We Have The Xbox Series X And Series S Mockup Consoles: A Closer Look And Size Comparisons

We got our hands on official Xbox Series X and S prototypes and lined them up with the PS4 Pro, Switch, and Xbox One X.

Microsoft's next-gen consoles are looking really sleek, and the two-pronged approach of the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S doesn't just mean a difference in power, there's also a difference in physical design philosophy. I had the chance to get an up-close-and-personal look at both consoles courtesy of Microsoft, which sent over official mockups of the actual systems well-ahead of their November 10 release date.

These prototypes are non-functional and do not feature any processing parts--they're essentially dummy models. Their weight is not indicative of the actual consoles, but the design and dimensions reflect the final product. With that in mind I took a few photos to examine their form factors, see how they look and fit in a home setting, and compare their size to current-gen consoles.

Now Playing: Xbox Series X And Series S Prototype Impressions

Examining Their Form Factor

Surprisingly, the Xbox Series X doesn't seem to be as bulky as I thought it would be. The vertical design looks nice as a unique, yet minimalist piece of hardware. Its rectangular build might make it stand out among the familiar consoles, but it certainly doesn't feel out of place.

We already knew its exact dimensions, but it's another thing to try fitting the actual box in spaces at home. I didn't have trouble finding a spot for it, but if your setup already has tight vertical spaces, the height of the Series X, even when laid horizontally, may prove a challenging fit. The most important thing to note is giving the top fan enough room for airflow to keep the system cool.

The Xbox Series S (top left) and Series X (top right) alongside the three current-gen consoles in a poor person (me) TV stand.

It's clear that the Series X is intended to stand up vertically, given the orientation of the logo on the power button logo, ports on the back, and the rubber stand attached to the bottom of the console (although there are tiny rubber feet to accommodate horizontal orientation).

Of the two, personally, I think the Xbox Series S takes the crown in terms of having an aesthetically pleasing design. It's a very compact system that sports a simple, traditional shape with no extraneous flair--unless you count the massive fan vent at the top that looks like a speaker, turntable, or hot plate. There are tiny rubber feet to help the Series S stand vertically, but it's intended to be laid flat, given the orientation of the power button logo and back ports.

The Xbox Series S is simple and clean, shouts out to Hikaru Utada.

Microsoft states that it's 60% smaller than the Series X and that much is true. While the Series S shares the same measurement in length, when stood up vertically you can clearly see that it's slightly shorter in height and much thinner than the Series X.

The Xbox Series S stacked on the Xbox Series X.

A Quick Look At Their Features

Both systems feature the same ports on the back, although they are laid out a bit differently to accommodate the intended orientation. Behind the consoles are two USB 3.0 ports, an ethernet port, the power socket (same for both Series X and S), HDMI out, and the storage expansion slot for the external Seagate SSD cards sold separately.

A closer look at the ports on the back of both the Series X and Series S consoles.
A closer look at the ports on the back of both the Series X and Series S consoles.

On the front, you have one USB port, the wireless connection sync button, and the power button, but as you may know, the Xbox Series S does not feature a disk drive while the Series X does.

Compared To The PS4 Pro, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One X

When sat horizontally next to the PS4 Pro, it's clear how the Series X is much thicker in height but saves space by cutting down on length. From this perspective, the two systems share a similar width, though. The Series S has about the same height as the PS4 Pro, a bit less width, and like the more powerful Series X, it has about half the length of Sony's console. The compact nature of the Series S really shines in this comparison.

The Series S beside a PS4 Pro, and Series X atop a PS4 Pro. Use the slider to check out both photos.

When you have your Nintendo Switch docked, it sports about the same height as the Series X laid flat, which should give Switch owners an idea of how much space they'll need if they're looking to get this new console. Of course, the comparisons of a handheld hybrid console and traditional systems isn't a fair one, but showing the Switch undocked alongside the Series X and Series S should give you an idea of how Microsoft's new consoles physically shape up.

The Nintendo Switch atop (undocked) and beside (docked) the Xbox Series S and X. Use the slider to check out both photos.

Xbox One X owners are sure to be interested in how the Series X and S stack against the current-gen powerhouse. Horizontally, the One X and Series X share the same width, but of course, the overall height is a clear and major difference. When looking at length, the Series X cuts off about a third compared to the One X.

The Xbox Series X on top of the Xbox One X, the differences in height and length are quite noticeable.
The Xbox Series X on top of the Xbox One X, the differences in height and length are quite noticeable.

Things get more interesting between the One X and Series S. They have about the same height, but the Series S shaves off a little bit of width and, like the Series X, cuts around a third in length. When looking at it from all angles while alongside the One X, you really get a sense of the slick and compact nature of the Series S, especially with its unified body and form factor.

The unified body of the Series S makes it look even more sleek than the One X and even chops down on width and length.

We Out Here Tryna Function

We were sent these Xbox Series X and Series S non-functioning prototypes less than a day before publishing this article, so this serves as a casual comparison and up-close look at Microsoft's next-gen consoles. And while these are the complete final shells of the physical design, we don't have anything to share about the gameplay experience, which should go without saying. But that doesn't mean we don't have plenty of coverage about the power these next-gen consoles offer.

The Xbox Series X is set to launch at $499 USD while the cheaper Xbox Series S will go for $299, and both consoles release on November 10. For information on what makes them different from a technical perspective, be sure to read our big Xbox Series X and Series S comparison. And for all our other coverage, check out the stories below.

Yeah, it's fugly as hell and huge, but who cares, all that matters in the end is how powerful the machine will be. I'm really starting to believe that the 30FPS era is finally over. The wait has been sooooooo long.

"Surprisingly, the Xbox Series X doesn't seem to be as bulky as I thought it would be."

Wow, that thing is big. Seeing it in a real environment really puts it into perspective how huge and clunky the new Xbox really is. I guess they tried to not only make it look like a trash can but to also get as close as possible to the dimensions of one. That thing's size is only comparable to the orginal Xbox, which might still be the largest console ever released.

But why do all consoles seem to have the same width when placed horizontally? Strange coincidence.

@Rufus_the_rat: We'll see how tall it really is but it sure won't be as fat as the garbage can. That's by far the fattest console we've ever seen. About twice as fat probably as any of the biggest ones before that. That's what makes it look so huge to me. And depending on your setup you might have a hard time fitting such a huge brick in somewhere. I sure couldn't so I'd probably have to put it on the floor.

@george9872: Yeah, I'm sure the PC nerds won't be harassing the new Xbox owners over its inferior hardware. Certainly things will be different this time.

Every console is more powerful than any PC when it launches. There's nothing new about that and the next Xbox certainly is no different in that regard. But as the hardware starts to age that changes of course. And then the weirdoes come out and start hating on consoles because they need to justify having spent thousands of $ on a new PC somehow.

Funny how Sony hasn't send any PS5 mockups to gaming websites....🤔

Sony trying to hide its official footprint got beyond ridiculous......they may not say it but we already know how gargantuan the damn thing is, so they should just have ripped that bandage off.

Not gonna lie...I'm really warming up to the design of the Series X, and the Series S looks very TV stand friendly. The Series X footprint would fit very nicely behind my monitor with a few game cases stacked next to it.

As if the cross-gen handicap wasn't enough, they release a slower next-gen console alongside the Series X. Not looking good for game optimization...

It's one after another with Xbox, do they not say these ideas out loud beforehand?

The Series X and S evoke the adage that form follows function; they look like their design started (and maybe ended) with the physical needs of the hardware.

The PS5's curving sides and popped collar appear unnecessary; something added just to look cool. That'd just be harmless frippery if it didn't seem like the PS5 needs a stand to lay on its side.

So, even though the Series X and S boxes are pretty no frills, I like their designs better because nothing about them looks like ornamentation purely for ornamentation's sake.

@mogan: Well, Sony always cared more about the design of their consoles. I guess they've always been trying to make them stand out or at least fit in among all the other hardware in the room, which is mostly designed in a similar any nowadays. They've started doing this with the PS2.

While MS probably was never even capable of designing anything decent looking. The first Xbox was just huge, the second one was not very good looking either. They probably never cared as much about the design as Sony but just looking at what they came up with for the next gen, I'd say they're clearly not capable of designing anything that looks even half decent. A trash can and a mini stove, with the latter looking like they didn't even try at all to make it look decent. Normally only generic no name hardware looks like that.

@Atzenkiller: We'll have to agree to disagree on that. I think Xbox and PlayStation case design have both had hits and misses over the years, but this generation the Xbox hits and the PlayStation's misses more than usual. The Series X and S both look clean and functional, but I can't not see those PS5 side panels as an element forced into a design they didn't fit.

The Xbox one X is a beautiful console, it has 12gig of vram shared memory, 3 gig for the operating system, and 9 for the developers the Xbox series s has 10 gig of vram shared memory, and either 7 or 8 gig for the developers, and either 2 or 3 gig for the operating system so that leaves the Xbox one X with 1 extra gig or so of system memory, but a much hampered down CPU and Architecture.

It's a tricky one, because crytek are working on crysis remastered with raytracing on Xbox one x

https://youtu.be/zVzGCGMbrsM

So that raises the question, why couldn't the series X inherit the Xbox one X style, the Dev kits for Xbox series s/x are In the form factor of the Xbox one X under their specified code name.

Still impressive, but let's see the benchmarks against the series s Vs Xbox one X, because you could be getting a great old console for even cheaper the price if the Xbox one X sells second hand with ssd's inside.

@njs72: Wow, you really make some pretty weird choices. Well, I hope playing games on that supercheap version will be just as enjoyable as playing on the proper consoles. Since at least it looks better so if the game's not running as well as you'd expect, you can take a look at the mini stove to cheer you up.

I'm not sure what to call those things between "practical design" or "lazy design".

If it looks too much like a big speaker or a sub woofer, then it doesn't look like a video game console. But I'm sure some engineer somewhere out there would say something like "It's practical". And that would be missing the point entirely.

I'm looking at something like the Sega Dreamcast, or the Nintendo 64, or heck the Genesis model 1 or 2, why not even the Super Famicom and I'm thinking "Yeah, that's a video game console", in terms of design. I mean the PS4's design was sleek, modern and had some interesting angles to it. It was simple, yet elegant. But now I'm looking at the Series X, and Series S and... my Lord man...

"Here's your box, enjoy".

Anyway... the games, at least, is what matters the most. I guess by now we can just say "design be damned" apparently no one cares about that stuff anymore.

@rekonym: Well, it looks like a PC tower. PCs were never exactly good looking and people were fine with it. Until they started putting all kinds of LED lights in them to make them look like a christmas tree. But it seems that MS is still looking at its console more like a PC. For an actual console, yeah, that's a very boring and unusual design.

@rekonym: That's like complaining that the newest iPhone or Galaxy doesn't look like your razr flip phone. Times change, demands change. I think the One X and One S are still some of the best designs ever. I don't think fondly back on the OG Xbox or PS3, despite them "looking like consoles" and I have hardly any nostalgia for the shape-profile of the N64 or Dreamcast (despite liking them). You're also free to have your opinions, of course, but just recognize that many, many people - including me - like the designs. (Same with the PS5).

@highammichael If I could make a suggestion as someone else who has had computer desks and electronics up against a bright cream colored wall. Measure the back of your shelving unit, then pop down to Home depot or anywhere that will let you cut your wood right in the shop. Grab yourself a quarter inch thick cut of particle board or plywood (anything moderately sturdy and light) and a can of matte black spray paint. Toss a couple quick coats of paint on there and then put it behind the display. The black wires will all but disappear.

If you actually want to put some effort in you can also cut a few small holes for wires and attach it to the back of your shelving unit. I recommend velcro tape. Nobody's going to be looking at the 3mm gap on the back of your stand and it makes it hella easy to put on and take off.

I didn't realize how much of a difference this would make until after it was done. Alternatively you can buy white wires, white/cream tape or just paint the wires. That or try to stealth all the wires. As someone that seems to need to fuss behind my setup more than expected the black backboard was by far the cheapest and easiest while being extremely effective. It also allows you the option of putting in a some cheap LED accent lighting.

That is unless you like seeing the wall behind there. If that's the case maybe go white or stealth the wires like I mentioned.

The PS5's overall volume is def larger, but both are gonna be hard to put into various setups - PS5 with the added challenge of making it blend into the aesthetics of a room haha. I am fortunate enough to just have a desk with some open space :D

@cyrribrae: Right, white and blue sticks out on most peoples entertainment centers, which over the last decade and a half has typically been darker colored hues of browns and black.

That's not a concern for me though, I will probably not buy a PS5 any time soon. I have a side stand for my entertainment center as well, so room isn't a problem for me.

Does anybody know how you sign up for the "financing" 35$/month option? It's a killer deal, just wondering if that's gonna be a direct from MS thing or if GameStop and other retailers are going to offer it through MS. I know we don't have much info on it yet either, just throwing a line out.

The Xbox consoles are sleek and modern looking. Like they would fit in well to any adults entertainment setup.

The ps5 in comparison looks like an oversized cheap plastic fisher price kids toy. It’s awful.

I’ll definitely wait for sony to bring out a slim/pro model once it has some games worth buying and when there’s a good discount.

XseX day one baby.

@gamerbum: Well physical designs aside the PS5 will be running 5-10 fps higher than the Xbox Series X while looking better graphically.

Why? Well its simple; developers only have the 1 SKU for the PS5 to worry about while for the Xbox they have 3 SKU to deal with. The truth is developers don’t particularly have infinite resources to throw at a game at a given time. Time in particularly is a constraint. When the game comparisons come out on youtube you will see what I mean.

This wouldn’t be first time Xbox lagged behind Sony. Its mostly always been this way anyhow.

@emmanuelguerrero:

No your wrong.

The CPUs in both Xbox’s are faster than the ps5 CPU. Plus the ps5 can’t run it’s GPU and CPU simultaneously at there peak clocks.

So the CPU or GPU will have to throttle back even further.

That’s why ps5 is not a true 10.2TF console it’s 9.2TF in practice just as the leaks said and DF reported.

I can’t wait for the first comparisons to come in. Framerates are going to be better on the 2 Xbox’s.

@gamerbum: I wouldn't say the Xbox Series models looks sleek and modern. Still I would agree that they are a better choice overall than the PS5. The PS5 seems like a custom event model as opposed to a consumer model. Also don't let that shapely figure fool you, the thing is huge. I'm worried I'm going to buy it and want to replace it the moment they come out with something more subtle. Much like I did with the PS4 to the slim
