Xbox One and Xbox 360 sell the most software overall in January, but EA is "PS4's #1 publisher"

According to an NPD report released today, game sales revenue was down 25% year-on-year in January. However this was primarily due to fewer games released over the month.

The NPD wrote, “There were about half the number of SKUs launched this January versus January 2013, leading to a 52 percent decrease in sales for new launches (or 39 percent when normalized for the 5-week January 2013). DMC: Devil May Cry and Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch were particularly strong launches in January 2013, causing a poor comparison for launches in January 2014.”

The top-selling games for January in the US (including CE, GOTY, and non-hardware bundles) were:

1. Call Of Duty: Ghosts (360, PS3, XBO, PS4, NWU, PC)
2. NBA 2K14 (PS4, 360, XBO, PS3, PC)
3. Battlefield 4 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3, PC)
4. Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (360, PS4, XBO, PS3, NWU, PC)
5. Grand Theft Auto V (360, PS3)
6. Madden NFL 25 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)
7. Minecraft (360)
8. FIFA 14 (PS4, XBO, PS3, 360, PSV)
9. Lego Marvel Super Heroes (360, XBO, PS3, PS4, 3DS, NWU, PSV, PC)
10. Tomb Raider 2013 (PS4, XBO, 360, PS3)

Peter Moore also wrote in a tweet (responding to the PS4's successful sales numbers), "Number one publisher on the PS4 is an awful position to be in..." And journalist Geoff Keighley was told a Sony representative that, "Tomb Raider on PS4 outsold the Xbox One version 2:1"

But for overall software sold, Microsoft is the winner. In a press release, Microsoft wrote that the Xbox One and Xbox 360 "sold the most games across all console platforms in January with 2.27 million units sold, making up 47 percent of software market share."

Also according to Microsoft, the Xbox One currently has a 2.7 attach rate (meaning that there are 2.7 Xbox One games sold per Xbox owner).

But the surprising news still comes from overall hardware numbers, where the PS4 surpassed not only Nintendo's dominating handheld, but also the Xbox One.
