UK Chart: The Last of Us scores second week at top

Animal Crossing: New Leaf sticks around in second.

Naughty Dog's The Last of Us has secured a second week at the top of the UK gaming chart.

No Caption Provided

The Last of Us debuted in first last week, claiming the biggest launch for a new IP since Rockstar's L.A. Noire in 2011. Naughty Dog's latest was also the third-biggest game launch of 2012, following Tomb Raider and BioShock Infinite.

Nintendo's 3DS-exclusive Animal Crossing: New Leaf scored its second week at No. 2, and FIFA 13 climbed back up to third.

Tomb Raider was fourth, with Max Payne 3 resurging to fifth thanks to prince promotions. Shop discounts also allowed Call of Duty: Black Ops II to climb eight places and finish sixth.

Far Cry 3 was seventh, Injustice eighth, and Assassin's Creed III ninth. Codemasters' Grid 2, which debuted in the charts at first three weeks ago, drops to tenth.

PQube's MotoGP 13 was the only new release in the chart this week, entering at 15th.

The Top 20 UK chart for the week ending June 22:

1. The Last of Us

It is just amazing that Tomb Raider has gone this far. Really quite a great game, a must-have for this year. Bioshock is getting really shocking now, it is way down there even with a 9.0 rating.

This means ratings and sales are still gamer-controlled, not critic-controlled. :D

@AggrandizedUser @goldmask I've finished it three times, and during every time I found new stuff that I missed in previous playthroughs and new ways to sneak past/mass murder the enemies. Not to mention the story is so good that you'll want to revisit it every now and then. It has plenty of replay value.

@chambers831 Because Metro: Last Light didn't sell all that well unfortunately. It'll go the similar way with Metro: 2033 in terms of lifetime sales.

Also, the UK love their soccer, haven't you heard?

This game appears to be sold out at many Canadian retailers at the moment, including Aamzon.ca. I can't remember the last time there was this much demand for a game. While I don't think TLOU is "perfect", it is damn close and delivered on all fronts. It is definitely my favorite game of 2013 (yes, it was far better than Bioshock Infinite in almost every way).

I understand where you're coming form about Bioshock Infinite. The game started off with a bang but became boring and repetitive during the middle portion. It started to pick up again near the end, but it was simply too little too late. I quickly grew tired of shooting drones of faceless soldiers over and over again and had to push myself to carry on. While it is true that the story is enough to redeem itself quite a bit, the gameplay was lacking and this can't be ignored. Many people forgive the problems of Infinite due to its ending but that isn't a fair analysis of the game as a whole. I feel like the story which Levine wanted to tell just wasn't suited to the FPS genre and this is what held it back from being truly great. I really liked Elizabeth's character, but I didn't much care about anyone else and wouldn't want to revisit the world.

In contrast, every single character you meet in TLOU is so well realized that you forget you are playing a game. The writing is better than most films. I don't remember the last time I genuinely cared about the characters in a game and was depressed to see the game end (even though it was a perfect conclusion). While I'll admit that the gameplay could have used a bit more variety and did get a bit repetitive at times, it was thoughtfully designed and didn't get out of hand. Infinite lost its focus with all the abundance of shooting, but TLOU always remained on course and used the confrontations to further develop the characters and their motivations. Enjoy the rest of the game. It only gets better and better as it unfolds.

Gamespot damaged its credibility as a trusted source of reviews when it's scored this game 8/10. I defy anyone to play this game and not give it a score closer to its metacritic average of 96. It is personally my game of this generation.

@Intellips Gamespot damaged its credibility because its rating was a bit off from the Metacritic average? That's ridiculous. TLOU was a great game and my favorite of 2013, but it wasn't perfect. It got a bit repetitive, had AI problems, had some technical glitches that should have been patched before release (my game froze up and had to be restarted on two occasions), and weak platforming sections where you needed to move around ladders, dumpsters or rafts (this felt forced and tacked on). If you didn't see ANY of these faults, then you aren't being objective enough. The job of a reviewer is to be critical and point out the problems with a game. People shouldn't be faulted for having an opinion different than your own.

@Xristophoros

I wrote a long reply to your comment and I lost it as I wasn't logged in. In summation:

Anyway, I partly agree with you and you make some very valid points. However, GS reviews consistently differ wildly from the metacritic average. Just look the the reviews for the legend of zelda SS, Luigi's Mansion, Gravity rush to name a few. When the consensus is that a game is X but GS says it Y, then there is an issue with the credibility of the scores given on this site by some reviewers.

@Xristophoros i agree with the AI, it could of been a little better. i only noticed a couple tiny glitches but there was an update when i first started it so maybe that fixed some of the ones you saw. the platform sections are thankfully few and far between. but the key point is the enjoyability of the game. if a game has great gameplay then the small faults can be forgiven, im about 70% through and the storyline, graphics (for a ps3 game), atmosphere counteract the few minor downpoints. its definitely one of the best ps3 games ive played.

maybe the game is an 8. but my gripe about the score is when you compare it to other 9 out of 10 games on gamespot, TLOS is just as good or much better. taking uncharted 3 as an example since its a similar game, TLOS is leagues ahead of uncharted 3. the faults found in TLOS are 10x worse in U3. glitches, poor AI, considerably more repetitive platforming sections, and compared to TLOS the graphics in U3 are quite poor. the story wasnt anywhere near as engrossing as TLOS either. maybe because it was the third in the series it was becoming a little formulaic. to be consistant The Last of US should of scored higher or at least the same as Uncharted 3. i just cant help think that hes personally scored it a little lower to cause controversy... he knew it was a high scoring game everywhere else so knocked off a point just to be different from everyone else. its certainly worked in getting gamespot a bit of publicity....

@djb1203 You make a lot of good points. I would give the game a solid 9 due to some of the problems I mentioned. They didn't hinder my overall enjoyment of the game (though they were important enough for me to mention).

To be honest, it is difficult to compare TLOU directly with Uncharted since they both set out to do very different things. There are certainly some similarities, though, and I agree TLOU was an overall better experience for me. The same might not be said by everyone (as some people would find Uncharted more "fun to play" than TLOU).

The reviewer found it difficult to relate to the protagonist (Joel) for his own personal reasons and that was reflected in the score. Arguably, the most important aspect of TLOU is its story and characters. How much or how little you empathize with their actions is a very subjective thing. If someone has a problem with how they were portrayed and is not convinced within the context of the game, then it will be reflected in the score. TLOU is as much a story as it is a game so both sides need to be debated. I think this is the main reason it was given an 8 by this reviewer.

@Intellips I agree with your opinion of the game (it's certainly one of the games of the generation), but not with your credibility comment. I disagree with Tom's score, but not with the review. But frankly, the score is the least important part of the review.
