Xbox Series S An Open Secret After Controller Leak

A white next-gen Xbox controller has surfaced online, and it mentions "Xbox Series S" specifically.

One of Microsoft's worst-kept next-gen secrets is the rumored second Xbox model that will live alongside the Xbox Series X, which is believed to be called the Xbox Series S. Now, even more evidence of the console has emerged in the wild thanks to a controller that seemingly went on sale too early, effectively confirming the existing of a second console, as well as its name. This comes just as the Xbox Series X launch date was announced for November. Despite the leaks, Microsoft still won't make an official confirmation of the console. Publicly, it has only talked about Xbox Series X thus far.

The Verge has confirmed that the leaked images making the rounds today of a white next-gen Xbox controller are indeed real. The text on the packaging mentions that the controller works with the Xbox Series X and the Xbox Series S consoles, the latter of which has not been announced. The controller will also work on the standard Xbox One and PC, as well as iOS and Android for xCloud streaming. As the second console has not yet been announced, we have no official details on the differences between the Series S and Series X.

Following this, another of these new Xbox controllers was found in the wild, as shared on Reddit in the post embedded below. It features the same packaging that references Xbox Series S. Both controllers were reportedly sold in the Chicago area.

The enduring rumor is that the Series S console is the cheaper next-gen Xbox model, the one known popularly by its "Lockhart" codename. This system is rumored to have 4 teraflops of GPU performance and 7.5 GB of usable RAM. It will reportedly have the same CPU as the Series X, allowing it to run the same games with faster loading speeds but at lower resolutions than on Series X.

The latest rumor is that Microsoft will officially announce the Series S during an event in August, so it may not be long until we know more about it. There are also rumors that the Series S will not have a disc drive, which would put it more in line with the disc-free PS5 that's on the way. However, that console otherwise sports the same hardware as the disc drive-equipped model, unlike the rumored Series S that is expected to be substantially cheaper than the Series X.

Xbox boss Phil Spencer told GameSpot that it might release additional next-gen Xbox SKUs, and Lockhart is expected to be one of them. "Obviously, in the name 'Series X,' it gives us freedom to do other things with that name so that we can create descriptors when we need to," Spencer said in December 2019, all but confirming multiple next-gen Xbox consoles are coming.

I’m definitely getting the standard versions, digital-versions will be nice for people who can’t afford the standard versions or are not bothered about physical copies like some of us. I like buying physical special editions of games I really like

@letsgame82: Why buy digital if you have a choice?

Why eliminate the value it's just impulsive & lazy.

How do they (Sony and MS) remove the second-hand market and prevent people borrowing /sharing games with their friends?
Convince everyone to buy digital versions.

How do they convince everyone to buy digital only?

Release two versions of the console - one with disc drive, one without; make the one without cheaper to get people in, normalise it, by the time people realise it will be too late.

"[If anyone argues we'll just say it's better for the environment/more convenient blah blah, you get the gist]"

Clever, aren't they? I'm probably just being too cynical

@ssdd_again:

Except, not everybody’s a simpleton. Some people aren’t new to the market; therefor know that most digital versions of everything is a total ripoff, and better deals can be found at brick & mortar stores.

Then there’s those who’re also in the market for a UHD player - so the regular PS5 makes much more sense in this case.

@ssdd_again: That’s not true at all , as a hardcore console gamer, I’m only interested in the consoles with disks at the moment, if servers go down U can still play offline on games I have on disk, can’t redownload games if servers are off

@ssdd_again: No, that's about right. You know people will buy the cheaper console and you know people are more comfortable with buying digitally now that digital sales have surpassed 50% or something like that. If people really want the discs, charge a premium since you can reasonably bet that people who care enough about discs to still want them will pay extra.

Not necessarily how things will play out, but that's a perfectly valid strategy. In my experience, people who get too hung up on buying things exactly the way they want it will eventually stop buying and just stick to what they have, so it's not really worth appealing to a waning market for too long.

So... this controller should more features other than the improved d-pad and the media-sharing / capture button in the middle, yes? Otherwise the DualSense has put them on notice.

@Jarrkha: Notice? You mean like noticing the Xbox One controller has had adaptive triggers since 2013? You mean like noticing that the DualSense isn't that 'new' at all? that kind of notice?

What other features are you expecting from the XsX controller?

Hope it's not digital only like the PS5 digital. I won't buy a digital only console.

Id just wait for the standard one to drop in price.

Does anyone else think the fact that the first post is written completely in Arabic expect for the words Xbox Series is a little weird. If these were “sold in Chicago” why is the post advertising it written in a different language?

Naming confusion on console names was specifically designed to confuse parents & grandparents, so they will just buy both the X & S to save Christmas & birthdays!

X will be my main gaming console & S will be my new emulation station for retros! PS5 in the future after a few exclusives get pumped out.

In another thought, this will mean more bad news for XB as some 3rd party devs will see XB as more of a headache to port certain 3rd party games to & we will lose games!

@just1mohr: Your last point is utterly incorrect. Developing for Xbox is *identical* to developing for Windows.

The "X" has *always* meant "DirectX."

There's a set of libs, a handful of hooks (most optional), and an onboarding portal + process. Same for Steam, same for EGS.

@Pyrosa: Well, if that is the case then why aren't some of these 3rd party games on PS4 not ported over to XB? Games such as Space Hulk Deathwing? They said it was going to be for XB1 as well & then said sorry we can't do it! Also games like the EDF series were on the XB360 & no longer on XB1. Many other games that are not contracted for exclusive are not being ported over if it is so easy? Sounds like more effort is required on their part & they are not willing to pump in the extra money.

I don't know who keeps asking for these half-assed cheap/Pro versions of consoles. It beats the whole point of having one and it gives developer an extra headache.

If you're OCD'ing on gaming hardware, you'd be far better of into PC gaming.

Microsoft needs to tread mighty carefully with this alleged S.

That other console's two versions are exactly alike except for the absence of a disk drive so if the S is in any way lesser performing than the X and the S turns out to be the same price as the disk free version of that other console, they gots trouble.

@GalvatronType_R: I really don't think a Series S will matter as much as people think It should just because of a potentially lower price. Games on It would still look like a current gen 7yold console and that's not what most people want , despite a being $100/$150+ cheaper than the digital version of PS5. Seems like It's basically just replacing the Xbox One X , and that's not worth dragging down 9th gen multiplat games or first party Xbox games across the board.

@GalvatronType_R: The Xbox One had the Xbox One X and the PS4 had the PS4 Pro. This is no different.

@GalvatronType_R: it won’t be. It’s replacing the base Xbox one where the Series X replaces the One X, and it’ll probably be $300ish I’d guess.

It’s a new thing to do and I’m not sure how it’ll play out, but it’s going to be cheaper, which would help adoption too

@teshammutna: Confused people generally know how to google really well. Parents, if they can't even google can always go to a store and ask someone who works there which one is which. Its really not that complicated. If someone who plays games on console can't figure out one console from another, they have more concerning issues to work out.

@teshammutna: We're talking 2 SKU's here, and the new games will play on both.

I think I have enough faith in people to believe that they can handle 2 pieces of information at once 😉

We live in a age where you can preview any product on YouTube before you buy it. You can read reviews before you buy. This is not the 90's...smh

@teshammutna: Yeah, it's also weird given the specs the Series S's gpu is weaker than the Xbox One X's gpu and S has less ram too. At this point the S is pretty much an Xbox One X Pro that can play newer games with it's higher end cpu. But it's going to be a lot weaker due to only having 4 tera flops and less ram.

@nomadie: well, it’s the replacement for the base Xbox One, and much better than that. Remains to be seen how this will play out, but it’s interest if nothing else. Gives a lower entry point, and is still great hardware, except in comparison with the high end model.

@wolfpup7: I think people sometimes forget that not everyone has a 1440p or 4K monitor or a 4K TV, and if someone doesn't have those things then they don't need to pay for all that power that's doing nothing for them. You can get downsampling and increased framerates with fewer resources in a much cheaper package when things are being rendered at 1080p. The real question is how are they going to market it to that point?
