Ubisoft: ZombiU unprofitable, no plans for sequel

CEO Yves Guillemot says zombie game for Wii U did not pay off; EA COO Peter Moore believes Nintendo's latest console has been a "disappointment."

Wii U launch title ZombiU was not profitable and there are no plans, or desire, for a sequel. That's according to Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, who told GamesIndustry International that "betting big" on the Wii U did not pay off for the company.

No Caption Provided

Guillemot also said it was ZombiU's underwhelming performance that led the publisher to decide to release Rayman Legends as a multiplatform game instead of a Wii U-exclusive.

In May, Ubisoft Montpellier creative director Jean-Philippe Caro said the studio was at work on a ZombiU 2 prototype, though firm details were not disclosed.

GameSpot has reached out to Ubisoft for additional comment or clarification on Guillemot's remarks and the status of the ZombiU franchise moving forward.

Electronic Arts chief operating officer Peter Moore is also quoted in the GamesIndustry International report, saying the Wii U has been a "disappointment" thus far. No new titles are in development for the system, he confirmed.

"We were there with four games for them [at launch]," he says. "It's been a disappointment when you look at sell-through and, as a company, we have to be very judicious where we deploy our resources."

By comparison, EA supported the original Wii with 78 titles through the system's lifespan. Moore also pointed out that a lack of interest in online functionality among Wii U users is a reason EA is staying away from the platform.

"The lack of online engagement that we see on Wii U [is troubling]," Moore said. "It's so integral to what we do. They're so small it's hardly worth running the servers. It seems like a box that's out of sync with the future of EA - which is one that gives a real social feel to our games. The Wii U feels like an offline experience right now."

The Wii U has officially sold 3.45 million units worldwide. Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said last month that "We are to blame" for poor Wii U sales, noting marketing efforts have not done enough to explain why the system is compelling.

sofar the 3-4 most sold game on the Wii U (even with that horrible cover and bad PR)... and Ubisoft wont make a sequel??...., sure it was bundled had more time to sell than other games..

but with 0.56mio, it's got a fan base almost like Demon's Souls... (and they don't have to start from scratch, when making ZombiU2..)

=> but if they decided to make it, they had better make it into a "singleplayer" game.... (maybe it will come out "late" like Red steel 2 did.. but then we can only hope, they really put some effort into ZombiU2..., unlike with RS2...)

ZombiU is still one of the most sold game on the wii U (even if it was bundled..)

=> Ubisoft and/or Nintendo should push for this game/franchise.., it could become something like Demon's Souls, which didn't sell that much either.. but layed the foundation for great frachise and one of the most hyped games of 2014..... => AND Ubisoft, should realise, that ZombU (besides others, like Demon's Souls, Metro and Last of Us) has started a "horror/thriller" surivival boom, with many similar games comming 2014... and ZombiU should be "leading" them!!..

=> besides the bad PR and (bloody) bad game cover of ZombiU (a few reasons for the bad selling), Ubisoft is also not realising the potential the game/franchise has.. (with a bit more PR), it could become the new "Dead Space" or "Dark Souls" with "Zombies" Franchise....

=> Ubisoft should rethink ZombiU, the Game sold well for a "Wii U" game, damn it.., if needed, make it a "mulitplatfom" game, just bring ZombU2 (and keep it a "single player" game.. "fear" works best, when playing alone in a dark enviroment, without destraction...)

or Nintendo should prove to us "core" game lovers, that Nintendo really is taking us serious, and help finance ZombiU2.. , the game is like a raw franchise diamond, that need's a some time to creat/cut into something briliant...,

if neither Ubisoft nor Nintendo can see that, than they're "market analysis" is worthless... (nowonder, Ubisoft only brings AC, AC, AC , and between times SP and... whild Nintendo only brings Mario, Mario, Mario and between times Zelda...and they're oversaturatng the market with they're own games.. .)

some (new) franchises need time to get a fan base and develop into epical stuff (and for a game like ZombiU, with such a short devlopement time, and for Wii U Game sales, it's not tha bad...)

What's the deal? First 2 paragraphs states ZombiU is disappointing. 3rd paragraph then states the they are developing a ZombiU sequel prototype. So, why think about developing a sequel if the game was not successful? Perhaps it did better than expected. And how did it suddenly jump from Ubisoft to EA? The headline talks about ZombiU! What's EA got to do with this?

I personally thought this was a great game for the Wii U. The motion detector, the use of the inventory, the map, the scanner and the sniper rifle were wonderful ways the gamepad was implemented. I understand that this game was shot down by the big gamer sites, but the gamers overall rated this game pretty high.

I hope they do come out with a sequel. In my opinion, this was a great first release for the Wii U.

Focus on quality, not quantity. We can't play all of the games anyway.

People are not dumb. That's why Wii U is not compelling.

It seems anything with the "U" letter is going down(Wii U, Zombie U, U draw <these all make a big lost so far).

Upon first glance, I thought they had something special on their hands with the Wii U and this Zombi U game. I was kind of excited. Upon reading reviews, I was saddened a bit for Nintendo. Hell I grew up with em. I love Nintendo, they paved the way for all these other giants we love. I hope they pick it up and continue giving us some cutting edge game play. I am kind of tempted to buy a Wii-U for this game and some good ole Zelda, despite the negative reviews. Anyone out there actually like it their Wii-U and Zombi-U?

@erix43 While I wouldn't consider a WiiU (at this point), I agree that this game looked cool. I would have liked this better then DI I think. The fact that people said it was challenging makes me believe I would like it even more. They should re-release on another platform (put on screen radar or something in the corner to replace the screen on the gamepad) and I would buy it.

The giants of the gaming industry are better off sticking to the major platforms, dedicated handheld gaming is fast becoming a thing of the past, with Mobile phones taking over the niche more easily.

People are less inclined to go out and buy a WiiU, razers edge or the nividia shield etc The large majority of people will feel the need to purchase and carry a mobile phone around with them, with developers pushing tech and games at them where ever they go, there just isnt the need for over priced handhelds with limited game selections. I wish they would realise this and get away from it altogether, they look at developers making shitloads of cash out of mobile phone users and want a piece of that pie, unfortunately the products you are offering aren't going to compete with that.

I'm not even diving into a taste debate here but dear Ubisoft, next time at least try delivering a polished new IP instead of ZombiU. You might find the whole situation a lot different, no? Heck, if they had a Red Steel 3 at launch I bet it would sell and I'm not even talking just about the game but the console itself!

Next, on GameSpot, another lame excuse to not support the WiiU.

I watched Robbaz's play through and was bored to tears (well, if it weren't for the fact that Robbaz is such a badass).

I'm sick to death (see what I did there) with the whole damn genre. Am I the only one that would be overjoyed if I never saw another zombie game/movie/tv show ever get made again?

Watch the movie "Things To Come" if you want to see the original zombie movie....

Funny thing is, I would've bought Dead Space 3 if it had local co-op instead of just online.

But oh no, it's either play with people on an internet connection who you can't hang out with or just play alone with a (presumed) dumb-as-nails AI partner. Yeah okay.

@THE_DRUGGIE To Dead Space 3's credit, it really does a good job of not sticking you with a partner. It's not RE5.

You can say what you want about the WiiU's failure, but as soon as Nintendo starts coming up with the really good first party games this can turn around quickly.
I think it's too far behind to be on par with the PS4 and the Xboner and they haven't explained properly the system to the casual crowd, but it can still be profitable for Nintendo.

@19James89 As of right now, no.
However, Nintendo has always survived despite the odds and I'm curious to see what they can pull off to pick up the situation.

They are the only surviving console manufacturer of the 80's for some reason, no? I think they deserve some credit.

@19James89 At the end of the Wii cycle we have seen pretty good JRPGs coming out, so I think we can expect something good coming out.

About Bomberman, if I'm not wrong, the franchise belongs to Konami now, and they don't seem keen on developing it any further. It would be nice to get a Bomberman in the vibe of the early 90's classics instead of the trash that followed after.

Fingers crossed! :)

@kagentoI'm hoping they'll release a Bomberman game. Bomberman U would be nice as would a new IP, something new and a new Pokemon title wouldn't go a miss.

Maybe try and get an RPG game out as well without the repitition of Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate. (Yes, I know MH3 is not a Nintendo title).

@sozoshu They've ruined Dead Space by making one too many games for it. I'm half-way through Dead Space 3 and I'm bored of it, I can't wait to finish it. Dead Space and Dead Space 2 were good and the story surrounding Issac Clarke and the Markers should have spanned over two games. EA do what most major publishers/developers do and that's over-milk their franchises.

Peter Moore is a complete idiot if he didn't know that Nintendo's audience is not that interested in zombies. Perhaps one of them ate his brain.

This will only discourage more big third party developers from investing in the Wii U. If Bayonetta 2 fails then expect all third party developers to drop that system What an unbelievable flop this system has turned into starting with the confusing name which casual gamers think is just another peripheral rather than a new system. What makes it worse is that casual gamers are their main target too. Then there's the ridiculous price where for $50 more you could get a PS4 with real next gen graphics, internet, smarttv, and blu ray. Releasing a bunch of stupid games from the past with upgraded graphics like Donkey Kong Country or another Mario side scroller isn't going to help. Nintendo needs to hire a ton of people and make Mario 64 with HD graphics and a Zelda game that looks like the demo they used to showcase the system by this holiday or more and more third party developers are going to drop them, which means less and less people will buy their system. This becomes a vicious cycle and a death spiral for Nintendo. Even if they have a major hit game in two years, it might be too late for gamers to even care anymore.

@plm3d_basic You slate Nintendo for rehashing the same old games, even though Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is a completely new DK platformer and then you suggest that Nintendo remake Mario 64 with HD graphics.

Pardon me for not taking your opinion seriously when you come out with such billy goats gruff.

Mario 64 is a term I used to describe a Mario game that is not a side scroller and is a fully 3-d world like Mario 64. Most people would be able to figure that out. A side scroller is not a system seller.

@The_Beanster Expensive games? I would like to know how much money Ubisoft used for ZombiU compared to something like Assassin's Creed or The Last Of Us. Let's not forget ZombiU was a launch title and Nintendo only has New Super Mario Bros. and Nintendo Land on WiiU so far when it comes to first party titles. What were they expecting? Stop the bullcrap EA and Ubi, once Nintendo starts selling like the Wii you'll be back like a dog after its bone! Money suckers...

The Wii U should focus on kids and family games. Games like zombies and Bayonetta should not be in that console.

I'm surprised to see some exclusives where they shouldn't be. I bet Bayonetta will be the next one to fail.
