Wii checks into the YMCA

Nintendo donates 100 party packs of consoles and games to the community centres.

A few days ago it was announced that Nintendo Wiis would be available to play on Norwegian Cruise Line ships, and now Nintendo also intends to hang out with all the boys at YMCA chapters across the US.

The Village People are probably also interested in getting their hands on some Wiis.
The Village People are probably also interested in getting their hands on some Wiis.

Nintendo has donated 100 sets of the hard-to-find console along with copies of Wii Sports to the centres, which were immortalised in the Village People song released in 1978.

Many of the hostel's chapters will be setting up the systems for the upcoming Healthy Kids Day on April 14, with some offering events like Wii Sports tournaments and raffles to win the consoles and other prizes.

Nintendo America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications, George Harrison, commented, "Consumers all over America are telling us the Wii helps them to stay active and fit and also gives them another reason to be together as a family."

Dang, looks like you called the Village People joke before any of the commenters did. I can just imagine a Wiimote dancing game like that now, lawl.

unless youre a bitter troll... you gotta love a company that would do this. its good marketing.. good PR... ill admit i dont really buy the whole wii as a work out deal. but nintendo is really making good on their expanding gaming to all ages mission. grandparents and children go to the Y... so do adults with no children.. it gives everyone a chance to play

@Kavidias1981: I don't think I spelled your name right...but...using your logic... Nah, Swinging at the air is fun for a year at best... That's why, when the whole Wii thing fades: 360 and PS3 will last on. *And I don't respect 360.*

@theKSMM : I don't think Nintendo has kept their supply low on purpose, I think the demand is just too high to fill.

Good for Ninty, bad for YMCA managers that are going to find their precious Wii's have been ganked. The demand is just still too high guys.

Nintedo is playing their cards perfectly with the Wii. They've kept the supply low and the demand high. And they dangle the fruit out on a stick just long enough to get people to chase it. They're gaining tremendous mainstream exposure, and that's where they're sales will come from.

I can dig the Village People reference in the picture and caption, but in the article body itself?. . . Well, at least now it's even more fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A. . .

Everyone dance with me! Young man, there's no need to feel down. I said, young man, pick yourself off the ground. I said, young man, 'cause you're in a new town There's no need to be unhappy. Young man, there's a place you can go. I said, young man, when you're short on your dough. You can stay there, and I'm sure you will find Many ways to have a good time. It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-a. It's fun to stay at the y-m-c-aaa...

Just another reason as to why I love Nintendo. People can say what they want to oppose my comment but they can't deny that Nintendo are pro health, pro fun and pro family. Not like people with their 360's and PS3's cooped up alone in their bedrooms gaffawing to themselves.

this is fanastic... instead of fat kids getting exercise to help them get more healthy, they'd play Wii and imagine getting healthy. maybe Wii should donate "trauma center" to school so people who master it can become doctors?? whouldn't that be great? *during surgery* "Scalpel" "sucking cup" "Wiimote" "blood-bucket" "priest"

Why's everyone here hating on Nintendo? You gotta admit that this is a great way to expose more and more people to the Wii, especially with its "gaming for everyone, not just the hardcore" marketing strategy. It's great from a commercial point of view, and it means more free video games in the world for us. This is win/win!

The YMCAs are non for profit organisations, therefore, giving them systems where people will be able to play with them, having fun while moving is not a bad idea.

My cousin, and his gilfriend played mine Easter, b/c I brought it in the living room, since I promised his girlfriend I would the prior Sunday so she could try it. They both loved it. His girlfriend owned me in Wii bowling, but since I'm the resident Game Master in my family, my cousin didn't set right w/ that. They didn't fight, or anything, but my cousin wanted me to beat her, so he encouraged me to try, and beat her. I got owned twice, correction-thrice! I didn't mind getting beat, but everyone thinks I do.*laughs* I really don't care. Point is, they both loved it, and want one too.

@slayer1090: You sir... I can't act mean here, your last comment was all too funny! Matching up kiddie game for kiddie game. And then offering Wii's not so kiddie game *Resident Evil* Smart move. How easy gamers forget the GOOD half of a gaming console...

Nintendo is developing a great marketing campaign. They are getting video game systems in the hand of just about everyone, as they had said. The donation of 100 systems will spark much more sells once this market develops. In other words, certain active individuals who do not like video games for whatever reason will see that the Wii is different, and they will be more likely to buy it for themselves and for their kids. This will even jump the software and peripheral sales. Congratulations to Nintendo, they are marketing their system very well
