Xbox Series X Launches On November 10, Priced At $499

Microsoft has officially confirmed the price and release date for the Xbox Series X, the more powerful of its two next-gen systems.

After months of waiting for an answer, we finally know when Xbox Series X will launch and how much it will cost. Microsoft's next-gen console will be released on November 10, albeit without the now-delayed Halo Infinite to serve as its biggest launch game.

Microsoft announced the launch date today along with the price of the Xbox Series X: $499. The more-powerful console will be supported alongside the cheaper Xbox Series S, which is out on November 10 for $299 and supports the same games. That system is digital-only, however, cannot support native 4K resolution, and includes a significantly weaker GPU that is capable of 4 TFLOPs instead of the 12 TFLOPs on Xbox Series X. However, its CPU is very similar. It will be able to load up games in a fraction of the time as past Xbox One systems. Like its more expensive sibling, it also supports ray tracing.

Now Playing: Xbox Series S VERSUS Series X: Which Is Right For You?

Xbox Series X and S pre-orders will go live on September 22. In addition to buying the systems outright, they will be available through monthly payments as part of the Xbox All Access program in 12 countries. It will cost $35 per month for the Xbox Series X while the Xbox Series S will be $25 per month. Both provide two years of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, including an EA Play membership. It appears this may actually save some money compared to buying the console and two years of the service on its own, albeit you have no choice in whether or not you want to subscribe until this program.

Microsoft did not intend to share the news quite yet. The recent Xbox Series S leak prompted the official announcement of that console, leading to this batch of Series X news. On Twitter, Phil Spencer revealed this was all set to be announced next week and praised the team for dealing with the unexpected change. If that were the case, it would have only been about one week before pre-orders opened.

Taco Bell is also giving you the chance to get an Xbox Series X console slightly before everyone else. All you have to do is download the Taco Bell app and sign up for the rewards program to be entered into drawings, and the system will potentially be yours before November 10.

As noted above, while Halo Infinite won't make the launch as previously expected, we will have several big-name AAA games releasing on the system out of the gate. These include two of Ubisoft's biggest 2020 games, Assassin's Creed Valhalla and Watch Dogs Legion--in Valhalla's case, the release date has been moved forward. Gears Tactics, previously a PC exclusive, will also launch on November 10. We will likely hear more about some of these games at the Ubisoft Forward event taking place tomorrow, September 10. This event will also feature news on some unannounced titles.

We are still waiting on a final release date and price for Sony's PS5. The system was fully unveiled over the summer along with some of its biggest games. Like Microsoft, Sony is releasing two versions of the console, but they will be identical except for either having or omitting a disc drive.

Why did this article and announcement not show up anywhere on the front page or the whole list of news that I've scrolled through yesterday and just now? Did it get pushed out by all the clickbait garbage? If I hadn't randomly taken a look at some related news at the bottom of another article I still wouldn't have seen it.

But the price ended up being just what I've expected. And Sony's will most likely be the same. Now it only remains to be seen for how much less they want to offer the disc driveless model as some puny price difference like $50 should get hardly anyone to choose that model over the standard one. Only the folks who already buy all their games digitally but they would have bought it either way.

I'm going to get the XSX. It's the better deal for me. It's all about the bang for the buck and the XSX has it over PS5, IMHO.

Only one question remains.....

Can Sony pull off a miracle and make a come back with better pricing and better console features?

Probably...BUT ONLY if Sony becomes Pro-Consumer like Microsoft have been with Xbox.

@johnny0779: $35 a month 0% interest for the most powerful console that you will own in 24 months, EA play, xbox Live , and ultimate gamepass that includes over 100 games day one. That is a very compelling package.

What PS5 launch price can compete and what features do they market with a confirmed weaker system? Curious to see what Sony does.

@6t4gp: That's $840 in total. How much does Xbox Live and that Gamepass cost per year normally? $170 or more?

@Atzenkiller:

XSX $500

Ugamepass

$15 month x24 $360

Ea play

$30 a year 2years $60

Total. $920. That compared to the $840 you pay with the bundle. .

I have the cask and I already have a year and a half left on my Ultimate game pass but, I can save $80 with the bundle and have the UGP I have left after the 24 months bundle is finish.

@6t4gp: Or if like probably most people you see no reason to ever pay for EA's subscription service the difference would be $20. Not a big ripoff. It just means that you're paying for 2 years in advance for something that you might not make use of throughout all that time. But of course if you are playing games from that game pass every single month, then I guess it would be worth it. But last I checked only some games make it on there.

@Atzenkiller: $20 is $20 dollars. It's still cheaper than upfront cost plus you do get EA play and save $80.

Do you have gamepass or EA play? I have played a lot of games I would have never bought before gamepass. For me it really got me back into gaming. Plus all first party games will be on gamepass day one.

@6t4gp: I did pay for MS' Gamepass for PC once. $1 for the first month, which was enough to play Obsidian's new game basically for free. Sure, that way nice. But aside from that there was nothing of interest there to me. I tried out that Halo game without the Master Chief since it was the only one available at the time. And my god was that boring. But yeah, after that I let the 1-2 weeks or so I that I had left of that month expire as the selection of games was just too limited for me.

And I also tried EA Play once. Really only because I felt a sudden urge to play through the career mode of some sports game, similar to one of the Fight Night games I've played on the PS2. So I signed up for that to play through the latest UFC game's career mode. Which was really short. And after that I also tried out Anthem but it was really not that great. And that's it. There's literally nothing else that I could ever want to play from EA. And any older games like DA3 you can buy for a handful of bucks. No need to subscribe for their service for a month if you can own the game for the same price.

But the way you make it sound your budget for games seems to be limited. Are you taking advantage of the sales that are going on weekly now on the PSN store? Cause you can get pretty much any game for a decent price there if you're willing to wait a few months. No need to play whatever garbage they offer you for free with some subscription. So I'm really not sure how a service like this with its very limited game selection could get you back into gaming, when having full access to all the games that are out there couldn't. Is it the lure of "free stuff? Personally I always prefer quality over quantity, so getting a bunch of games I'd normally never play for free won't change anything about that.

@Atzenkiller: I had to go to gamepass because what you said didn't make since. I don't think you realize all the games on the console are on the PC. They dont have the same library.

Yes, I found Halo 4 boring also. But, they have other games that are good. I don't have a budget issue. If I can save money on something I'm going to buy anyway. I'm getting either the Samsung 4K QLED 85" Q80T or Q90T to go with my Xbox Series X because my current 82" tv is only 1080p. I'm waiting to see which performs better with the Xbox.

@6t4gp: Well, good to know that the library of available games is larger on the Xbox. But I don't own one and don't plan to ever change that and the Gamepass for PC is not worth it at all.

You still haven't explained though why having access to some games through a subscription could have somehow revived your passion for videogames if you can afford to buy any new game at full price if you wanted to. What exactly has changed for you after you signed up for that gamepass? Was it just a mental thing because now you no longer needed to think about buying games, you could just download and try them out right away without thinking twice? Doesn't sound like much of an issue for someone to whom money is no concern.

@cyrribrae: Right but are the prices announced for all access in CAD? Also you get to keep the console after you paid off 24months? This is still new to me as a Canadian but has me debating to either do that or just buy the console outright. Thanks.

@Ice-Cube: Gotcha. $25/mo and $35/mo US for S and X. But no, Canadian prices are not released yet for All Access. But it will be available for Canada through EB games. Yes, pay $25/mo for 24 months and you'll get a Series S to keep and Game Pass Ultimate (200+ games + most EA games now) throughout that whole period. It's a fantastic deal on the US side - it's actually CHEAPER than buying both outright at full price (which is very rare with financing plans). I can't imagine they won't match that in CA.

New update, those in Australia EB games can buy the Xbox series X for $399, when Xbox one X traded in.

$200 upfront fee, that's a exceptional deal, must check if any deals going in gamestop.

@Crazy_sahara: I assume you're talking about Australian Dollars and that the console there will cost more than AU$500. Otherwise trading in a console that still costs US$500 currently to get $100 off the new one would be a really dumb move.

@Atzenkiller: Not necessarily, once the series s releases, it will be 399 for those in Australia ($350 trade in credit, no shipping fees, no online fees with eBay) and the Xbox one x, will be around $250 USD, or $350 aud, and we are talking about the series X not s.

So the Xbox series X is $749aud inclusive of tax,(subtract $749 and it's $399 and the Xbox series X California, Texas is about $534 dollars.

So I don't understand your point, because it's a dumb one, unless the series s never existed then your point would be valid.

@cejay0813: Nah, they couldn't do that. We all know what happened when Sony tried it with the PS3. It only started selling well after they started dropping the price to decent levels. But for the next console gen after that $600 would probably be the minimum. Especially with the way phone prices have been going up, now casually sitting at over $1000 for some phones.

So I could basically get this for the price of a 3070 and I wouldn't have to pay scalper fees when I actually find a 3070. My One X is basically my best gaming rig now and this would be a big upgrade for not a lot of money. If by some chance I get a windfall and can build a new PC, I would, but graphics cards prices the last 5 years has not been that inviting.

Those are really fair prices, and unlike Sony, Xbox usually does alot of sales on consoles, so you can see that Series X fall to $399 next holiday season If Microsoft bundles like a 6 month or a year subscription to Gamepass that little console will sellout fast.

Gamepass also just incorporated EA play free of charge Mircosoft might do well this generation TBH from a business standpoint

@alastor529: Sony is forecasted to sell at a 2:1 ratio during launch.

Basically 2 PS5 will sell for every XSX/XsS.

The matter of fact is that Sony has had the lead for many years now. Dominating most of Japan and Europe in sales and brand preference. Not to mention the United States where it does see the most competition from the Xbox. Nevertheless the Sony brand is very strong globally and will outsell the Xbox.

Xbox can catch up with its new strategy but it will be over long term.

@emmanuelguerrero: That the PS5 will greatly win out against the new main Xbox sales wise I have no doubts over. But I think their cheap model will sell pretty well, too. Simply because it's about as cheap as a Wii used to be. Not every parent wants to buy their kids a new console for $500, so that cheap option is exactly for those people. And Sony is not offering any such option as the version with no disc drive probably won't cost much less. Unless they offered it for $400, in which case it would be pretty close pricewise to the cheap Xbox. Without compromising on the hardware and only leaving out the disc drive. Then Sony would really crush MS. But we'll see how things turn out when Sony finally announces their prices.

@emmanuelguerrero: We don't even know what the manufacturing quota is. Both consoles will likely sell out during launch, which means that comparing launch numbers is kind of meaningless. But, we'll see. I wouldn't expect MS to ever overcome a Sony sales lead - but also, that's not their business model. Their goal is to get people into the ecosystem and then monetize them, and if that's on PC or even on phone? Perfect.

that said.... $299 is a heck of a nudge.

@cyrribrae: What ecosystem are you actually talking about? The Game Pass? As far as I can tell that's the only "ecosystem" they have. But not everyone who buys an Xbox will pay for the Gamepass and it's even less so on PCs. But if MS isn't selling consoles then they have no way to get people onto their Gamepass as aside from their consoles the only platform where it's available is the PC. And there's much more popular competitors to be found there.

If MS can't sell their new consoles then their gaming division will die out completely. They could focus on just trying to sell their Gamepass to PC owners. But hell, how are they supposed to be able to do that once they shut down their console sector? The Gamepass only exists because of the Xbox. MS wouldn't be able to create such a servive for PCs only. Their whole gaming division lives and dies with the Xbox.

@Atzenkiller:Console sales are important. I'm just saying they aren't the end all, be all. MS is going to make a ton of money, and next to none of it will come from console sales. And furthermore, hoping on attach rate is a flawed assumption - selling more consoles does not mean making more money. It's about better monetizing the people who are in your ecosystem.

And what ecosystem is that? Well, for PlayStation.. it's PlayStation. But for Microsoft? It's Xbox, it's Win 10 store, it's Android devices, it's iPhones, it's Switch, it's Steam, it's even freaking PlayStation. This year, 3 different Microsoft games have topped the Steam charts. And MS games have made up a significant part of the top 10 for much of the year. And most people using Steam? They paid for a Windows license too.

Why does Game Pass matter more than consoles? Because the people matter more than the devices. Microsoft is making a bet that by investing in the person playing the games, allowing them to take their experience everywhere - even to rival platforms, they create customers that stick with the brand. They're making bets that even if Game Pass doesn't make money at all, that the goodwill and the evangelizers that they create through the service will not only entrench them further in the Xbox ecosystem but will also get them to bring others into the system.

And like you've said yourself in these comments, that's exactly what the aggressive pricing and the pro-consumer moves that MS are doing are designed to do. You're maybe taking exception to my words, but at the end of the day, MS is doing what you say they should - just in a different way than you expect.
