You can "finish" Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes in 10 minutes

New speedrun video shows game can be "completed" in 10 minutes if you skip side mission content and cutscenes.

One of the most contentious components of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes leading up to its launch today was its "short" length. An earlier report said its main story could be completed in under two hours, leading some to criticize its $20/$30 price point. Now, Eurogamer has published a (spoiler-heavy) video showing that the entire game can be "completed" in 10 minutes.

Importantly, the speedrunner knows exactly what to do, passes over the side mission content, and skips all the cutscenes. This isn't how you'd normally play a video game for enjoyment.

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima weighed in on the Ground Zeroes' length controversy in February, saying the game's non-linear approach means players will find it to have a high degree of replayability.

"GZ offers freedom of approach & play style, which we hope players will enjoy over & over without boring," he said at the time. "I believe people will be satisfied with the 'play time' of GZ and will not stress the 'clear time,' which is a standard for linear games."

Ground Zeroes is the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. For more on Ground Zeroes, check out GameSpot's review.

**** this game. I'm sure it's fun, and I'm also sure it will eventually come bundled as a "Complete Edition" with Phantom Pain in the not too distant future, probably under $50. Patience is the best weapon against greedy dev bullshit. Plenty of games to keep me occupied until then.

And until someone can logically explain to me why Ground Zeroes wasn't just the first two hours of the Phantom Pain, your "HUR! BUT OTHER GAMES CAN BE BEAT FAST TOO! Buuuh!" comments are completely irrelevant. Save for lining Kojima's Foxhound emblazoned wallet with a few more fistfuls of yen, there WAS no excuse. This was a test from the REAL La Li Lu Le Lo to see just how much shit MGS fans are willing to eat. Judging by some of these comments, I suppose the answer to that question turned out to be "a lot".

<< LINK REMOVED >> I think you are totally fair in your questioning of this. But I truly feel that there wasn't any calculated diabolical plan behind the release of this. Phantom Pain is a long ways off, still. And I think Hideo felt are REAL pain, and genuinely wanted to throw us a bone - and this was how he was able to do it. And in a way, if you look at this how I think he would like you to see it - its really a wonderful sandbox full of hours of opportunity for you to lose yourself in this world.

Without the constraints of a plot or narrative, you're free to do whatever you please, play however you want to play, even make up your own stories if you want to get that nerdy. To me this game was a lot like playing with army men as a kid - the green plastic soldiers - if you added a little imagination, you could have hours and hours of fun with the same plastic dudes, covering a lot of ground.

I've been having a lot of fun with this game. There are all kinds of intricacies and depth to the gameplay. This is gameplay at its PUREST form - and this has me very excited for the new metal gear game.

How DARE Kojima give us something to play and to show off what to expect from him in the future because a good majority ofthe launch titles from both consoles were dlayed for the next year or two.

HOW DARE KOJIMA GIVE US A REASONABLY PRICED GAME THAT COST HIM A FEW MILLION DOLLARS TO MAKE TO PAY BACK HIS EMPLOYEES TO THEY CAN FEED HIS FAMILY!

HOW DARE HE!

Never mind the fact that every single Metal Gear Solid game to date, only has two hours of Gameplay when you don't count all the cut scenes.

Are people really this retarded now a days?

<< LINK REMOVED >> Ahh, a "jew" joke on the internet. What a comedic pioneer you must be! Why if Jew jokes, racial slurs, and infinitely regurgitated meme's were actually funny, you'd be like...the Dane Cook of the internet! Which is to say that you'd STILL be an unfunny tool that most people can only tolerate in incremental doses, like a glass of heavy cream to the lactose intolerant.

Not Jewish. Not from Jerusalem. Got the name from a comic book character. I'd give you a gold star sticker for effort except that your tired ass "joke" (assuming that's what it was meant to be) didn't require any, and I'm not entirely convinced that you wouldn't immediately cram the sticker into your perpetually agape mouth and choke to death like the fetal alcohol afflicted simpleton you clearly appear to be. Not that I would mind, of course, but I see little reason to interfere with the inevitable. I'm certain you'll drown in a bowl of spaghettios, swallow an entire pack of D cell batteries or blind yourself with an uncorked piece of silverware or something to that effect. It's so much an if as it is a when, and as I implied with my previous comment, I'm very patient.

If it's really funny though, liiike "choked to death on a poptart your retarded ass attempted to eat directly out of the toaster and you forgot to remove the wrapper" funny, I would appreciate it if you would leave instructions with your caregiver/guardian/invalidwrangler/whatever-the-hell-you-call-the-person-failing-to-raise-you-properly to post the obituary online. You may not have gotten many laughs in life, but that certainly shouldn't stop you from attempting to get a few chuckles on the way out the door! Again though, no rush. If there's one thing I remember from Biology 101, it's that Darwinism takes time!

Aaaaand just under five minutes with a smile! I'll let you decide whether or not you consider this a victory, you extremely pathetic excuse for a "troll" :D

@thebastardsword @pip3dream I wrote, what I thought, a fairly elegant brief paragraph of why I really liked this game, what I liked about it, what I thought people should try and get out of it and how they should view it, and a bit about my thoughts on the value...

Nothing controversial, or even inflammatory or anything.

Stripping out both repeated gameplay and the interwoven cutscene-gameplay story mode is not applicable to a mainstream assessment of the game. Someone who wants to avoid both Peace Walker and MGS4 types of games should stay away from MGS, or maybe try ACiD and Revengeance.

Seems to me you haven't even played this game...seeing how the gameplay itself has been drastically changed and is nothing like previous Metal Gear Solid games.

<< LINK REMOVED >> That's correct. My comment was not even about GZ specifically but MGS series in general. Are you saying GZ has appeal beyond either those who like the MGS brand of stealth action, thus who might be interested in more side missions and repeating missions for higher score, or those who play MGS mainly for its impressive cutscenes with gameplay as a diversion? I would be most interested to hear your take if that's your impression.

From what I read in the reviews, it sounded like GZ beefs up gameplay primarily through side missions and replays, which I thought would be similar in spirit to CO and PW on the PSP. I suppose being able to freely explore the base could make the game play like Far Cry 3. Is that what you were talking about?

Kojima has been pretty open about the fact that there is very little content, but it is intended to have high replayability; you just gotta take it or leave it I guess.

Ugh! You just know those trolls are going to jump all over this, despite the fact that a lot of big-budget games can be completed in a four or five hour speedrun.

Well if that's a speedrun then the guy playing it has to have already played through it at least once, negating any criticism of GZ being beatable in 10 minutes. Gone Home launched at $20 but you can complete it in around a minute if you already know what to do... after initially spending two hours playing the game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I am waaay OCD when it comes to Metal Gear, on my first play through I always have to go through undetected with no kills, or I will restart the mission completely( or saves after boss fights for the old mgs games), so yeah, getting my moneys worth because I'm a weirdo about how I play MGS.

I know thats not the case for everyone else, most people are happy running through sloppily and getting low ranking completions. thats for the second playthrough tho, I usually end up trying to make sure I kill everything and dont care about stealth 2nd time around.

I've watched the video and the commentator says:

"In order to finish it this fast we did have to learn our way through the game by playing it for considerable longer."

While he doesn't say how much time "considerable longer" is it's not like they just picked it up and smashed out a 10 minute run in the first or second go.

If you know what you're doing then a lot of games can be done quickly. Darks Souls has a vid on you-tube of somebody doing it in just over an hour.

Although it is short, at least it is a game... For 30$ these days, we are often sold costumes and other crappy DLC.

Okay, I know this is a prologue, but I'm hearing the 1.5 hour playthrough is a consistently true figure. 'Course, this being Metal Gear, half of that time is cut-scenes.

I'm gonna have to wait for a price drop to justify this one. Not enough sugar for a dime, as they say.

Hideo Kojima has been going on and on about how AAA titles are a dying breed and that everyone is moving to moble games. it seems that most Japanese developers have only been looking at their local audience.

I haven't tried the game yet, but I'd imagine "finishing the game in 10 minutes" is a speed run as many have suggested. I've seen speed runs for very, very long games, covering all content, such as GTA 5, which was completed in under 24 hours. Mind you, I remember reading it was done by an internal tester, but you get the point. To relate, there's speed run videos for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater where the games are beaten in under 1 hour and half, sometimes even in about an hour depending on how fast the person is. If you're playing Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes for the first time, enjoying it for the moments and watching all the cutscenes, there's no way it lasts 10 minutes. Yes, you can argue the price tag, which I definitely disagree with, but I'd imagine if you enjoy Metal Gear Solid or you're a hardcore fan of the series, it's worth it. The way I look at it as well, we're lucky Konami didn't list this game as $59.99 because $29.99 is a steal in some eyes.

Yea so in other words... it's not actually completed in that time, just the main mission... and skipped cutscenes... in a MGS game, yea sure... anything to try and make the game look bad I guess..? Probably a safe bet he didn't use stealth either...
