Ubisoft Australia today announced the launch of a local version of its online sales service shop, UbiShop.

The redesigned site--already operating in France, Germany, the UK, and the US--will allow Aussie gamers to purchase downloadable versions of the full catalogue of Ubisoft PC titles. The publisher has stated that it plans to expand this service in the future to include a boxed console and PC titles, as well as merchandise.

Chad Acers from Ubisoft Australia told GameSpot AU that while the local site is only two weeks behind its international counterparts, the publisher has used this time to localise offers and pricing.

"The shop has actually been available to consumers for quite a while, but we haven’t told anybody about it because we wanted to get the Aussie version up and running, complete with the final offer we have just announced," Acers said.

As part of the site's local launch, Ubisoft is offering Aussie customers a free "budget" game with any full-price purchase. These titles will include Assassin's Creed, Beyond Good & Evil, Far Cry, Heroes of Might and Magic V, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2, and Silent Hunter III.

The offer will be valid from today until June 14, 2010.

Agreed @illmatic87 Hows the authentication problems going for those here in the AU that actually bought Ubi's latest "games"? Still having issues? Good to see where Ubisoft's priorities are.

'Localised prices' - hahahaha just call it what it is - more expensive prices. I'll continue to import, thanks.

"Localise offers and pricing" - nice delayed start. taking advantage of our inflated game prices eh Ubisoft? But whoever predicted that green initiative push by Ubisoft was nothing short of a move to DD back in Ozspot (I think it was the smart one; Dan), you're a winner. Looks like they want to push their own DRM rather than just apply Valves/Stardocks or whatever other (reasonable) DRM that is already available. Ubisoft have 2 faces.. the Sloppy-Port-DRM-delay-beyond-good&evil2- UbiShop angry face, Or the RUSE-beta-was-awesome-save-WorldInConflict-devs--Anno1404-Settlers7-PC-exclusive happy face.

You'd think offering products direct to the consumer with virtually zero disribution costs and no middlemen would reduce the price, but no, it actually goes up. Here's a wonderful example: Current prices for Assassin's Creed II: EB Games (physical copy), Aus$49.97. On Steam, US$59.99. On Ubishop, Aus$89.99 I've tried, I've tried really, really hard. But I just can't come up with the words to describe just how wrong the Ubishop concept is.

Ubisoft - Do us all a favor and just leave the PC community alone. You have failed us one too many times. We don't want your consolised/bastardised intepretations of the franchises we once loved and we certainly don't want your draconian DRM. We also aren't stupid enough to be buying games from you directly, when we can get them for a fraction of the cost almost anywhere else (as shani states, this won't even make a dent in the Steam sales). Stick to the console market - They're more likely to throw money away.

Wait wait wait... what's this? Is it something that will probably get me cheaper games? Is it something where you can download your purchased games to any computer you'd want? Is it something which offers ridiculous sales on great games regularly? Is it called STEAM, perhaps?
