Universe at War 360 Update

Last year's capable strategy game is coming soon to an Xbox 360 near you. We took a look.

Longtime strategy developer Petroglyph released Universe at War: Earth Assault late last year onto PCs, but it didn't get much of a break afterward. Since then, the team has been hard at work on the Xbox 360 version of Universe at War, set for release at the end of March. Like its PC counterpart, the game will offer three distinctly different races with unique building models, offensive abilities, and upgrade potential. Read our review of the PC version for more info.

A streamlined controller-specific interface should make the game accessible to 360 owners.
A streamlined controller-specific interface should make the game accessible to 360 owners.

Petroglyph has made numerous changes to the 360 game, mostly on the interface side, to make it more accessible to those playing it with a traditional thumbstick-based controller. Primarily, the heads-up display has been scaled down and moved from the bottom to the top of the screen, allowing you to see more of the action at once. At the bottom, you'll now see some hovering prompts instructing you on which buttons you can hit to access various menus. One of these new menus lets you access the unit product queues of any of your buildings from anywhere on the map, without having to physically move your perspective to the location of those buildings.

Wisely, the designers have gone to great lengths to minimize the amount of precise cursor controlling you'll have to do to select units and so forth. The D pad snap-to control sounds like the most useful; it will let you go from unit to unit with a tap of the D pad, naturally. It's also directional, so you can hit up to snap to the closest group of units upward from your current perspective. This snap-to control also extends to more specific functions, such as the upgradeable hard points on the Hierarchy's massive walkers. You can use the D pad to cycle through those as well.

There are a number of face button-based shortcuts too. You can tap and double-tap various buttons to select all the units on the screen, select only the units onscreen of a certain type, or select all of the units on the entire map. Instead of the typical selection box that most strategy games use, Universe at War will let you hold down the A button and simply "paint" over the units you want to select. This will hopefully make it a little easier to assign those all-important control groups in the absence of a keyboard and mouse.

Online, you won't even know what platform your opponent is playing on.
Online, you won't even know what platform your opponent is playing on.

Multiplayer is a big part of any real-time strategy game, and Petroglyph has managed to get the 360 game working online with the PC original. Interestingly, you won't be able to tell whether the player you're facing off against is playing on the 360 or PC. Company reps say that players using the Xbox 360 controls in their internal testing are capably holding their own against players on the PC, and, in fact, the 360 game will even contain achievements related to beating PC users in multiplayer. The RTS genre has traditionally been a hard one to fit onto consoles, but it looks like Petroglyph is taking the necessary steps to smooth the transition on this one.

I was going to grab this for my PC but since my PC is getting outdated fast, all just due to single 2Ghz CPU, I decided to wait for the 360 version. Wow I can't complain, controls work really well and I have a ton of fun playing with such great gameplay. Not to say it doesn't need to fix a few things.^ ^

I just bought the game last night, and I felt the controls were pretty good. Having never played a RTS on a console before, They were pretty responsive and quick once you get used to them.

As of writing this, the game has just been released on the 360 and some first impressions are starting to come in: almost all are very positive. Most of the talk in the forums seems to indicate that this is the best console RTS out there, at least as far as controls go anyway.

jknight5422 agreed as well, but I can't seem to get over the fact that it is always better to play an RTS on a PC...

I like the idea that people are trying seriously to make RTS work on consoles. It's a step in the right direction.

thenephariouson: I believe Shadowrun was a "first party" title, which is why DMUK said it was the first "third party" title. Hope that helps........

DMUK, Its not the first cross platform game (360 & PC) Shadowrun was, and before it was released the developers had to make major changes to the PC version as they were getting totally owned by 360 players. Personllay i think 360 & PC cross Platform gaming is definately the way forward, its a great challange and really good fun, but i do think that being an RTS it will be much easier & faster for PC players to control their units. Well.... im up for the challenge anyway : )

YO! This game will be nice..The only bad thing is that if you play a PC guy you will be disadvantaged since he will have a mouse, which is obviously faster.

Game is alot of fun. Remember, its the first third party developed title to allow PC/XBOX gamers battle online. Fantastic! It is a lot of fun to play as well. << LINK REMOVED >> for info to play against the Dev team on Thursdays :)

Have to agree with bane546: if they just came out with a mouse and keyboard for the 360, I'd give up on pc gaming altogether.

i dont get why they dont come out with a mouse/keyboard adaptor for the 360... it doesnt matter how smooth the transition is from PC to console it will never be even close. its way too frustrating to play an RTS on a console. rented C&C3 and it was close, but no cigar. i would have bought several strategy games if they just gave me a mouse..... i just need something to replace my laptop

Hopefully the 360 edition will rid the game of the bugs on the PC version. Not saying the PC version wasn't good but it could've been a lot better in the bug-free department

It is really satisfying to se all the developers come up with possible solutions to the conole RTS. This is innovation here.

I hope RTS make it to consoles more and they perfect the controls. They may not be as great as a PC's but I hope they get pretty good.

Glad to see companies really trying hard to make RTS' more accessible for the consoles. How about adding chatpad support for those of us that have them? Would make grouping units super-simple!

C&C3 was completely playable on the 360. Was it better than the PC version? Well I wouldn't go that far, but for the many millions of people who console game and don't PC game, it was more than adequate. It (and even LOTR:BFME to a much smaller extent) showed that strategy games not only can be done on the 360, but are actually enjoyable. Hence the reason for the pretty decent size rush of strategy games to the 360. Examples include: Halo Wars, Tom Clancy's End War, Supreme Commander, Universe at War, and the next C&C.

I am hesitant about RTS games on a console because off the lack of KB and mouse support. But, I like the fact that developers are putting their problem solving skills to the test with trying to make the console controller work. With Halo Wars, Sup Com, and now Universe at War all hitting soon, I am interested to see the different ways they deal with the issue.

Sounds like they did well with the controls. Pressing up on the Dpad to select the closest unit is a good idea.
slai47 universe at war or supreme commander?
UAW by a long shot. Have you see the videos for Supcom 360? The UI is horrible. Everything I've read about the UAW 360 UI has the previewer giving praise for how well its been done and the new features they've added. Also, the faction diversity in UAW rips SupCom to shreds. BTW, I have the PC but plan on getting the 360 version because it looks so much better visually than what my crappy PC rig can handle. and yes, I do love UAW, its factions make it a great RTS.

Petroglyph has good intentions hear, but I'm afraid the game will be overlooked by giants like C&C and World in Conflict later this year. I'm not sure if Universe has a fighting chance and dont get me wrong: I like what I see, but I'm skeptical of the possible online community and ports in genneral.

Achievements for defeating PC players? Oh yeah, this games gonna be great. Not that i'm a hardcore 360 fan, its just that PC players always brag about how bad there gonna beat 360 players. Still like i've said a million times before, I loved empire at war and hopefully i'll love this. : )
