Twitch Introduces And Then Removes Culturally Insensitive Custom Emotes

The company landed in hot water after debuting emotes with cultural stereotypes for Hispanic Heritage month.

In a Twitch blog post now edited to remove the announcement, the platform introduced new customized emote modifiers--which included sombreros, guitars, and rumba shakers--in celebration of Hispanic Heritage month. The exact text from screenshots still floating around reads, "Use a customized sub emote to show support for your favorite Hispanic and LatinX streamer."

Needless to say, some members of the gaming community thought the images were insensitive cultural stereotypes and cliche depictions of Hispanic and LatinX cultures.

However, shortly after people on the internet criticized Twitch's poorly thought-out emotes, the blog post was scrubbed of the announcement. Twitch then posted on Twitter apologizing for its actions and the images' insensitivity. The platform has removed the emote modifiers.

The platform has landed in hot water before for insensitive actions. Twitch's Black Lives Matter video featured very few Black streamers and mostly featured white streamers, much to the chagrin of Twitter users, who took issue with the fact that Twitch was advocating for Black Twitch streamers, but not showing or promoting any in the video.

Twitch is also currently testing ads that can run in the middle of streams, a move that has so far been highly unpopular among much of Twitch's audience. Both viewers and streamers have asked Twitch to not move forward with the feature.

In response to replies from concerned Twitch users, the company made sure to emphasize that the new ads are a test, and not permanently implemented. It remains to be seen how Twitch will pacify its user base and keep mid-roll ads.

So... Hats and musical instruments of historical cultural significance are now "Culturally Insensitive" and their inclusion in cultural celebration is now offensive?

Sadly, it seems like folks are just too sensitive these days for their own good and will arbitrarily label just about anything as racist, stereotypical, discriminatory, or in this case Culturally Insensitive. I honestly cannot imagine just how empty these folks lives must be when they seemingly seek reasons to be offended until they inevitably find them.

The worst part about this is that there was really no way around it. If Twitch had done nothing at all to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month or whatever, then folks would be accusing them of being racist and excluding them right now. Society has become a toxic minefield which hampers freedom of speech, freedom of expression, and freedom of thought. It's a society made up of the most phony people imaginable because nowadays it's just too dangerous to be yourself, so you've got to adopt a politically correct persona who simultaneously loves and accepts everything yet can turn on a dime and start hating the same things on demand, a puppet of mob mentality.

Now go on, puppets... Tell me how I am the villain for saying this! It's all any of you know how to do anymore, isn't it? Dance! And whatever you do, don't stop to question who pulls your strings. Get angry! Destroy! Set the world ablaze in the name of justice based on a flawed ideology that no two people can even agree upon and call the chaos which you sow progressive. Or drop your torches and pitchforks, question the convictions that drive you, recognize the chaos, segregation, and hatred you've helped to create in the name of peace, equality, and love.

To the people screeching about SJWs: nobody was really offended by this. There was no big reaction of anger or pulling out pitchforks against Twitch over these emotes. People simply pointed out that the emotes weren’t good at representing Hispanic culture, maybe a bit insensitive, and that Twitch should try and do better than that.

@saturatedbutter: When people "simply point out" in these situations, it's a veiled threat. Twitch nipped it in the bud, because they knew the pitchforks were next.

I think my favorite part of this story is that they replaced the emotes with... nothing. So big win for Hispanic Heritage.

Just imagine an Arrested Development gif right here as we celebrate our "Mexican friends from Colombia".

Thinking that all Latinos are Mexican is beyond dumb, but pushing that "X" nonsense is just an affront to language.

When has it now been politically-incorrect to use "Latino" and instead use the non-Spanish word "LatinX"? Anything wrong with a foreign word that ends with an "o"? And what is with the use of Hispanic in one sentence, but Latino in the second? Do both have the same meaning? No! Hispanic refers to a person of Latin American descent and especially of Cuban, Mexican, or Puerto Rican origin living in the United States. A Latino (short for "latinoamericano" [Latin American]) is a native or inhabitant of Latin America (which also includes Portugese-speaking Brazil), or a person of Latin American origin living in the United States. All Hispanics are Latinos, but not all Latinos (including Brazilians who speak Portugese) are Hispanics. The differences between the terms are clear.

Also another concern: why is the first letter in "Black" capitalized, while "white" is not? Should both the first letter of both "black" and "white" be capitalized? A double standard?

@onesiphorus: It's white liberals trying to tell Spanish speaking people how their language should work. Plenty of their words are designed with prefixes referring to males or females. Like Latino = male, Latina = female. This is just one of many examples.

Now, some non-Spanish speaking people have deemed this offensive. Hence the broad, general term - Latinx. A term, in which, no Latino's are referring to themselves as. Certainly not in Latino countries.

I say it's downright arrogant, English speaking people trying to tell those of other cultures how their language should work, and that it should focus around their understanding. It's almost reminiscent of Colonial behaviour where we forced minorities to adopt our ways of thinking, but we thought ourselves higher. Funny how leftish Liberalism often results in oppression.

OMGGGGGGGG this isn't real.

Twitch then posted on Twitter apologizing for its actions and the images' insensitivity.

If there is a god, please send us your worst storms, snow, earthquakes etc.... we need to thin the herd. This is ridiculous.

Y'all always assume it's a group of people screaming about an issue, when really Twitch made a mistake, people pointed it out and they apologised and walked it back.

It only feels like a big issue ecause the media is reporting on it. Get some perspective and calm down.

@Dawg9000: Use whatever you like. I don't care because I am an individual, and thus I don't expect emoji to be capable of defining who I am, but then again, the color of my skin doesn't define me either. Imagine that.

@Dawg9000: If we really want to get technical (which judging from your posts, you do) White is a race, like Black or Asian. Hispanic isn't, and is far more stricter in its criteria. So poor example of comparison.

It's like saying, what's an European emoji? And I could bring up a medieval looking castle to illustrate my point.

@duron2: It's such a huge, umbrella term that it's actually impossible to designate an emoji that sums it up. Hence why our minds always go to our most well known example of it, which is Mexican for many americans. Mexicans are Hispanic after all, and a Mexican icon is technically a Hispanic icon.

What Twitch did wrong was only designating Mexican icons to represent everything. Lol, oops. But it was only for the reason that I first above. It shows they're not innately familiar with other Hispanic cultures.

Every cultural celebration can be viewed as insensitive if not done by the people from that culture.

If we're going to be this close minded then don't whine about being a subject of discrimination. How do you expect the others to understand your culture if you're going to be such a bitch about it?

If this backlash is coming from the same people who are trying to force the word 'Latinx' then it's not at all coming from actual Latino people, or Hispanics.

Kinda getting sick of white liberals speaking over actual minority groups, telling the world what they want. Like these new stupid terms that keep popping up, for instance.

@nabinator: "Actual Latino people", what? Latino people are literally people from Latin America, Brazilians are Latino but not Hispanic. Why? Look it up before you make a further ass of yourself. LatinX are just for homos who can't deal with the fact that EVERY noun in the language is masculine/feminine. Regardless of all that I just said, it's ridiculous to think everyone who isn't Mexican would appreciate literal Mexican heritage being attached to their own.

@Dawg9000: I suppose, but it feels weird that you can't include mexican heritage in hispanic heritage. Hispanic heritage is such a vague thing it's kind of insulting in its own way, like if we celebrated "european" or "asian" heritage...

Really? I doubt this actually offends them. I don't get all hurt when someone accuses me of being a redneck or a hillbilly. I'm certain the vast majority of Latinos have the same ability to shrug stuff off. I could be wrong, but I think the offended crowd are just very vocal and websites like Gamespot give them all the attention they crave. Good job Gamespot.
