Valheim Sells 2 Million Copies, A Huge Result For A Game Made By 5 People

The Norse-inspired multiplayer game also exceeded the player counts for GTA 5 and Destiny 2.

The multiplayer fantasy survival game Valheim is off to a very good start. After reaching a peak of over 360,000 concurrent players on Steam, publisher Coffee Stain has now confirmed the Norse-inspired game reached more than 2 million copies sold in under two weeks. [Update: the game has grown even bigger still, now reaching 3 million units sold]

Valheim is currently in Early Access on Steam, having launched on February 2. At its peak for concurrent users, Valheim exceeded the numbers of Grand Theft Auto V and Destiny 2.

Now Playing: The Valheim Viking Guide For Beginners

Developed by Iron Gate Studio, Valheim is developed by a team of 5 people, though it started as a passion project from a single person: Richard Svensson. Coffee Stain took notice of the game and signed Iron Gate to a publishing deal in 2018.

In a statement, Svensson said he did not anticipate the huge success of Valheim. The goal was to cover development costs, and with sales of 2 million, the company has done that and then some.

"I guess our future is safe for a while now," Svensson said. "Valheim has not been rushed, it's a product of more than three years of iterative development with features added and tested on a core team of early adopters. Also as a designer I don't like to follow popular conventions but try to go my own way, this seems to have worked out."

Coffee Stain executive Sebastian Badylak said, "The gods have truly favoured Valheim. We've been refreshing the sales report to get the latest numbers, and it’s showing no signs of slowing down."

Coffee Stain started out as a developer, releasing games like Goat Simulator and Satisfactory, before opening up a publishing division in 2017. Coffee Stain also published Deep Rock Galactic, which has also sold more than 2 million copies.

If you're struggling early on trying to survive in Valheim, we've rounded up some Valheim beginner tips that should help you out. These include the tips you need to build, repair, improve your skills, and acquire more resources.

Looking ahead, Iron Gate has lots and lots of plans for ongoing support for Valheim. You can see the full rundown of Valheim expansion plans here on Steam.

@triplebullet: Its funny i was thinking about it the other day, when was the the last time there was truely a "AAA" game?

I mean big companies are putting out big games. but are they really triple A.

By the standard, it would include things like bug free, and content not cut from the game to sell at a later date.

I would make the argument that "AAA" doesn't exist any more.

Seriously cheers to that team! 5 people and 2 million sales is impressive no matter how you slice it. I do not enjoy nor understand the enjoyment of survival games as to me they are tedious but will never shit on someones success.

@deth420: I took a closer look at the game and I am thinking that anyone who is into this particular style of game will find plenty to enjoy it. But as for me, an old school gamer, this title doesn't interest me. Just my thoughts.

@emmanuelguerrero:

to each his own.

I have been gaming since atari\nintendo days. so I lived through this art style. its not that bad.

really though, with the lighting and other newer effects, the game looks pretty good. the ocean and waves actually go up and down. (novel idea)

really the game play is pretty fun to. its not just mindless building, or killing...its both!

;)

So you are telling me that 5 people with limited sources made a surprise seller, yet Microsoft with its unlimited resources and tons of people made the survival Grounded and there was barely anything to do in the game on release? The parts of the game I have seen so far looks fun, can anyone vouch for it?

@xmalious: Guys he wants something like Rust to grief at other players. These types of players are mindless drones and don't know better than survival multiplayer games (that's all they play), where they can grief nonstop.

this has been more engrossing them pretty much any "AAA" game.

it has some flaws and quirks, but over all has a great cycle.
