few times... You don't need their Installer or App like you do with Steam... I use the Galaxy Agent, makes things a lot easier for me to play the games, but at the same time I still OWN the Game and can do whatever I want with them...

I always cross reference whether or not a game is on GOG that I find on Steam that I want... My GOG library has hundreds of games, whereas my Steam Library has a couple dozen at most... Don't even really remember the last time I bought from Steam or even played one of the few games I have bought from them...

@nargg: Maybe, but with my GOG library I could at least just throw the game installers on a harddrive and will that to my next of kin. : p

But, either way, I just find GOG easier and quicker to use, and they've got a way better refund policy than Steam.
