Valve's Steam Link PC Game Streaming Box Is Incredibly Cheap Right Now

Get Steam Link and a game for less than $17.

Those in the market to play PC games on their TV can pick up a Steam Link at a heavy discount right now. It's unclear if this is a price error, but a bundle that consists of the streaming box and an $11 game can currently be had for less than $9, although you will have to pay shipping.

The bundle itself treats the Steam Link as a $1 purchase--quite the discount, given that it's regularly priced at $50. With the game, Icey, being discounted to $7.69, the bundle's price is $8.69. Given this is a physical item you're purchasing, Steam charges for shipping, which costs $7.99. That brings the total to $16.68.

No Caption Provided

Even if you're uninterested in Icey (a side-scrolling action game released last year), that's still an excellent price for a Steam Link. With it, you can stream games from your computer to another HDMI-capable display in your home. Steam Link is capable of running games at 1080p / 60 FPS, although your ability to do so will depend on your network. Valve recommends a wired connection, but you can use Steam Link wirelessly.

The Steam Controller pairs nicely with the device, but it's not your only input option. Third-party controllers will work, including PS4 and Xbox One S controllers.

Used mine once. Then I pick up a NVidia Shield, it is light-years beyond better.

Why would I need this when I can already play Steam games on my TV with an HDMI cable? And from comments using WIFI to broadcast the signal is even more work than needed.

There's a reason the Steam Link is "incredibly cheap."

Works great both over wifi or ethernet for me but then again Ive got a beefy PC and a high-end router. It really needs to be connected on the 5Ghz band on the router for optimal results. Next step... 4K! The only complain that I have is the very bad or non-existent controller support(Even on the ones advertised as supported) on non-Steam games that make you purchase a third party app through Steam in order to make it work natively.

@m33ts4k0z: I can't get mine to work well even with the 5Ghz band. It is super choppy. Were there any additional settings you tweaked?

@lionheartssj1: I havent changed anything special on my router but feel free to take a look at my configuration: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1j4rESmf75RU0VvZEtDMEFXRzQ/view?usp=sharing

The thing is that my router and steam link are "behind" each other and there is only a thick cement wall in between them. How is your reception? Do you have good signal strength?

@m33ts4k0z: Signal strength is pretty good because there's only one drywall wall between my desktop an the router. My Steam Link is hardwired into the router. Perhaps if my desktop were hardwired to the router and Steam Link on WiFi? I have a Netgear Nighthawk X4 so I thought the router could handle it.

I remember when valve claimed that they where going to take over the living room with the steam box and ps4 and xbox would get stiff competition, how did that workout for them.

@yukushi: It was doomed to fail the way they approached it. Most gamers that would be enticed to buy a console like restricted experience like that would be console gamers. They should have designed the hardware and subventioned to cost roughly like a console or a couple of hundred more. That pricepoint and with pc and steam prices and free online would be a valuable proposition for console-like gamers.

The way they did it was let third parties do their own thing at pc level prices yet you get a machine that is as useless for anything else just like a console with only a boost in performance depending on what you pay.

Not many pc gamers would be enticed to go for a steam machine over a normal pc. One of the top reasons pc gamers play on pc is the fact that it is an open platform and it is a machine that is so useful for so much more than gaming, something that would be gone with a steam machine. You also have the option to go for the best deal from all clients for any given game/software instead of only steam and ALL games on steam rather than only the 20% that supports steam os.

And you can build a fully functional compact pc with a proper OS for the living room if you want, not to mention you have nvidia shield, steam link or just a cable to connect it to your tvs anyway if you want a tower giving you better cooling for overclocking. I use all three solutions myself for all tvs I have.

I will say though, this steam link deal is killer, if you have a pc that can play games, this is a must have, especially at this price point. But at full price, if you only go for one device and can't go cable, the nvidia shield is way better, but it costs alot more.

I have one, works well.

Wouldn't use it for fighting games, but general gaming e.g. Resident Evil 4, works perfectly...

You have to use this wired, or deal with a huge amount of lag, or reduced visual fidelity!

@sdecker425: Na, when sitting 3-5 foot away from the TV you barely notice the visual difference.

@Zorlac: They could just say "pricing error" and cancel the order. No law saying they have to from what I can tell.

Does this thing do Ad-Hoc connection? I've tried Steam streaming in-home from my PC to Laptop, but my crappy Comcast actually made it a very miserable connection - if you could stream directly to the machine I would bet I'd see better results

@xantufrog: It connects through the router. I use it both on WiFi and Wired and they both return about 5.xx ms latency which is pretty good. The Link itself has tools to test your network. I dont see any delay in input and they image is not breaking or anything. It does what is advertised and its really cheap even without the bundle.

@xantufrog: Depends on what the Steam In-Home Streaming feature is capable of. I've never read anything about ad-hoc though.
