Xbox One Exclusive Sunset Overdrive Could Be Coming To PC

Sunset Overdrive is coming to PC (maybe).

Sunset Overdrive, the over-the-top third-person shooter for Xbox One made by the developer of the PS4 exclusive Spider-Man, looks like it is finally releasing on PC. A rating for a PC edition of the game recently popped up in the ESRB database, while a listing has also appeared in Steam's database (but is not yet visible on the site's public-facing pages). Back in May, Korea's ratings board posted a rating for a PC edition, according to Gematsu.

All of this evidence seems to suggest that it's only a matter of time before an official announcement is made about Sunset Overdrive for PC. In September 2014, just a month before Sunset Overdrive launched for Xbox One, Insomniac said it had no plans to bring the game to PC, but teased that it hadn't ruled it out, either.

Now Playing: Sunset Overdrive Video Review

Two years later, Insomniac said it really wanted to bring Sunset Overdrive to PC, but noted that it was publisher Microsoft's decision to make. Part of the reason why Insomniac decided to make it an Xbox One-exclusive in the first place was because Microsoft reportedly allowed the studio to own the rights to the Sunset Overdrive franchise. It appears even despite that, Microsoft gets to call the shots on whether or not Sunset Overdrive is released on PC.

Insomniac has said it would like to make Sunset Overdrive 2, but at least as of October 2017, the studio had not found a partner for it.

Insomniac's latest game was the PS4 exclusive Spider-Man, which it developed in partnership with Sony and Marvel. The game sold really well and was generally adored by critics. The studio is currently working on the AR game Seedling for Magic Leap and a VR game called Stormland.

If Microsoft is to announce Sunset Overdrive for PC, one possible venue is the company's upcoming X018 event in Mexico City. The event takes place on November 10, so keep checking back with GameSpot for more.

Sunset Overdrive is wacky and wonderful, and you can currently get it pretty cheap on Xbox One. Alternatively, it's free with Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One.

That's good. Game should have been given more success. Not as good as R&C, but still a good game.

This way more people will play it, and that is always a good thing.

The game is hard to get into at first (at least to me), but once you get into it, it turns out to be a really good game. It was one of those 'eh, I don't like it enough to finish it' kind of games for a couple of years until I decided to just get through it, and I really enjoyed it. I'd perhaps pop it back in the system if they enhanced it on the X. A sequel would be nice.

The first game was great, honestly one of my favorite exclusive titles to date. It mainly suffered from being a year one title for the Xbox. Not enough people had the system and it wasn't available at launch to guarantee everyone would buy a copy.

interesting how insomniac would like to make a sequel but cannot find a publisher who is interested... clearly the first game bombed and microsoft wants nothing to do with it. considering the success of spiderman, it would be wise for sony to do insomniac a favour and publish the sequel.

@Xristophoros: well, publishers want to own ip due to if the ip became succesful and Insomniac partnered with someone else, the original publisher will lose its potential profit

@Xristophoros: Sony will for the most part only publish AAA titles if they can own the IP. (Spider-Man being the only major exception.) This was the reason Insomniac Games went to MS in the first place, Sony basically gave no support to the Resistance franchise and tanked it to never be heard from again.

@mcnichoj: i know, but maybe sony will make an exception now that they have proven themselves again with ratchet and clank and spiderman... they have been great partners for close to 20 years now... can't sony cut them a break once in a while?

Hope this is announced for the PC at XO18 along with the announcement that Sunset Overdrive 2 is coming to both platforms as a cross buy and play title. It would also be cool to see SSOD 2 join the battle royale craze or have some other MP battle modes as with the crazy weapons and movement of this game I could see this being loads of fun if it was players vs players.

@droogiecylon: They can do so many cool things with SO. It was originally announced as an MMO shooter IIRC. They opted to go a different direction and while the campaign was both fun and funny, the multiplayer portion was so shallow.

Duh. Called it when the game first came out. It was actually kind of unfair to judge the game purely on its sales figures because so many factors were working against it at the time. Seems reasonable to give the game another chance on another platform especially since a PC release of a AAA title is a pretty low risk way to recoup some lost cost.

Not surprised to see MS still has control of where the game releases either despite what Insomniac said. They have also said the game is very much an Xbox exclusive and it isn't going anywhere. The PC release will probably include a Game Pass version.

@Barighm: MS has a say over what happens to the first game because that was the deal for them to publish it. Insomniac Games can make whatever sequels, spin-offs or other media and do whatever they want with it but MS has the rights to where the first game they published goes. MS has made similar deals with games like Titanfall 1 and Deadrisng 3. Both of which are platform exclusive (meaning they only appear on Xbox video game consoles, any non dedicated gaming device like PC is fine). Another game they did it with was the first Mass Effect, it would later go to the PS3 but presumably EA had to pay MS a lump sum or MS gets residuals of the PS3 versions sales. (No one has ever publicly revealed the deal over that game, so we can just theorize.)

MS isn't the only ones to do it either, we have seen Nintendo recently do it with Bayonetta 2/3 and Sony has Japan platform exclusive rights to Monster Hunter World which means if they ever wanted to port MHW to the Switch they would either have to skip Japan or get permission from Sony which would probably entail them being paid like the Mass Effect situation above.

@Barighm: This could also be a case of Microsoft buttering them up to make a sequel. I think this was one of the main sticking points when it came to sequel discussions plus Insomniac has the man power to work on multiple projects at once. I think Spider Man 2 is a given but this may hint at another sunset overdrive too.
