Xbox Is Now The First "Carbon Aware" Console With February Update

The big February Xbox update is out now.

A big new Xbox firmware update is out now, and the big ticket feature is the highly touted "carbon aware" power management changes.

As announced previously, this new update makes every Xbox console default to the energy-saving option as part of Microsoft's push to reduce its carbon footprint overall. This will reduce console power consumption when the console is off. This won't affect performance or how updates can install overnight. However, the ability to remotely wake your console in the energy-saving option is not supported. Consoles in energy-saving mode boot more slowly, too.

All of this is optional. Players can go into the settings and opt for "Instant On" option to boot their console faster, though this uses 20X more energy, according to Microsoft.

With this new update, Xbox will become the first console to be "carbon aware" for game downloads and updates. "When your console is plugged in, connected to the internet and regional carbon intensity data is available, Xbox will schedule game, app, and OS updates for your console at specific times during the nightly maintenance window that may result in lower carbon emissions because a higher proportion of electricity is coming from lower-carbon sources on the electric grid," Microsoft said. "This decreases fossil fuel dependency and CO2 emissions and could potentially save you money."

Microsoft said for every two Xbox consoles that switch to the energy-saving mode for one year, this will save "the equivalent of carbon removed by one tree planted and grown for a decade."

Outside of the power-consumption changes, the February Xbox update allows players to hide game art when choosing tiles on the Home page. Game art is distracting to some, and this update makes it so the background always remains a solid color of your choosing. This can be adjusted by going to Settings > General > Personalization > My background > Solid color and game art.

You can now choose a solid color background instead of game art for the Home screen tiles
You can now choose a solid color background instead of game art for the Home screen tiles

Additionally, Microsoft has partnered with Google to allow Xbox owners to use the Google Home app as a remote for their Xbox. Using the app, players can power on and off their Xbox, navigate the menus, change the volume, and record game clips.

Finally, the February Xbox update includes a new feature that lets players jump back into previous parties more easily. Players can click on "Party," where they will see a list of previous parties--from there, they can restart one or create a new party. This feature remains in the testing phase and is being delivered to a random subset of users right now, Microsoft said.

In other news, the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch saw sales numbers grow in January 2023, but Xbox slumped.

An Xbox Series X uses 13 Watts in sleep mode while a PS5 uses 1.3 watts with all features enabled. If you are that environmentally conscious you should sell your Xbox and buy a PS5.

FYI Those that cover your Xbox so it’s little more dust free, that when you leave the Xbox on for instant on you risk the heat of the Xbox even if it’s off! I’ve noticed heat coming out of the Xbox when it is in this non- saving energy mode! I have mine off the instant on because of this. Yes, I cover mine!

Gonna be honest, I think most people could not care less about this because there’s already tons of tech that is “carbon aware”, and this isn’t going to be a selling point for the future of Xbox. People just want games. Granted, I already own a PC, so I don’t really turn on my Xbox for anything anymore, but yeah, this isn’t what’s going to help Xbox against the competition.

Slowly? Mine takes less than 10 seconds to boot.

Only a matter of time before someone invents "carbon awareness month".

I mean, seriously, i am all for less co2. In Sweden where i live we do not have coal power plants no more. We only use one oil power plant for elextricity sometimes in the winter during shortages as a back up. The debate here is more "wind power versus nuclear power". (i am "team wind power")

But seriously though guys.. a video game console using less carbon generated electricity is hardly the answer. It is a very small solution to a huge problem. What you americans need is what we have in the nordic countries now. More carbon free fossil free electric energy.

And subsidized electric vehicles too.

Xbox Series S/X is just symbolic. Goodwill for microsoft who gets to improve their brand, just like most companies want as long as it does not cost anything. It does not solve anything in the grand scheme of things.

And you should try to get more unions going because it is nice. Microsoft should get questions about salaries and how they treat their employees. Gender stuff and environmental issues are perfect things for them to use as distractions, they move the discussion to another topic entirely. It is probably a well planned strategy from them.

@simonthekid7: its a huge effect. original nes used like 5 w when playing, xsx uses 150 w. now consider 20 million playing the console, 10 million of them daily. its huge excess.

"this is pointless next to 99% of activities happening in world" is so dumb argument and if everyone followed it we wouldnt do or have anything.

Now they need to get Bill Gates to give up his private jet usage.

I've already disabled this setting; my console powers on instantly.

I already use the energy saving mode though I noticed Microsoft did the same for Windows 11 as well.

I can't understand how MS has all that money and they have Harvey Smith working on f****ng redfall. No Prey 2, no spiritual successor to (o.g.) Deus Ex.

MS only know how to mismanaged IP; look what they did to Halo without Bungie baby-sitting the franchise: they ran it to the ground. That's why I hated the Bethesda move: so many classic IP in the hands of these rich idiots that don't know what to do with them. The effects won't be noticed for years to come but when we do notice it will be too late, 343 studios all over again. At least #freeArkane

The same way they have Perfect Dark, Conker, Banjo and a tons of other top notch IP, and do nothing with it. They're clueless.

In oter words, there is no reason to get the Xbox. A ps5, which has its exclusives AND your 95%, is a much better deal. Got it.

@hardwenzen: Frankly, at this point, if Playstation keeps moving towards service gaming like Ryan wants, you're better off just getting a PC and a Switch. Or just a Steam deck.

I have a pc, so there is nothing to move to. If Ryan goes full live service, and the live service is on par with the garbage that's currently available from the third party devs, then i will simply sell the ps5 and call it a day, so i ain't worried a bit. But Sony is not 343i, they ain't stupid. Having some live service titles doesn't mean they're going all in on live service titles.

@hardwenzen: They have something like 13 live service titles on deck, and that's so many it covers most of their first party studios. Ryan has also stated outright live service is his focus going forward. They're even removing the disc drive from all future PS5s .

I dunno man. It sure sounds like they're going full bore on live service gaming.

Its not 343i, its not happening. And its 5 live service titles last i heard, not 13.

@hardwenzen: Except that's not what you said, you said "no games whatsoever". Apparently, what you actually meant, (but didn't seem to be able to articulate), was "it's a MS vs. Sony" thing.

Got it.

A game that's available on another system, doesn't make the X worthwhile.🤗No wonder we just got a bunch of articles on poor sales, and the growth is dropping. Gamers are seeing the partern, and the patern is that Phil gives you an illusion of what's to come, and when its time to release em, nothing comes out.

@hardwenzen: To be fair. I think Phil is being honest about the things he says, it's just MS then does whatever the hell they want, like they have always done, while Uncle Phil continues to fulfill his role as PR guy and trustworthy smiling face. If Phil didn't have a reputation of being a nice guy, I bet MS would have dismissed him years ago (which they sort of did; what some people don't realize is a promotion to a higher executive position can actually make it easier to control someone, thus limiting their actual power over a division while still giving the impression they're the boss of said division when in actuality their power has now been reduced by the sheer nature of executive voting practices).

@milhouse91: That and the incinerators that are being built all around the west right now. Everyone has stopped taking our “recycled” goods, so it all gets burnt now lol. No mention of that however and I know cause one just got built besides me and they’re constantly bringing it in and it’s burning everyday. All CO2 is really is a new way to tax the poor, keep the rich rich and keep the poor poor. The sad thing is the middle classes bought into it and they’re the main voting power.

Initially, it sounds great, but the fact that people can just opt out of it changes things. At the same time though, if MS made it mandatory, that would just blow up in their faces, (I can already see exactly how that would go).

Personally, I already use the energy-saving mode, and I'll always land on the side of "options are good" and "every little bit helps", but this isn't as big of an impact as it might seem on it's face, (or as much as I wish it was).
