The PlayStation 4 has a "huge lead" over the Xbox One, according to Xbox boss Phil Spencer, an advantage that is so large right now that he's unsure if Microsoft's console can ever catch up.

No Caption Provided

Spencer's candid comments came during a panel at the 2015 GeekWire Summit. As reported by Videogamer, when Spencer was asked if he thought the Xbox One could outsell the PS4 this generation, he replied, "You know, I don't know. You know, the length of the generation... They [Sony] have a huge lead and they have a good product. I love the content, the games lineup that we have."

The Head of Xbox went on to say that the situation surrounding the Xbox One's launch, marked by dramatic policy reversals and controversial comments from executives who have since left the company, had a negative effect on the platform's ability to have a strong start. In fact, Spencer admitted that Microsoft "fundamentally lost... the trust of our most loyal customers" at this time.

"Whether it's always-on, used games, whatever the feature was, we lost the trust in them that they were at the center of our decision-making process," he said. "Were we building a product for us, or were we building a product for the gamers? And as soon as that question came into people's minds and they looked at anything, whether it was the power of our box, our launch lineup, microtransactions, any of the features that you talked about, what you find is very quickly you lose the benefit of the doubt. You lose your customer's assumption that the reason you're building your product is to delight them and not just build a better and more maybe manipulative product.

"I sit back and I think about an [organization] of thousands of people, you're down in the organization and some words and some actions from executives kinda just trash all the work that you've done over the last three years, many weekends and nights, and you start to question why am I doing this?" he added. "Why am I working so hard when a few crass comments can actually position our product more directly than any work that the team was doing?"

Spencer was promoted to Head of Xbox in March 2014 and at that time, he said "job number one" was to attempt to regain the confidence of the Xbox team by way of being "very forthright" with them. He says he's already seeing a change in the team for the better. Instead of a team "that's questioning the leadership of the organization," he now sees a team "that's motivated by the customers that we have and their ability to delight them."

Spencer added: "I see a team that's making amazing progress. [Backwards compatibility] was one. We didn't know back compat would work. We started it. A few ninja engineers went off and figured it out, how do you go from PowerPC to X86 and translate game code that's about as time-critical as any piece of code that you would want in terms of its performance, and they got it done. So I would never question the ability of our organization, but I'll say we're not motivated by beating Sony, we're motivated by gaining as many customers as we can."

A direct sales comparison between Xbox One and PS4 is tough to nail down. As of June 30, Sony had shipped 25.3 million PS4 consoles worldwide, while the only shipment number Microsoft has ever announced for the Xbox One was 10 million. That figure, however, came back in November 2014.

Its nice that he's actually be straightforward about the company and its products. You so often get inflated bullshit responses from executives that hearing something honest is refreshing.

I BOUGHT PS4 LAST NOVEMBER AND HAVE JUST BOUGHT X1 THIS SEPTEMBER. BOTH CONSOLES ARE GREAT I THINK. THE BEST GAME SERIES EVER OF ANY GENRE I THINK IS THE GOD OF WAR SERIES OF GAMES (6 ON PS3/GOD OF WAR 3 REDONE ON PS4). ANYBODY PLAYED GOW3 ON PS3 DON'T BOTHER WITH THE PS4 VERSION AS THERE IS HARDLY ANY GRAPHICAL DIFFERENCE WHICH SHOWS HOW MUCH OF THE PS3'S POWER THAT GAME UTILISED. THE UNCHARTED SERIES OF GAMES ARE ALSO AWESOME ON PLAYSTATION. THEN THE BEST SERIES OF GAMES FOR A SHOOTER ON ANY CONSOLE IS THE GEARS OF WAR SERIES WHICH I RATE ABOVE HALO SERIES. XBOX ALSO HAS THE BEST RACING SERIES IN THE FORZAS WHICH IS THE MAIN REASON I GOT AN X1 AS WELL AS FOR GEARS 4 AND HALO 5. ALSO QUANTUM BREAK, RECORE, CRACKDOWN 3 AND SCALEBOUND ARE LOOKING GOOD. EACH CONSOLE HAS IT'S GREAT EXCLUSIVES SO GET EM BOTH IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT. THEY'RE LOADS BETTER VALUE WHEN COMPARED TO PC'S (I.E POWER PER YOUR POUND SPENT). I WAS GOING TO GET CROSS PLATFORM GAMES ON PS4 AS I PREFER IT'S MENU SYSTEM AND IT SEEMS TO INSTALL GAMES FROM DISC QUICKER THAN X1 BUT I'LL NOW BE BUYING THEM ON X1 INSTEAD AS I LIKE THE SLIGHTLY SLIMMER CASES BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY HAVE LOADS MORE SPACE AS I BOUGHT A SEAGATE 2TB EXTERNAL DRIVE BUT THERE AREN'T ANY ON PS4 WHICH IS A SHAME. 500GB OR 1TB ISN'T ENOUGH SPACE WITH THE INCREASING SIZE OF GAMES NOW SO COME ON SONY GET AN OFFICIAL EXTERNAL DRIVE MADE.

No shame in being 2nd. Let's be honest, the ps4 is selling like hotcakes because of 'muh 1080' COD' and everyone in europe buys fifa for playstation every year since it's inception.

I have an xbox one, and love it. Just keep pumping out those exclusives. We already have some this fall, and some next year, hopefully even more. Plus the little things are nice, like the preview program, try out things, suggest things

The xbox 360 lost so much steam at the end of it's cycle, because it didn't have any exclusives, and all that was pushed was stupid kinect games.

It's good to know we have a person in charge who knows what the gamer wants

I got to give Phil some credit on this one. He was honest. Not just about PS4 outselling Come, but also why. If Microsoft had him leading the march from jump st., the One would've been much farther along. It sucks because he's got a big mess to clean up and I can tell that he's trying..but where Phil falls short is his decision NOT to lock in more third party support and exclusive deals. He's actually against it..(unlike Phil Harrison) and that's what's killing Nintendo right now

Microsoft are getting it now I think. They had a product that made sense in North America's upper-middle class households but one that made no sense at all in the UK unless you earned footballer money (most living rooms in the UK are smaller than the living rooms in US trailer parks for example.) UK consumers struggled getting enough space to swing a Wii. As a media centre it was going to struggle since the majority of UK consumers use very different setups. TV and film is swinging the xBones way now, but it is very slow here and the competition knows to get the BBC onside first.

They've let consumers ditch kinect (though I notice not really made the dashboard cope any better without it) and the price point is about right and those were big things for MS to do. Backwards compatibility will feel like a big risk to them on top of all that but sales will shoot up if they get it working and well publicised for Christmas 2015.

Good article in illustrating just how hard MS are working to get things right without losing their original vision entirely. Hope they don't put too much faith in Halo. A new IP is going to be what brings the cool kids in. The oldies just whine about changes. (I include myself in that one.)

clearly ms is full of lies, u said cross chat between 360 and bone could not be done, im guessing the same "ninja engineers" figured out how to do that too PLEASE SPARE US. Kinect couldnt be removed, but that got thrown out the window, and a long list of other back peddling has been done over the last 2 years. thanks for stalling the industry for 2 years and more by seeing what you could get away with and starting so broken that update and patch and the illusion of progression would be amazing, all this should of been done out of the box 2 years ago, i can only imagine where we would be now if you built on the back of the 360 instead of a broken console and giving us promises and hope and hype that each update will unlock potential etc and living in the future LOL

you wanna get back in the race, ger rid of all dlc or leave it on the physical disc sparing us a massive download and get rid of microtransactions and watch how everyone will sit up and listen, until then keep choking of your poor sales and continue not pushing the competition.

@hotwog21: Yeah I remember that line of bullshit. That the xbox 1 could not work without the kinect, LOL.

marketing director Harvey Eagle has said that the console will not function without Kinect connected. "Kinect does require to be connected to Xbox One in all cases, yes," he said.

It was months before they stopped towing that line. Mattrick is also largely credited for his work in bringing Kinect for Xbox 360 to life. Mattrick unveiled Kinect under the code-name of “Project Natal” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Mattrick

He pushed the thing on consumers, relentlessly. We will not ever sale a system without it, It is an integral part of the system. etc etc. It was clearly lying to the public. You know only a video game console would a corporation out right lie about an expensive consumer electronic device without risk of liability. You would never see that with a refrigerator, or an oven. "Your refrigerator will not work unless the kinect is always attached and online."

Nothing wrong with the kinect- I have enjoyed it. but before you bring an expensive peripheral to a console, make sure you have a killer app to use it with. MS should have had some really good games out for the kinect, well before asking consumer to pay for it. The whole motion control era of video games (wii, ps move, kinect) during the 7th gen was such a passing fad that never caught on nor was it ever used appropriately by developers for hardcore gamers to really enhance gaming. A Children toy.

Microsoft and XB! should have known when sony/Nint didn'y use it during the 8th gen, that it was simply A 7th gen fad that needed to have stayed in the 7th gen of gaming.

I purchased the Xbox One on day one. Loved it and enjoying it today. I purchase the PS4 probably a month or so after they launched. Been enjoying some, I said, some of the exclusives. I would say MLB The Show is the most played.

With that said, I enjoy my Xbox One way more than my PS4. For me, has the better UI and game library. Don't get me wrong, the PS4 have a few good games, but not enough to pull me away from the Xbox One.

I actually have to force myself to play the PS4 just so I wont think it's a waste of money.

@kujel: The most gamer centric platform is the one with games. The wii u has to few games by its own first party developers and does not embrace games from third party developers. Stronger physics, online gaming, smarter AI, more in depth stories - all of these are presented better on other games that are not on the wii. Pressing a button to go from platform a to platform b, does not make a more gamer centered console.

Consumer choice for gaming consumers is the most centric option you can give a person who loves this hobby we call gaming. The PC is of course is the number one option. And consoles that try to bring as many games with variety and choice. I love nintendo but they are closing themselves off to the world, with less and less variety, options, and games to choose from.

It doesn't matter how much PS4 is selling if you are an Xbox One owner, it only matters the Xbox One is doing well and it has plenty of third party support. The Xbox started slowly but mow it's doing alright, the Exclusives are what really matters and here the situation seem to be very similar to last gen. My fav games on PS3 were Uncharted and the Last of Us and I don't see any new great exclusives to rush buying a PS4 as yet. In the end is what games you prefer., it really doesn't matter who is selling the most.

@Depresso: Absolutely true, always choose the games not the console. Though install base does greatly affect what the developers and publishers decide. I do wish the number of consoles on each side were closer, such a large gap needs to be closed.

The fact is Microsoft under Balmer was a horrible mistake, They over engineered the ONE and added an in house SPY "the Kinect" that tracked everything, invading the privacy of all of their customers; and then they had the gall to charged a ridiculous price for being spied on.

When in reality all the fans of the Xbox wanted was a powerful gaming system to enjoy, another mistake was not building in backward compatibility for the investment those customers had already shelled out for in the cost of all the X360 games that were no longer valid; and useless on the ONE.

@vsaiz: Actually it was Mattrick who helped bring the kinect to xbox 360 and kept pushing it on the xbox one long after the fad of motion controlled stayed back in the 7th gen of gaming. Balmer the ceo past gates, was more focused on the 'enviroment' of products for corporations. The new catch phrase of maximizing profits by connecting every part of business to each other like spokes of a wheel. win 8, xbox, zune. win phones, office, business would all know the individual customers and everything about them no matter what product they were using related to windows.

balmer and mattrick are great ceos with laser like focus, and implement the plan no matter the obstacle, which can be very valuable in a businessman. Problem is they are not the types to course correct, and with everyone, in every industry yelling, " Iceburg ahead" They were not the types to go around and the only thing they knew, was to go full steam ahead.

Profits at all costs can make a company blind, and less able to manuever. When win8 beta was getting negative reviews by heavy users and journalists - they pushed that product anyways. Long before the xbox one was shown at E3, gaming industry veterans, journalists, heat seekers, and of course gamers themselves were waving their arms and screaming, "NO!" Mattrick and balmer a funny pair indeed.

Really wouldn't worry about it. As I've said before for 2 years, anyone "betrayed" by the things MS didn't actually do - never did - is pathetic, and wasn't going to buy the console in the first place. MS never lost the trust of gamers.

@ughz: Well lets not kid our selves, if the xbox one was say, selling 25+ million to sonys possible 15million - they would bring those policies back in a heart beat. Including the kinect and $500 price. Those were not policies for consumers because MS corp loves us, they were for maximizing profits no matter the costs or damage to the consumer.

Those policies were still active after e3 of 2013, still active after industry and consumer backlash. It was not till Amazons preorders for the consoles showed the xb1 behind 4 to 1 before Mattrick decided to course correct. If MS and XB1 could have gotten their 'message' across to consumers - they would have happily launched the xb1 with the policies in place.

Microsoft went into the 8th gen of gaming with more consumer good will and momentum for a console brand then I have seen since the NES. All of it squandered away by poor decision making and bad policies -THAT had to finally be reversed, not something that was, "oh, never mind that was just some options we were mulling over".

It is nothing to do with the trust of gamers, betrayed bullshit - it was just simply not a good value for an expensive consumer electronic that people use for gaming. Microsoft is trying to change their potential customers minds by fixing what is wrong, not the other way around. But I can tell you one thing, future 9th gen console consumers, will be watching very closely for Micrsoft's xbox two's next set of policies they never intended to do.
