What is a Teraflop And What Does It Mean For The Xbox's Project Scorpio

GameSpot may receive revenue from affiliate and advertising partnerships for sharing this content and from purchases through links.

How teraflops relate to Microsoft’s newly announced Project Scorpio console

By now, you might have heard that Microsoft’s newly announced Project Scorpio console has six teraflops (which is a whole lot more teraflops than the Xbox One’s 1.31 equivalent). But what is a teraflop? Simply defined, a teraflop is a unit of computing that represents a trillion floating-point operations per second.

Still don’t get it? Well, in simpler terms, the number of teraflops a system has can give developers a general idea of how much computing power they have to play with. The more teraflops you have, the more floating-point operations you can perform per second. With more teraflops, you can create larger, more complex virtual universes.

Having more teraflops, however, does not necessarily equate to faster performance. It’s analogous to a car’s mile-per-gallon rating, for instance. Just because a car has a 20MPG rating does not necessarily mean it will run fast. Project Scorpio’s six teraflops puts in it in the same range as Nvidia’s recently released GeForce GTX 1070 graphics card (which is a 6.5 teraflop $380 GPU). Just because Project Scorpio features a relatively close number of teraflops won’t mean it will perform on par with the GTX 1070. For instance, the GTX Titan X features seven teraflops, but performs worse than the GTX 1070 in most instances. There are many other factors to consider, such as GPU architecture, core speed, frame buffer size and speed, etc.

No Caption Provided

Aside from claims of 4K performance, we won’t be able to accurately gauge how fast Project Scorpio will be until we at least get more technical specs. We’re also waiting to hear how fast the eight-cores will run, how much RAM the system will have, what its RAM is clocked at, what GPU architecture it uses, what manufacturing process it’s built on, and more.

You can rest easy knowing that we’ll be keeping you up to date on more Project Scorpio news as it breaks. In the meantime, stay tuned to GameSpot for more E3 coverage.

Hold the phone. How does processing power equate to how many miles per gallon of gas a car can get? More than this, how does MPG equate to how fast a car is? You've got your comparisons all mixed up.

The best news I got out of this article as a PC gamer is the idea of developers using more cores when developing games.

If Xbox One had 1.3 Teraflops for 1080p, than Xbox Scorpio has no advantage with it´s 6 Teraflopfs at all ,since 4k display means 4x 1080p display. 6 teraflops / 4 = 1.5 teraflops which technically makes it just 0.2 teraflops better than the old Xbox One. Of course Xbox Scorpio needs more bandwidth, more ram and all the rest to be precise: 4 times everything from the old Xbox one! otherwise it will be worst in performance than old Xbox One (That is on 4k) So they actually pricing the same gear as Xbox One just this time for 4k display!! It´t kind a sad story....

"What the F.U.C.K. is a TeraFLOP?" - Classless Douche-bag 2016

… It's OK for your shitty staff to casually swear for no reason, but I can't type it in your stupid comment section without punctuation. I've been logging on to GameSpot religiously for over a decade. Recent years have me longing for the good old days of Kasavin, VanOrd, Watters, Calvert, McGee, McInnis, &c., &c. What a classless piece of shit that this web site has become.

all those cores just for Oculus Rift is insane. why not just scrap this gen and go New Next Gen head to head with the NX. instead they go half ass in with mid grade. "all Xbox One accessories will work on Scorpio" Lol the Kinect can't even "connect" to the X1S without having to buy a $50 accessory. and it won't even fix the Processoring power of the Xbox One just increase its total computation. cant wait to see how they gonna try to sale us a system worth $400 again when many didn't but the 1st one.

@haze0986: You should read the article at DigitalFoundry, granted it is all speculation, but at least it is founded on education from a similiar GPU. Educate yourself a little bit before you spout crap. But if your are too lazy to read I'll sum it for you:

4k is possible, but 60 fps 4k probably not.

DF was able to get a constant 60fps but had to decrease resolution to 3264 X 1836 then upscaled to true 4k (and if you are wondering, yes that is higher than 1440). In their words, yes it is upscaled but it still looked amazing.

However all this is speculation because nothing is set in stone, but to make a firm statement about either console only proves that you are talking out of your butt.

You have no clue what the price will be for Neo or Scorpio, any thought otherwise is pure speculation.

@haze0986:

1) Agreed... but I bet it'll do some games in 4k. Some games will really want that bullet point and ti can do it if they dial back effects. They might even add it as a setting in some games...

2) Expensive is relative... $400? $500? That's still cheaper than a PC (albeit less flexible)

3) Good point, I think it's simple convenience since....

4) ... I have a PC and an XBox and while I like my PC it's still not as simple as an XBox. Most people don't want to deal with drivers, configuration, etc, etc

5) I think this is probably accurate, but 1080p 60fps can't still look really, really good

This and PS4.5 will be PREMIUM systems people dont expect for them to come any cheaper than $600-$700 these are only for console players who need the best graphics its just like how some people play on $600 gaming PC's and some on $10,000 PC's these will be high end models

@naruto945: $600-$700 is too high. I bet Scorpio will launch at $400-$500. When the PS4 launched it was quite powerful and they hit $399.

Not sure if people are aware of this, but 8 cores or even 6 cores does jack-all for gaming. Digitalfoundtry put 2, 4, 6, and 8 core CPUs to the test. Most games did not perform better with more than 4 cores, and some didn't even perform better with more than 2 cores.

8 Core is intended for tasks like video editing and encoding, which you're not going to be doing on your console. You aren't going to get any appreciable benefit for it in a gaming console.

I'll accept the 6 teraflops at face value, but I'm extremely suspicious about the claim of true 4K gaming at 60 fps. Twin GTX1080s in SLI can't handle that on current games at max settings, and that kind of setup will cost you $3000. You mean to tell me MS has a 4k/60fps console selling at a console price? I'll believe it when I see it.

@lostn: You're true about that last part. I have 1 GTX 1080 and GTA 4 doesn't perform at 60FPS and if we use FRAPS, then the FPS go down even further.

@lostn: Well for consoles, having more cores does lower the workload per core so you don't get overheating leading to YLOD. Also if xbox intends to revisit the entertainment portion of their console, they'll need the extra cores to do that with games running in the background.

@lostn: First off, the DF is talking about PC gaming and this is true. Why is this true, because general PC games, the developer doesn't want to take the time to program specifically for each core, hence for gaming it is better to get a CPU that is faster single core than slower multi-core (although this is advantage is slowly going away as programming tools become better at working with multi-core CPU's.

On the concept of consoles its a different story. Both Sony and MS consoles have mobile CPU's with 8 cores. The advantage is, every developer knows when the write code for a specific console, every single console for that type has the exact same # of cores. In order to max out the graphics in consoles, developers need to maximize the cores. This is simply a MUST because the console cores are using a mobile processor that doesn't have the grunt of a desktop CPU. This is one of the reason why consoles perform higher than an equal PC, because devs create code that is more specific for the console APU to try and maximize what they have.

IF this didn't help, why would Sony unlock the 7th core for Devs? Why wouldn't they have just kept it at 6 available cores to devs and called it a day?

@lostn: I'm dubious too, but it is worth noting that:

1) many games currently run very smoothly in 4k on a single 980ti/1080/1070. Taking the high end (looking at you Witcher 3/Crysis) and assuming that's 'normal' isn't entirely fair. A current $300 card can already do quite impressive 4k stuff.

2) Most current game are built and streamlined for 1080p since that's what the vast majority of displays are. The sliders and effects in those games that crush GPUs aren't streamlined or optimized for 4k (take antialiasing for example). If you built a game for 4k on set hardware it'd be much easier to make it run smoothly.

@lostn: What about splitting the work between two sets of 4 cores for VR, which has two screens. Could that be a reason why 8 cores is important?

@lostn: ms is lying clearly, but games today dont use extra cores because they are made that way. if a dev chose to, games could utilize 8 cores efficiently.

@lostn: Gamestop drives me crazy. I hadn't been in one for years.. but i went in one a couple months ago to buy my nephew a game. I had my iphone in my hand and when I was about to pay they guy said "hey you want to sell that phone?" I was like Wtf? "do you want to buy it or Gamestop?" He said "Gamestop.. I'll give you store credit!" I told him to suck a dick.. and he asked me to leave. I had to go to Best Buy.

I know i overreacted a bit.. but I remember them taking advantage of a young teenager when i was in there years before. (they gave him like $40 store credit for like 5 or 6 games that weren't that old) It made me pretty mad. They're so slimy.

Sry I'm off topic.. I needed to vent :)
