What Is The Environmental Impact Of The Gaming Industry? One Researcher Wants To Find Out

The research undertaken by an Australian researcher aims to inform future research and policy decisions.

A researcher in Australia want to know: What is the environmental impact of the video game industry, and what do game developers themselves think about their carbon footprint?

Researcher Dr. Ben Abraham from the University of Technology in Sydney (UTS) is calling on game developers to weigh in as part of a new research project that aims to "create a snapshot of the energy intensity of contemporary video game development in the workplace where games are actually made."

To do this, Abraham is looking for first-hand information from game development studios regarding their carbon emissions policies and practices.

In addition to that kind of numerical data, the study is looking for respondents to speak about the "attitudes of game developers towards the potential environmental impacts of their work." The survey is asking for developers to discuss their level of interest and concern about climate change and carbon emissions that are created by the game development industry.

"This research is being conducted to find out about the energy use and associated carbon emissions of digital game production both in individual workplaces and across the sector as a whole," reads a line from the survey. "The research aims to find out what game developers are doing to reduce their carbon footprint in order to inform future research and policy decisions that aim to support sustainable game development practices."

Abraham is looking to collect information about the energy usage of a game studio, what workplace policies might be in place regarding carbon emissions, and policies about other environmental issues such as recycling and powering off computers at night.

Abraham said developers can take part in the survey without identifying themselves or their employer if that is of concern, though he added it may not always be possible to protect the identity of participants.

In 2019, the United Nations announced an initiative called "Playing for the Planet," which saw gaming giants like Microsoft, Sony, Ubisoft, and Niantic announce plans to work together to come up with best practices for reducing the environmental impact of the video game industry. Nintendo is missing from the alliance but the company already operate an Environment Committee at the company's headquarters in Japan, while each of its overseas subsidiaries have their own committees that look into environmental impact in their regions.

Microsoft is producing 825,000 carbon-neutral Xbox game consoles as part of a pilot program that represents the first gaming consoles in history to bear that designation. As for Sony, the company has said the PlayStation 5 will be more environmentally friendly.

In total, the efforts undertaken by the 21 game companies is estimated to result in a "30 million ton reduction of CO2 emissions by 2030." Additionally, "millions" of trees will be planted, while game companies will enact practices to do better in the areas of "energy management, packaging, and device recycling."

Man, there's really way too many researchers out there with nothing meaningful to do research on. If only more of them spent their time trying to come up with actually useful things to research. But yeah, climate change hysteria is all over the news, so it's probably easy to secure funding for an idea like this than it would be for something truly meaningful.

Gamers can only be doing the environment good since they spend their entire lives indoors.

The impact from the entire gaming industry on the environment? It's freaking huge. The manufacturing of consoles alone produces tons of CO2 emissions along with left over heavy metals that are really toxic. Then there is the pollution generated from the use of the consoles and energy required to run the servers and their manufacturing. Not to mention that so many people just throw them in the garbage when they break instead of E-cycling them which leads to runoff of the heavy metals back into the ground water. Capturing the full impact will be a difficult job, one that will lead to an answer that most people are to weak to except.

It’s funny how for a long time people have advised to not speak openly about politics or religion. It seems in todays age climate change is right up there with the other 2 in terms of the kind of polarizing opinions that it can generate.

I imagine the comments section will be full of very well thought out and researched positions for both the pros and cons of climate change. In addition, the conversations will no doubt be civil.

The most damaging thing to the environment is the meat industry. Let's take care of that first. I'd give up cheeseburgers before gaming.

@srfilk86: And people actually believe this kind of stuff. Zero evidence behind any such claims but as long as no one bothers to look into it no one will find out. And anyone who does you can just call a conspiracy theorists or anything similar.

Yeah, keep eating your meat replacement burgers. They're so much better for the environment. And for you especially.

@Atzenkiller: They are, actually. No waste product from cattle, less chance of parasites, and more protein in vegan food.

@srfilk86: More protein in plants. Right. What planet do you live on where they have plants like that?

Waste products from cattle. Yeah, that made me laugh. You mean the stuff they use as fertilizer to grow your crops? Oh yeah, we sure are better off without that. Instead we've got all those chemicals that poison our environment and kill all the small animals that live in and around the crp fields. Man, thank god we no longer have to rely on the cycle of nature that has existed for millions of years and has kept all creatures on this planet perfectly healthy. Thank god we've got chemicals for everything now.

Also do you eat your meat raw? Cause there's literally no way you could normally get any parasites from eating cooked meat bought in stores. Or maybe there is on your planet since it probably has different rules than we have here on Earth. But in countries like Germany we have very strict rules for how meat has to be handled. Which we don't have at all for plant foods, so you get to enjoy all those pesticides in your plant foods without having to pay extra for them. Lucky you.

@Atzenkiller:

1. It's a fact you get more protein from legumes than meat.

2. Use of manure for fertilizer is far less harmful for the environment as there would be less animals and less carcasses.

3. You can cook meat and still get parasites. Most people don't cook their meat thoroughly and often prefer it to be a bit under done.

@srfilk86: Switch out what you're eating. I'm having bison tonight. Better than beef, healtier, 15% of the carbon footprint pound for pound, and still meat. Win.

@srfilk86: Oil, Gas and fossil fuels are the main factor. There isn't a big push to all electric replacements though as governments get loads of tax off of it.

@gamingdevil800: Wrong. The waste from cattle alone is one of the leading causes of climate change.

@gamingdevil800: And electric cars are not a viable solution anyway. They never will be simply because any proper solutions would requires huge changes to all infrastructure, so it's not gonna happen. Maybe in China where they're still building new metropoles from the ground up but even there you'd be restricted to any cities that were specifically built for electric cars.

Hydrogen driven fuel cells are the only real solution and for some reason it gets completley ignored while electric car are still getting pushed from all sides to this day. Hydrogen is easy to produce and any gas station can get their own machines for producing it, which would basically eliminate the oil industry and all its monopoly over night. It's also perfectly clean and highly efficient and refueling a car shouldn't take any longer than it does now. While even in an idealistic scenario where you could reach a battery in let's say 5 mins, imagine the huge amount of cars that would pile up around any gas station if people had to charge their cars there for "only" 5 mins. Which is why they've come up with ideas like making batteries that you could just switch out at a gas station, but those kind of solutions are obviously not viable at all.

The only way I see how electric cars could work is if you put wireless charging technology into all streets so that all cars would get charged while driving. But like I said, a solution like this might only work in China and only if they decided to design a metropolis from the ground up with the goal of only electric cars being allowed there.

Climate change policy is made to control us, not the climate. Fusion energy sure does not interest them huh... maybe because with it their plan is dead? The green energy carbon tax is a lie for the elites to get rich and society to get poor. Same reason why they try to flood EU NA with migrants. All a plan to create the NWO.

@KillzoneSnake: I think you you might need to put your tinfoil hat back on, get back on the meds, and go back to school my friend. Seriously though, mental illness is a problem though. Also, just fyi, if you truly care about inequality and want to do something about it, the party that's fighting to help stop it is probably the one you don't like, just sayin'.
