You Won't Be Texting in AMC Movie Theaters After All

"We have heard loud and clear that this is a concept our audience does not want."

Earlier this week, an executive at movie theater chain AMC floated the idea of making some of its theaters texting-friendly in an attempt to bring in more business from millennials. After facing a wave of criticism, the company has now announced that it has no plans to pursue anything of this nature.

In a statement released this morning, AMC said the feedback on this idea has been "loud and clear."

"Unlike the many AMC advancements that you have applauded, we have heard lour and clear that this is a concept our audience does not want," it explained. "In this age of social media, we get feedback from you almost instantaneously and as such, we are constantly listening. Accordingly, just as instantaneously, this is an idea that we have relegated to the cutting room floor."

It goes on: "With your advice in hand, there will be NO TEXTING ALLOWED in any of the auditoriums at AMC Theatres. Not today, not tomorrow, and not in the foreseeable future."

AMC went on to say that it plans to continue to be "as creative as we can to" improve the movie-going experience. The company mentioned it's spending an estimated $1 billion to enhance its theaters and systems with new sound and audio offerings, among other things.

Any new advancements that AMC makes to its theaters will be done in such a way to never "compromise your love of coming out to the movies." You can read the full statement here.

This all stems from an interview that AMC CEO Adam Aron gave to Variety this week. He said the theater chain--one of the biggest in the country--would consider lifting its ban on texting during movies in a bid to get more young people to come out to the movies.

He said one idea was to have certain sections of theaters "texter-friendly," while another possibility was to designate entire theaters as being open to people who want to text during a film.

"When you tell a 22-year-old to turn off the phone, don't ruin the movie, they hear, 'Please cut off your left arm above the elbow,'" Aron said. "You can't tell a 22-year-old to turn off their cellphone. That's not how they live their life.

"At the same time, though, we're going to have to figure out a way to do it that doesn't disturb today's audiences. There's a reason there are ads up there saying turn off your phone, because today's moviegoer doesn't want somebody sitting next to them texting or having their phone on."

He's also followed up his original comments with a new statement on Twitter.

If you can't put your phone down for 2hrs to watch a movie that you paid for, then you have issues.

@swisdwag: ....ok? That doesn't have much to do with this article. By time you could steal the movie you could buy it on dvd so the point is rather moot.

@swisdwag: It's more the "I'm gonna steal it lulz" thing that was unnecessary really. It sounds like you think you outsmarted them but you still have to wait until it comes out on dvd anyway. So nothings really different then people who buy movies rather than steal them.

Great news. When is it going to be enforced? Every other movie I go to, there is some fucking asshat who thinks that exact moment is the perfect time to update his status on facebook. Put the phone away, you waste of space. It's not just the SOUND that is a pain in the ass. I don't want to see your bright-ass screen while I'm trying to enjoy watching a movie.

I just went to AMC yesterday and noticed higher prices at the concession stand. Which are already outrageous. Time to start stuffing candy and drinks down my pants!

@xxxorcist: I just bring a backpack to the movies with whatever snacks I want. Never been hassled for it. But I live in Canada. Not sure how American theatre chains react to that.

I think every theater should block cell service as soon as the lights dim. You want to use your phone leave the theater....

@blackbeltjones: The problem with that is obvious with that whole theater shooting stuff that occurred. Imagine no one in there would've been able to dial 911, and it could've been a lot worse if cell service was blocked during the movie.

Other than that reason i'm on board with the idea.

I avoid the theaters. They are a waste of money and time imo.

You can get a home theater that is better quality than many of the theaters out there.

No phones, you can pause to go to the bathroom, there isn't a ton of inconsiderate people yacking away... Bring your own food. Plus you can drink, or smoke whatever you want.

At the price point of seeing a movie, you can get the blu-ray (even 3D) of it for almost the same price. Plus they don't take near as long anymore to come out on Bluray. Dec 18 2015 - release of Star Wars VII. April 5th for the Blu ray release. Not even 4 months on the most anticipated movie of all time.

@Lach0121: The best is going mid-day and getting the 5$ price. Smuggle in snacks and it's a super cheap movie day. And it's relatively empty.

@blankfaced: Only fixes a few of the problems compared to using your own home theater setup. But I agree that is the best time to go. If I remember correctly they call that a matinee screening.

@mirage_so3: This is a slight downside. However, if you aren't completely dependent on facebook then it is possible to avoid spoilers.

This is good to see. Although they can't really ban phones in the theater. They can only ban using them. It's not like they are going to frisk you and confiscate your phone when you walk into the theater. Much like how you can't smoke in a theater, even though you can have a pack of cigarettes on you.

I don't get the whole "theater experience" anyway. You pay $15 just to get in, $5-$10 for snacks/drinks, and then you have to hope there are no idiots talking or texting, and no crying kids in the theater. If I wait, I get to watch on my own couch with as many or as few other people as I want, I can pause, eat/drink whatever I bought from the grocery store, and use my phone as little or as much as I want. I can buy the movie for $20, or I can just redbox it for like, $2.

Big screen tv's aren't that expensive anymore... save your money and buy one.

@Daveof89: I haven't had many problems with other people in the theater and general skip the food and drink. I've almost always enjoyed the experience when I go, which is once or twice a year at most, but I'm on the same page as you because of the endless sources of entertainment at home on a comfortable couch. Seeing a movie in the theater can be a social event and it's a nice change of pace occasionally for me.

Millennials have ZERO respect for people in the theater. I spent $25 to see the new Star Wars only to have a group next to me talking to each other loudly while texting through the entire film. A film theater IS NOT YOUR LIVING ROOM. Put your fucking phone away. Quit whining about having to respect people in public spaces. I came this close to incurring an assault charge/making a huge scene by pulling the manager mid film (both would have hurt everyone else's enjoyment of the film). I would be so happy for a massive EMP to wipe everyone's stupid phone.

@kallenx: Do you think your large sweeping statement is true of everyone born around a certain date? If a group of older people are jerks, do you generalize that all people of that age group are jerks as well? If so, I'd say you have a problem my friend.

Edit: BTW, I suppose every generation will have some old men yelling at kids to get off their lawn... Metaphorically speaking :P

@chaosbrigade: Texting is not at all disruptive. Turn brightness all the way down and send off whatever texts. If I texted, it'd be important because I'm watching the movie too.

@Kjranu: If it's actually an important text, then of course that would be understandable and acceptable. But this article is regarding teens or young people who text on their phones for simply for the sake of texting with no consideration for those around them in the theater. During a movie it's dark most of the time, when someone takes their phone out and turn on the screen even on the lowest brightness level, trust me it shows, and it can be distracting.

Not sure who at AMC thought this was a good enough idea that they ever even announced considering it.
