XCOM Impressions - First Look

This new game's title may sound a lot like a classic turn-based strategy game, but it's actually an action-packed first-person shooter. We take our first look at E3 2010.

Back in the early 1990s, the now-defunct studio Microprose captured the imagination of nerds everywhere with a tactical PC strategy game called X-Com: UFO Defense. The game put you in control of a squad of human freedom fighters opposing an alien invasion by fighting harrowing tactical battles on randomly generated maps against unknown numbers and varieties of aliens. Then it had you take the spoils of war (namely, alien technology) and use them to research powerful experimental weapons to bring into combat. Years later, 2K Marin, the studio responsible for BioShock 2, is now working on XCOM, a first-person shooter that will attempt to include elements of that original game but will also focus on fast-paced shooting action and character-driven stories.

No Caption Provided

The new game takes place during an idealized version of the American 1950s--a time of innocence, white picket fences, and burgeoning conspiracy theories. Your character is special agent William Carter, the head of XCOM, a secret government agency specifically put together to combat what appears to be an alien invasion by researching every reported alien sighting, rescuing civilians whenever possible, and collecting intel on the aliens that can be converted to research. That research can then be used to gain access to those wonderful, wonderful experimental weapons.

Our hands-off demonstration started with a car ride into an ordinary-looking airplane hangar, where day workers lugged cargo boxes around boxy 1950s-era cars and up a central ramp. After getting out of our own car, we walked up that same ramp to find that it led to the secret headquarters of XCOM itself, an office with dozens of operators manning phone stations listening in on any and all reported alien incidents. On entering, we were accosted by Angela, our female assistant, who handed us the briefing for the most recent mission reported to HQ--a rescue mission to save a hysterical woman in the California suburbs who put in a terrified call about being attacked by "…things!"

However, this wasn't the only mission available to us at this time--while Angela was standing off to the side of the briefing room giving us the details, our character was actually staring full on at the giant, wall-mounted map of the USA, which pointed out two other potential missions with different purposes. In addition to rescue missions, Walker can take on anomaly missions, which may yield a few rare chunks of elerium, the energy-rich alien mineral used to power experimental weapons, or unknown missions, which may offer dangerous new alien life forms to battle (and also to research). We're told by 2K Marin staffers that these missions will not only offer different rewards; in some cases, they will be exclusive to each other--taking one mission now may mean that the others will no longer be available when you finish. The staffers also hinted that your choice of missions may have effects on the game later on.

We decided to take the rescue mission, which Angela reluctantly endorsed, after which, she reminded us to pay a visit to Mal, the compound's top scientist and researcher. We stopped by Mal's workbench to find that he had been hard at work creating a new kind of incendiary grenade specifically intended to target a class of aliens known as the blob. We stocked up on these handy toys and also made a run past XCOM HQ's gun rack, picking out a standard-issue shotgun and a not-so-standard-issue experimental lightning gun--a weapon that almost looked like it had classic TV set rabbit ears for a gun barrel. On our way out, we met with our away team, two smartly dressed G-men who would accompany us on the mission as computer-controlled squadmates.

We then skipped ahead to the mission proper, which took place in a quiet, sunny suburb full of nice houses, nice cars, and exactly zero people. While our buddies wondered allowed why it was so quiet, we started noticing subtle but telltale signs that the alien blob just might have been through the area, such as traces of black slime along the ground, a gigantic black smear underneath a child's baseball cap and baseball mitt, a dead dog covered in black slime, and a crashed car with a dead man in the driver's seat covered in black slime. Finally, there was a dying man crawling out of his home covered from head to toe in black slime and vomiting out even more of the stuff before collapsing in a heap and dying. While this last fatality was tragic, it gave us an opportunity to whip out our in-game camera and take a photo of the slime-covered corpse--a photo that, the 2K Marin staffers explained, could later be brought back to HQ and used to fund new research. And once we reached this house, we heard a woman screaming for help and took that as our cue to spring into action.

Guns drawn, we leapt into the house to find that several blobs--black puddles of goo that slithers along walls and floors and leaves a trail of slime behind--had infiltrated the house. We wasted no time and drew our trusty shotgun, blasting the first few at point-blank range after one nearly killed us by leaping in our face. When sufficiently injured, these creepy critters tend to sit still and begin bubbling up like boiling water in a pot. When killed, the bubbles all pop, leaving a crusty, dehydrated husk and a wisp of steam. We hunted them all throughout the house, switching off to the experimental grenades, which often killed the aliens with a single, well-aimed direct hit, as well as with the lightning gun, which fired several streams of crackling electric energy seemingly randomly within a certain radius in front of us. We then worked our way up to the second floor to find the lady of the house, covered in goop and struggling to fight off a blob from getting near her face. A few shotgun blasts later, and we had finished it off, but not before we had lost one of our computer companions--an event that 2K Marin staffers suggest is "very, very bad for you."

No Caption Provided

All that remained of the mission was to head back outside, jump in our car, and go home, except that that's when the giant alien spacecraft (if that's what it was) known as The Titan made its appearance in the sky. After leaving the house, we saw the sky begin to shimmer and then eventually warp until a small, localized black hole effectively caused a small hurricane in the neighborhood, tearing away at us and all the other objects in the environment. Through this shimmering aperture emerged a gold-colored column that briefly glowed white, showing what looked like a highly advanced technological skeleton. Our remaining partner drew his weapon and opened fire on the structure--a bad move on his part because the Titan responded by morphing from its original rectangular pillar shape to the strange, gold-colored concentric circles that appear in some early concept art for this game. After changing shape, the Titan zapped our remaining squadmate with a single energy blast that covered him in what appeared to be black soot up to his waist, immobilizing him, and then fired a second blast that completely vaporized him.

At this point, we decided to run--not walk--to our car, to which the Titan responded by apparently causing the weather storm to buffet us even harder, while more blobs appeared from out of nowhere, flitting up and down the streets. We made it to our car just as the Titan began charging up for a final blast that might have been the end of us.

While we've seen very little of the game so far, we're both comforted to hear that the 2K Marin team includes many loyal fans of the original X-Com, and we're also looking forward to seeing where the team takes the game from here. XCOM is scheduled for release on the Xbox 360 and PC next year.

I wish 2k Marin headquarters would be hit by a blaster launcher round and everyone there, abducted and used for alien probing studies. I've been playing since Zaxon and I've never seen one of these "remakes" be anywhere as good as the original, even if they just try to copy them and add a twist to them (Bioshock/Fallout 3). They may fool new players to think they are "oh so great" but they are nothing compared to the original. And this one simply has nothing to do with it. A FPS? Screw that, my cat can play FPS and she's missing a freaking leg. X-Com was a great game because you had to use your brain, you have to prioritize, you have to crawl every step of the way, you constalty lost people but had to move on. They don't make games like those anymore because today "gamers" just can't hadle anything that doesn't gives them instant satisfaction. And then these remakes come along, trashing good games names just to make a few extra bucks because of the free advertisement they don't deserve since they didn't make the original. Gah whatever, this game is going to sink anyway. Thanks for ruining my day.

Make a new X-Com turn-based strategy game. Keep a lot of the original stuff, like exploring the UFO's and monitoring earth. Just update it with new graphics! I will give the FPS a try, but it better not destroy the classic X-com game. Nothing beats the first X-Com. It is probably my favorite game ever!

Respect was given to the Fallout series. 2k should take a lesson. Many of the gamers who spend the big bucks are in their 30's and have been playing games forever. To try to grab the attention of young gamers at the same time pissing in our face is disgraceful.

Thanks for defiling what's probably my favourite game of all time. Next time, 2K, please grow a pair, take a risk for a change, and start your own game series with its own name instead of stealing one from a venerable classic so that it does half the marketing for you. What are they going to do next? Make a GTA clone under the name of SimCity?

*Just throwing my hat in with the rest of the PC Gamers that are upset at the ruining of a classic* Also, agrees with humorguy_basic about it tanking on PC and being blamed on piracy- of course it will, that's the classic catch-all excuse.

@Tidal_Abyss, I agree with you about not being able to give a thumbs up or down to GS staff posts, but on an up note, my side of the argument has had thumbs up, and you're post agreeing with my somewhat has got thumbs up, so I think it easy to see he would have got thumbs down - overall then, it's what PC gamers have to do - read 'between the lines' in order to get any info. For example, at the moment we have E3 and on so many sites you don;t see specific PC sections. If a site has a tab saying PC E3 (Gametrailers for example) and you click on it, you are confronted with the generic E3 page covered with console news. So yes, PC gamers are 3rd class citizens in gaming nowadays and get no respect, the fact that the X-Com title has been added to this shooter is a huge insult to long time PC gamers. The gamer who, if they weren't laying out their hard earned money to small companies like Blizzard and Bioware and Bethesda, back in the early 90's would mean these companies maybe not existing today!

While a true make of the original X-COM would be cool, I'm willing to give this a shot. I know a lot of people are annoyed it's "another FPS", but that's what a lot of people said about Metroid Prime when it was first revealed, and that worked out great. I'm willing to give this the benefit of the doubt until its released.

Am I the only one wondering why you can't rate on a gs staff post? lol. No reason they shouldn't have to take the ups/downs like the rest of us ;) Far as what you 2 are "talking" about, I have to say I side more with humorguy_basic, PC Gamers (to which I am strictly), are treated as 3rd (or worse) class citizens frequently, & the very PC (politically correct in this case) and cautious answer kevin gave doesn't really inspire you to believe him or gs in general gets it. The game- well, they could do this game without slaughtering a classic and offending original fans. X-Com is still played and popular among many PC gamers and such a response from the community shouldn't have been unexpected. They could've released a multi-plat typical shooter without putting the X-Com name on it and the console kiddies would've been all over it as usual and the PC gamers wouldn't have a gripe. Seriously makes you think the game must suck if the only hype they can spin is to put a true classic's name on it and ride it right into the grave.

I dont get it... surely all these multi-billion dollar game companies have teams of people studying what the "market" wants? And I really don't believe I am mistaken when I say - Gamers want X-Com back! - But the real X-Com, not generic FPS #576321-6 that comes out every Tuesday. How can an IP that is worth gold in gamer standards be left in a void of nothingness for 15 years, and then the best they come up with is this... boggles the mind.

Why take one of the best turn based strategy games of all time and make it into an fps. I could understand if they did both, but they havent released a turn based x com in more than 15 years. That's like hiring the best chef in the world to build a car.

Me and some other guys are making a remake of the first original x-com game, though with some modifications. For example, you can now play multiplayer 1 vs 1, aliens vs x-com with all the good parts included, such as base building and researching. We are currently updating the graphics as well. Check out our project at << LINK REMOVED >> There is a demo you can try but it´s pretty outdated. We will soon release a new version which is much more stable and fun to play. Cheers!

@Humorguy_basic -- I write for a living, so I have a full command of the language, though I appreciate the concern. It is just a word, and was not meant in a derogatory fashion, but in an affectionate one. Additionally, I am a PC gamer and a member of the media, so have intimate knowledge of both subjects. And GameSpot has given 9+ scores to several PC-only games over the last several years, such as those I gave to The Sims 3 and Crysis Warhead. I love games for all systems, including the PC, and I think there is room for all sorts of games and ideas in our beloved pastime. I hope XCOM turns out well. There are lots of wonderful games out there, and I wish you much happy gaming no matter which system and which genres you love most.

@Kevin-V Then you have no knowledge of the English language, and of course if you are Andrew's friend you must want consoles and dumb shooters to take over too. It's obvious from this site and other gaming sites that PC gamers are 3rd class citizens, and calling us anything but 'gamers' like you would call any console gamer is indeed meant as a slur and says only nerds wants games that make you use your brain and gamers don't - and therefore you want to support gamers! After all, come back and tell me what PC only title in the last 2-3 years has scored above 90? And for that matter, any non U.S developed game? That should teach you about PC gaming and the media, which you obviously have no knowledge of.

Good to know that 2K Games is using the most interesting traits of BioShock and System Shock for this game. There is some sort of system for experimental research to appease the fans of the original X-COM games (myself included). I was turned off about the inclusion of Elerium-115 at first, but this game was set in the 1950s, so I am not sure whether 2K Games is screwing with the canon or not. Also, I am very intrigued with this statement: "...we had finished it off, but not before we had lost one of our computer companions--an event that 2K Marin staffers suggest is "very, very bad for you."..." Part of the fun of the original X-COM (get the spelling RIGHT, Take-Two!) games was the recruitment and nurturing of counter-alien agents. I suspect 2K Games intends to have these dudes to either stay with the player character and grow stronger with every mission they survive, or tie into the mission debriefing and its level of success (& the amount of rewards for completing the mission). It's most likely the latter, but either would have been a respectful homage to the original X-COM games. And thankfully, the player character is not a completely FBI spook now, and instead is part of a semi-permanent taskforce - which is exactly what the X-COM organizations in the original games were. I despise this game, but with every bit of juicy news that 2K Games releases, this apprehension is being slowly chipped away. But no matter how good it turns out, I am still going to hate Take-Two for exploiting the X-COM name for its next shooter.

Right, this game, by any other name would still look mediocre are best. To tack Xcom to it is just trouble. The generic FPS format alienates (another pun?) old fans, and doesnt do anything fresh to draw new ones. Blobs? Blobs. Thats pretty exciting :|

Any long time PC gamer noticed the slur? "Back in the early 1990s, the now-defunct studio Microprose captured the imagination of NERDS everywhere with a tactical PC strategy game called X-Com: UFO Defense' The words Nerds, as in anal-retentive, as in 'get with the program and learn about new thing you old codger!' The phrase '...imagination of GAMERS everywhere (and ever since) back in the mid 1990s, with a tactical PC strategy game called X-Com: UFO Defense' would have been much more accurate and much more respectful. The multiformat gaming media today sneer at PC gamers of the 90's and this use of the word 'nurds' is just one more dig at us! This will be just another sci-fi shooter, it will do well on console, which is what it's aimed at, and will bomb on PC - and you bet those low sales will be blamed on piracy!

This is not XCOM. It might be the best game of it's type ever made, but it's still not XCOM, and it never will be, and for that reason, I shall avoid this like the plague. XCOM is one game you do NOT sully the name of, and still expect hardened fans to buy your game... what fools they are!

I'm all for re-imagining old series and franchises (ex: Prince of Persia, the Hulk movie, etc.), but honestly, this really has nothing to do with XCOM. It's like calling a game "Lord of the Rings" because it has elves and orcs in it. The game sounds like a good game in its own right, but I don't see why they feel like they can call it XCOM. Seems like a cheap marketing trick to get fans of the original to take a look and get their hopes up for something akin to the original--which this clearly isn't.

I was impressed with the new direction this took and I hope they really run with it otherwise it won't be unique enough to stave off the rabid fan base that can't handle change. I loved XCOM in it's original form but this feels like a lot of the elements that were in the original. My only concern is cookie cutter missions. They all better be interesting as well as a decent storyline. Oh and one more thing. I really hope it is as long a game as the others were, this new trend to charge 60$ and only provide 15 hours of game with little or no replayability is starting to make me look elsewhere for fun.
