You Can Watch YouTube On Your Nintendo Switch

Mr. Game and Watch.

Nintendo Switch is a little more of a multi-purpose device today, with the addition of a YouTube app. You can now download the YouTube app through the Nintendo Eshop for free, and notably you don't need Nintendo's online subscription service to use it.

The app allows you to watch anything in YouTube's catalog in both docked and handheld modes. That includes tons of original content from users, along with livestreams, how-to guides, music, and more. You can log in with your Google account to access your preferences, playlists, and recommendations.

Now Playing: Nintendo Switch Gets Its Own YouTube App - GS News Update

YouTube is just the second streaming video service to come to Nintendo Switch, after Hulu was added in November 2017. The company is still exploring bringing other video apps like Netflix to the console.

Nintendo Switch is first and foremost a gaming device, and hasn't pursued multimedia functionality as aggressively as its competitors, PS4 and Xbox One. Nintendo just recently started up its own paid service to play most games online, and threw a few other perks into the mix for good measure. It also gives access to cloud saves, and a growing library of classic NES games. This month it will add three more games. Fortunately, though, video services are exempt from the online requirement, so you can stream to your heart's content even if you haven't signed up for the service.

This is Nintendo and to tell you the truth i don't really care about youtube or any of this crap. Today's day and age everybody has a smart phone even the cheapest 50 bucks smart phone carry youtube and all that stuff. My two problems with Nintendo always been the lack of 3rd party support and my second problem is their stone age specs with their consoles. It seems every time a new Nintendo console comes out it always feel that is just a minor update of their previous console and not really a new console.

By the time Nintendo get to 4K we might already have 8K consoles already out. Next Nintendo console might not even be a 4K console and anyone who knows Nintendo know that they never do such jumps in technology like that and going from barely 1080P console to 4K one will be too much of a jump i'm sure that Nintendo will make a stop at 2K before they even think about a 4K console

I don't need it but I'll use it so... yeah this is a good thing in my eyes. Could use the smart phone or laptop but this will be a great option on planes, trains and in automobiles.

Finally. I have my xbox set up in my room but the switch set up in the living room. I can't tell you how many times I cursed Nintendo for not doing this sooner lol.

It's 2018, but that can be said for both sides of the argument. I'm sure some people really need it and oh my God it's 2018 how does this not have it, but personally I have 2 other things hooked up to my TV that can do Youtube and my TV itself which is several years old can also do Youtube. Actually if you count Chromecast, that's 3. Maybe it has a use for handheld? I mean I'm never without my phone when I"m out so even that's pretty weak, but the Switch has a kickstand built in and the slightly bigger screen is also a plus versus a phone.

@jinzo9988: There is no argument. This is a required part of a console in this day and age. No excuse.

@jinzo9988: Employ reality based common sense, son. Not including Youtube on a tablet, even if it just has attached controls and a tv-out, shows you do not know what you are doing.

@keoloko: It's a gaming device. There's litterally hundreds of other devices in your house that run YouTube and Netflix already.

I wonder how many people are going to be rude and use this in public places like planes or libraries. Which is why I'm opposed to the Switch being more than a gaming platform in the first place. I don't want to be on a plane and hear somebody playing a rap song with 500 f bombs a minute. Or trying to read a book while someone watches a Let's Play with an obnoxious streamer. You don't really need volume to enjoy most games. But you do need volume for YouTube.

@rglgathrawn: The solution to this is the same as it's ever been: You politely ask the person to put in their earbuds (or if they're not broke, their noise-cancelling headphones),and thank them for doing so. Then you throat-punch them.

@rglgathrawn: I agree. If society ever gets to the point where everyone is carrying a device that can show them YouTube, the world will be destroyed instantly.

That's the last thing I need on the Switch. My iPad (or any other tablet) does the job nicely...

@chisoxrule: but sometimes I can't decide if I want to carry my iPad or my Switch into the toilet. Do I want to play Mario or do I want to watch Youtube while I'm doing number 2. Now I can doo either!

@129260: Nintendo wanted to make it clear that the Switch is a gaming device first and foremost. They don't want people to confuse it with a tablet. It was a lesson learned from the Wii U, which confused people over what it was (was it an accessory or a console).

@hiphops_savior: this is such a cop out that I keep hearing Nintendo fanboys say. Any modern device should have a YouTube and Netflix app from launch. Nobody would have been confused over what the device was, its about having options. On the plus side, I installed the YouTube app last night and I was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it is.

@hulk123: "Any modern device should have a YouTube and Netflix app from launch"

why should it?

Its a gaming device, thats why you buy it, to play games on it.

And for the record Netflix sucks.

@hiphops_savior: That was because they chose an idiotic name and had horrible marketing. It has nothing to do with what should have been on the Switch day one.

Nice try though
