UK Chart: FIFA 11 shoots, scores number one

EA's flagship football franchise flattens foes on its way to third-biggest UK launch ever, accounts for nearly two in three Xbox 360 and PS3 game sales.

FIFA 11 has entered the UK chart in first place after another successful and critically acclaimed launch for EA Sports' dominant footie franchise, selling 21 percent more copies than FIFA 10. Not only is FIFA 11 the biggest FIFA launch ever, but it's also the third-biggest UK launch of all time, behind Modern Warfare 2 and GTAIV. According to Chart-Track, FIFA 11 accounted for 63 percent of all Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 games sold this week.

Since 2008, there has been a shift in momentum for FIFA sales away from PlayStation platforms and towards the Xbox 360. At the 2008 launch of FIFA 09, 51 percent of sales were on PlayStation consoles, versus 42 percent on the Xbox 360. This year, FIFA achieved 50 percent of its sales on Xbox 360 and only 47 percent on the PlayStation 3. The PS2 version failed to appear in the all-formats chart, despite debuting at number one on the PS2, deposing FIFA 10. FIFA 09 broke back into the PS2 top 10 too, reaching number eight. According to UK sales-tracking body Chart-Track, Xbox 360 sales for FIFA are up 26 percent year-on-year, while they're up 23 percent year-on-year for the PlayStation 3. Wii sales made up 2 percent of last year's launch-week totals, but a mere one percent this year; Chart-Track did not provide year-on-year changes for sales on the version released onto Nintendo's platform, which is a markedly different and more family-focussed affair than the PS3 and Xbox 360 variants.

Cover athlete Rooney's problems on the pitch aren't hampering FIFA 11's sales.
Cover athlete Rooney's problems on the pitch aren't hampering FIFA 11's sales.

After tremendous first-week sales, F1 2010 has fallen to second in the chart, but it has remained ahead of both Dead Rising 2, which climbed to third, and Halo: Reach, which has fallen another two places from second to fourth.

FIFA 11 was the only new entry to make it into the top 10 this week. However, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11 rose from 12th to sixth, perhaps boosted by interest in this week's Ryder Cup. Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock also rose from sixth to fifth. Sports Champions fell two places to seventh, and Sid Meier's Civilization V dropped from fourth to 10th. Chart regular Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands dropped one place to eighth, and Toy Story 3 remains ninth.

I'm just glad Dead Rising 2 is still number 3. I hope it can hit number 1! It's nice to see a decent third party Japanese game actually do well in the Uk. I wish other great third party games like No More Heroes, Yakuza and Tatsunoko vs Capcom shared the same sucess... I guess it all comes down to marketing to a modern, lazier generation of consumers, who only know what they see.

Time to admit it like me Ninty fanboys. Wii has fallen in popularity worldwide./ Xbox 360 is topping the Wii in monthly charts. The PS3 is getting close to the Wii. Lets check the NPD report. Or maybe it is that casuals don't buy as much games as hardcore players.

@ GamerLegend10, I know your second point was not directed at me, but I can tell you how much they can change. They can IMPROVE the game, which is what they try to do each year. There was a significant improvement in last year's version with regards to gameplay, but there were some bugs in the manager mode. This year now they have improved the gameplay again giving you more control over passing and shooting as well as being able to play as the keeper. I don't know if you're into football, but if you are, you would see the differences when they improve upon the game. While I agree some FPS' can vary, I don't see myself buying COD, MOH and Battlefield as they are mostly the same. I will buy Halo, KZ and one of the 3 mentioned (preferably COD).

@mike_3000 yeah i suppose people want to be up to date with these things, i was just being a little ignorant before. although in my opinion i still dislike them (although can be fun on occasion) @Sphire yeah i get where u are coming from, although FPSs can vary vastly, but a football game is a football game, how much can they change really?

@ GamerLegend10 The main reason they bring out a new one every year, apart from improvements to the game, is because of the amount of player movements that take place in the off-season. While other games like NBA, NFL, MLB etc. concentrate on one league, FIFA has to cater for 2 and 3 leagues in EACH country involved (England, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Potugal, USA, Brazil, Argentina etc.) as well as the major national teams. There are a lot of new player additions each year.

Anything that knocks Halo down the rankings a peg or two is a great thing in my eyes. It keeps the fanboys quiet.

@GamerLegend10 A lot of people could say the same thing about FPSs, and they wouldn't be far from wrong. Just like there, people buy new football games because it's the 'in' and 'new' thing. Heck people buy a lot of things simply for being 'new' and 'in' no matter how little upgrade is implemented.

Good for EA I guess? It only means that within a year I'll be able to buy Fifa 11 for less than 75% of the pricetag haha. Fingers crossed about Medal of Honour later this October.

i dont get it, i just dont see what is so good about Fifa (well to much hype for an ok (ish) game) or any football games, there all basically the same anyway. i mean i can see the fun in playing it with mates every once in a while especially if your into the sport but its just not that good to buy like every bloody game (which a lot of people do) which is marginally different to the last. I would expect 1 new football game every 2-4 years would be good enough.

@Sirbobislost It's not that. It's that the 360 is the chav's console of choice lol. And before the 360 fanboys blow a fuse, I'm joking, I'm sure there are a few PS3 owners who are chavs too :D

Glad to hear the news. FIFA has improved massively over the past few editions. And with PES realizing it's recent flaws and correcting it, seems like us footie fans are in for a treat. :D

Every year, somewhere, within EA's offices, they are giving << LINK REMOVED >> to the dude(s) who suggested that they start their own digital football game franchise. It's undeniably a money-maker - year after year without fail.
