Two Key BioWare Leads Leave The Studio

Casey Hudson and Mark Darrah are retiring to make way for a new generation of developers.

BioWare's Casey Hudson (general manager) and Mark Darrah (Dragon Age: Inquisition executive producer) are retiring from the studio to make way for a new wave of creators. Hudson will be replaced by interim general manager Gary McKay (senior director of development operations) and Darrah's role will be filled by Christian Dailey (BioWare Austin studio director).

"It's not an easy decision to make, and big changes like this always come with a certain degree of sadness," Hudson wrote in a farewell post on the BioWare blog. "I will miss being able to work every day with our inspiring developers on the biggest and most exciting projects I can imagine. But I also know that this is a good time for a change, for both myself and BioWare."

Now Playing: Mass Effect Legendary Edition Teaser Trailer

Darrah echoed Hudson's sentiment, saying he's confident in BioWare's pedigree as a studio and is certain the Dragon Age series will live on without him spearheading development.

"This has been a very difficult decision for me," Darrah wrote in his farewell statement. "The team of amazing developers on Dragon Age, make my life fuller and better. They have taught me so much. But the strength of the team is also what makes this possible. I know that Dragon Age won't just survive without me, it will thrive."

Darrah and Hudson have been with BioWare for over 20 years, with Darrah working as a lead programmer on the Baldur's Gate series and Hudson starting as a technical artist on MDK2. Hudson would eventually become creative director on the original three Mass Effect games. Writer Mac Walters took over as director for Mass Effect Andromeda.

Hudson had previously left BioWare in August 2014, after which he joined Microsoft Studios (now Xbox Game Studios) as creative director in May 2015. After a brief stint at Microsoft, Hudson returned to BioWare in July 2017 as general manager, replacing Aaryn Flynn.

BioWare recently unveiled the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, which bundles the first three Mass Effect games and spruces them up with better resolutions and higher frame rates. This package launches in Spring 2021. The studio is hard-at-work on another Mass Effect entry.

The studio also confirmed that Dragon Age 4 is currently in development but didn't share any details about the game, including an estimated release window or targeted launch platforms.

BioWare is also still toiling away at Anthem, which is currently being overhauled to "reinvent the core gameplay loop," according to Hudson. This 2.0 version of Anthem (effectively called Anthem Next) is still coming, but the studio said the redesign is going to be a long process.

Anthem pretty much buried the studio and it's a miracle it's still operational tbh. I did hear that there was some other super-duper project the Bioware team was working on but I doubt it will end up being another 5 years of total wasted time and the money pit it ended up being but Casey's departure is no big deal, since he was one of the top personal steering the cluster that was Anthem anyway. The glory days of Mass Effect are well and truly behind him. Switch the light off on the way out please.

Can we just get games made by people who like playing good games? People who don't care about the newest SJW trend?

Good. Hudson's departure (for the second time) was long overdue. I won't shed any tears there. Bioware, as a company, has been creatively bankrupt since EA took over.

You have to love hating the fact that the new EA RPG projects always start with, " [Blank], who is a key developer leaves the project."

And BioWare is officially dead. The return of Casey Hudson brought back the light at the end of the tunnel. And we can only hope that in his two and a half years, he was able to make an impact (he did at least on DA4 because they rebooted the development shortly after his return) to leave the last couple of games in development with good direction.

@zerojuice: Casey "you won't be able to say you got ending a b or c" Hudson was part of the problem with Bioware. He was a lying sack of corporate garbage. Good Riddance.

Tbh BioWare hasn’t been the same for a decade now, they’ve been working under the worst games they’ve ever produced..... I’m not sad to see anyone leave the studio any more.

“I made so much money, I don’t know where I’ll spend it all.”, said Darrah.

“Being a slug for a giant videogame corporation might sound fun, but at the end of every day you still realize you’re really ruining the industry.”, said Hudson.

Sounds good to me. Time to “retire” kiddos.

Looks like Hudson realized what he got himself into and that there's no saving the company, so he's decided to flee the boat before it's too late. But of course they gotta say some nice things about "trusting fully into the new generation" and crap like that. The generation that brought us games like ME Andromeda and Anthem.

“New generation of developers”, with other words hiring “studios” (if you can call it that) in India and other cheap labour nations for the main work, but themselves taking all the credit while having countless meetings in how to implement in-game cosmetics crap for extra money, deliver an unfinished game while making season passes and other DLCs along the way, nah, I know exactly where this is headed.....more 💰💰💰for the shareholders, less 🎮🎮🎮 for the gamers.

@phili878: In the second line of the article that you did not bother to read before rushing to the comments:

"Hudson will be replaced by interim general manager Gary McKay (senior director of development operations) and Darrah's role will be filled by Christian Dailey (BioWare Austin studio director)."

@Warlord_Irochi: I referring to the new generation of developers part, did you even bother to read it? I don’t refer to the experienced guys from other projects filling a temporary role until things get “squared away” after the management change.

@phili878: What money? Did you see how Bioware's last 2 games turned out? At this point it's higly likely that they'll be shut down if the coming up Dragon Age game won't magically put them back on track again. And I have zero hopes for that as the old Bioware clearly doesn't seem to exist anymore.

The leadership has been the problem for a long while. Burning the whole thing to the ground and building up is pretty much all that could save them at this point. ...Or rather, just above the ground. The actual ground floor devs and employees have never been the problem. That said, I doubt the disruptive elements in the company will ever be rooted out. Bioware needs strong leadership and a profound respect for their employees in order to succeed, and I just don't see them getting that. It's sad, but we're all just watching the long, disquiet demise of a studio that was once great and has long since lost it's way.

@cetaepsilon: I laughed when I read that. These two aren’t even devs. They’re corporate slugs who suck up a huge paycheck.

I'm happy for the Mass Effect Trilogy remaster, but I don't see where this team is going otherwise. I hope the remaster is good.
