Xbox Scorpio Making "Amazing Progress," Spencer Says

"We are feeling good about schedule."

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has provided an update regarding how the Project Scorpio console is coming along. Spencer said he attended a day-long meeting for the console this week and is optimistic about the company's ability to have it out on schedule next holiday.

"I'm in a day-long review of where the team is on Scorpio right now," Spencer said on Twitter in response to someone who asked if Scorpio might be released early. "Amazing progress and we are feeling good about schedule."

Microsoft's Project Scorpio was announced at E3 this year
Microsoft's Project Scorpio was announced at E3 this year

Spencer's comments about Project Scorpio follow on from what he told GameSpot earlier this month about the device and how development is shaping up. Things are going "really well," he told us, adding that Microsoft is in fact "a little ahead of plan" as it relates to the hardware timelines.

"There is a lot of time to go, but we feel good about how the things are coming together," he said. "The teams understand the performance spec that we're building. We went through some of the high-level specs at E3 in the video. And it gives the teams time to make sure that they're targeting that performance for their games. Luckily so many of both our internal teams and partners are also building on PC.

"So it's not hard for us to say, 'Okay this is the PC spec that you can expect with what we're building on Scorpio,' so it allows them to make sure they have the assets and capability to deliver. Since we're focusing on a box that can support true 4K and a 4K frame buffer and a lot of PC games already support that; it's not a new language or asset base for them in terms of things that we're asking them to go do. I'm also pretty confident in the content lineup that we'll see."

Project Scorpio is described by Microsoft as the "most powerful console ever made." Spencer, like others before him, have said the console is "premium" in nature, which suggests it won't be cheap. Since it's going to be more powerful than the Xbox One S, it will be priced accordingly, but the exact price point remains a mystery for now.

"We expect both of these products [Xbox One S and Project Scorpio] to be in market at the same time, and that there's a clear performance difference and obviously there will be a price difference between the two things," he said. "But I also want people to understand that Scorpio is going to be a premium console. Like, I'm not trying to sell you a high-end gaming PC rig for a couple of thousand dollars or something. We look at consumer price points of consoles and definitely our target is to hit that.

"But it will be a premium version of an Xbox One and we'll talk more about pricing as we're cutting it closer to the launch and everything else. But I'm confident that we'll be able to deliver a product at a price point that gamers will feel like is worth it."

Sony's new, more powerful console, the PS4 Pro, goes on sale in November, priced at $400.

I don't think 6tflops is going to support "true 4K"

Thing is, true 4k is great and all but even at 6 teraflops the games are likely still gonna run around 30fps or lower depending on the level of graphical fidelity.

I'm sure there'll be some 'secret sauce' and console optimization that'll help out but it'll still be an incremental upgrade. Owning a PC with a 6600k and a gtx 1080 I can assure you that even with that native 4k can be a touch and go affair for higher frame rates in certain games.

My son has an Alienware desktop, i7 with 2 x 980 gpus, even then it struggles to maintain 30-60 fps at 4K, so just like the PS4 pro the Scorpio will have some caveats

If they announce Oculus and or HTC capable VR with an nvidia like foveated rendering scheme to have decent VR at 6 teraflops I'm in for $600 or a VR Scorpio bundle for $900.

Go Microsoft! This is your chance. Don't blow it. MURCA! Lol

1. PSU has to be built in
2. It needs a removable internal HDD
3. FIX THE FRIGGING NOISY FAN! My Xbox one Fan made this clicking noise, I sent it back 2 times, got replacements, bought a new one from the store and they all made the same noise. I then bought an Xbox One S and even that does it, I thought maybe I'm crazy, but I went on hotdeals the other week when the Xbox One S was on sale and every single person was complaining about the fan there.

4. The UI needs to be smooth and make sense, right now it's so slow and laggy, things don't make sense like when you want to buy a game, you have to press a button that says "show price" and then the next window says "bundle only" which you have to press before it finally shows the price. Weird stuff like that and how it's so hard to find stuff on the store, how you cannot choose to turn off or put in rest mode as easy as the PS4, you have to keep going into settings and changing the modes... etc etc etc. The OS is a mess..

5. I want Keyboard and Mouse support and the promise finally of every Xbox One being a Dev Kit.
6. HD Audio, because for whatever reason Microsoft hate it.

If they deliver on that, I'll buy one.

@Terrorantula: if your fan is noisy you have a defective unit. Xbox one is whisper quiet.

The show price button is for 360 games, as all purchasing of them has to be done through the 360 backbone. Buy Xbox one games and this doesn't happen

You were never getting the full dev kit thing because of piracy. The abilities are limited because anyone needing more will have the resources to need a real dev kit while not opening up the system. Tonpiracy.

It's had HD Audio from day one. All HD audio formats are compressed PCM, it's simply doing internal decoding. They announced bitstreaming today.

If you have a system capable of tweaking things to a degree where you don't want internal decosing, then you aren't using a game system for playback.

@Terrorantula: as much as it's going to cost I hope they would allow an upgradable GPU for those of us that want to plug n play n pay

Looking forward to a better VR capable console. Sony impressed me with PSVR, but Scorpios projected tech is PC Master races yesterday tech.

Please allow us to upgrade HD and GPU. Game developers wouldn't take a huge hit. Pspro and regular ps are going to manage. Future proof yourself a bit Microsoft. Some of us will pay. Looking forward to my Microsoft return regardless

@jumalan75: why would they do that and this isn't a totally new system, but a mid life/cycle system... The X2 will be out 2-3yrs after the scorpio..

And please don't fragment console like you do pc.. with swappable GPU that's what you'll get.. how can a dev effectively develop for a "X" GPU when u might have a worse one, leave that headache to pc please..

I'm hoping MS will put some effort into bringing the 360 backwards compatible library to its Play Anywhere service. Scorpio will be a nice addition to the living room, bit it would be awesome to play a few older 360 games on the go with a Surface 3 or Surface 4.

@logicxx: yes another 100 to 150 over the cost of regular X-bone is 399,when they drop regular to 249 its 299 now for non slim, they allways try and make fancy statements like that but when their research figures out 399 is it, it might be 449 for 2 or 3 months with bad sales and then dropped to 399...lol

to all the people, worried about the price DONT BE, by Holiday 2017 the regular X-bone will be 249-299 im betting and Scorpio will be 399, it wont be higher then that MS&Sony BOTH learned their lesson people dont care if you put a pair of lips on it to give you a BJ, above 399 sales crash and burn

@leo5111: you seem to under estimate the enthusiast crowd... seeing as they are aiming this as a premium console and not a entirely new console, they can charge 499 for each or maybe 550-600 and that will let them turn a profit..

This isn't being aimed as the replacement to the oneS but a beefier oneS... In other words the turbo version.

There entirely new system which i think will come 2yrs after the Scorpio will be the reasonable price system..

MS is testing the market here to see if at least over 1mil gamers (my estimate) want such a product.. if they buy it you can expect this mid cycle upgrade to take off

@slypher9 apparently YOU paid no attention that was EXACTLY what Sony tried with the 60 gig ps3 and MS trying to bundle the Kinect with the X-bone to say both were failures is the biggest understatement this planet has ever seen, they both ran from their idea,s when they saw the sales, FASTER THEN A BULLET...EDIT...midcycle upgrade? when it comes out will be 4th year consoles generaly last 5 so its viewed more like a slightly early REPLACEMENT, despite what MS trys to call it, and 399 is like MAX for new console

Happy for what Xbox is doing. As a gamer, this has to be celebrated. I also look forward to the PS4 Pro and what it would offer gamers. This is all coming from a PC 'most of the time' gamer in me. If I can play some of the best exclusives on these two systems at a high quality visual fidelity and resolution, what's there to complain ? As a PC gamer, I am already used to high resolutions and fps, and I can't wait to see what this Scorpio can achieve. We will know more during E3 2017.

@analgrin: 2 years more likely, imho. We have 3 years between PS4 and PS4Pro... I don't expect they will dare reduce this refresh window even more. Especially that it would make sense if, with next PS, they drop obligatory support for original PS4. I think they will keep last 2 consoles in the loop, older hardware will be down to devs to choose if they want to support further, or not.

To put in back doors, I'm sure. if you think they have stopped your a fool. It all goes back to XP fdays when the fascist FED did a backroom deal (blackmail) with MS and dropped all the monopoly charges against them.

I'm sick and tired of the ponies saying there's no reason to buy an Xbox now just buy a PC. That's bullshit. I for one will never buy a PC for gaming when I can buy an Xbox or a playstation for that matter. I don't want to have to f..k around with drivers and graphics cards etc etc. I just want to buy the game slot it in and play the thing no hassles no f...ing around.

@gamerbum: Well, for those who already have strong PC...

For example, I have good i7 system that I also use for photo/video editing and other tasks. GPU is a bit outdated, (R9 280x) but for expected Scorpio's asking price, I should be able to get GTX1070 today, or better card if I want to wait closer to Scorpio's release date.

I don't expect that Scorpio's GPU will outdo GTX1070, and CPU will not be on i7 level. Nor will it have RAM and storage I have in PC already. So for me, upgrading PC makes more sense. And I already f*ck with drivers and updates, anyway... so it looks like I will stay with PS4 and PC this turn, and have exclusives from all 3 platforms available.

But for people who prefer to have, say, non-gaming laptop, Scorpio makes perfect sense if they wish for some quality gaming. Or even PS4Pro if they prefer Sony's platform, be it for preferences in exclusives or because of what their mates already have.

@gamerbum: The beauty of console gaming is knowing that games are guaranteed to work (outside of rare instances where a crappy developer releases a shady project like with 7dtd). You have no idea how many games I've bought on PC that wouldn't work for one reason or another, which then led to several hours of installing random drivers or messing with folders. Sometimes I still couldn't get the game to work and it's not like I have obscure or outdated components.

I just want to get home, sit down, and play a game. Consoles let me do that. With PC, it's a gamble.

@someoneelse: The only problem with AAA games is that they are soulless regurgitated shit with gameplay mechanics that even monkeys bitch about. And when is somebody going to teach a decent class on boss fight design in game design school. It shouldn't be a 20 min. lecture in QTE 101.

(Discaimer: Doom 2016 and Shadow Warrior 2 have excellent gameplay mechanics. Everyone else sucked wang this year).
