Transformers Director Michael Bay to Return for Fifth Movie

Bay confirms that this will be his last one. Again.

Michael Bay is returning to direct the fifth film in the Transformers series. Although the director had previously suggested that 2014's Transformers: Age of Extinction would be his last one, the director has now confirmed that he will be back for the next film, to be released in 2017.

In an interview with Rolling Stone to promote his latest movie, the war drama 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi, Bay explained why he would direct Transformers 5. "I still have a great time," he said. "It's fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else."

When reminded that he had made this promise before, Bay said: "I know. JJ [Abrams] told me, 'You're the only guy that could do this.' But it's time to move on. One more."

In October last year, Hasbro Studios revealed that a further four Transformers movies were planned. Hasbro president Steven J. Davis explained that a team of writers had "plotted out the next 10 years of Transformers." He added: "Similarly, we are doing the same in television and in digital. So stay tuned, Transformers 5 is on its way, and 6 and 7 and 8."

In total, the four previous Transformers movies have earned more than $3.7 billion worldwide. Age of Extinction saw Mark Wahlberg take over as the lead actor, and he will return for Transformers 5.

I'd rather have a video game company do the movie cause they seemed to be doing a better job. Pick from the ones that did Fall of Cybertron or that recent Devastation game.

That last TF: Extinction movie feels it was just put out there for the heck of it.

Another movie I won't be watching. I wonder if theaters are going bankrupt yet...Oh wait. They probably made up quite a lot with the "A New Hope" reboot.

Theres just no point anymore. Might as well start looking at popular non-North American films for movie entertainment.

Liked 1 and 3. Here's hoping to see Jetfire or Aerialbot's Superion in the next one. I want to see Unicron, too.

@gamist: Yeah 1 and 3 were pretty enjoyable. 2 was absolute garbage, and 4 started off ok, then got strange by the end. Also they randomly killed off Ratchet right at the start 4 for no real reason.

Transformers 2, 3, 4 are the worst quality yet the highest gross ratio of any movie ever.

Idk about this. Would like to see someone else direct a Transformers movie for a change. By the way if anyone is looking for the Collector's Edition of Transformer's Age of Extinction on Blue Ray, it's on Amazon for $25 on sale (regular $99). Comes with the collector's statue. :)

I enjoy all the Transformers movies [besides Transformers 2] and this is old news that Micheal Bay would return to do more so I don't know why this is new news when GS already reported like months ago.

Nice. I really enjoy his movies myself and thought the Transformers movies were mostly pretty good.

Michael Bay teaming up with Akiva Goldsman? This is literally my worst nightmare. This might just be the single worst movie ever made.

@nparks: Goldsman wrote A Beautiful Mind (which got him an Oscar), I Am Legend and Winter's Tale. He's got more than a few great movies under his belt. Bay is just cinematic abortion though.

@game_overdose54: A Beautiful Mind and I Am Legend were not great movies. Not even good ones. Not to mention his work on such memorable disasters as Lost in Space and the really terrible Batman movies. He's mainly notable as the guy Hollywood goes to when they need an adaptation that totally spits on the source material in favor of churning out generic schlock instead.

Explosions. They will be everywhere. I expect at least seven in the opening 43 seconds.

This is like the least kept secret. We pretty much knew he was going to be around for the 5th.

Now, question is... although it made bazillions at the box office, can it actually get critical acclaim, or will it just be "explosive CGI trash" again?

I enjoyed it, but many say it's just brainless, plotless robots fighting with a hot girl thrown in slow motion for good measure.

@DawgByte2:

And what most say is true. These films are all pretty bad imo.

Then again... we're talking about Michael Bay, the man isn't known to direct great films anyway...

A team of writers has already plotted the next ten years of these movies..? Aside from every other flaw of these films, the thing that bothers me the most (literally makes me cringe) is the writing.. I cannot stand how jumpy and twitchy the conversations are. It's not crushing my childhood or anything, cause its just a silly movie.. but good god that writing, so processed, no creativity. Oh well a good redbox rental someday.

Goddammit, the man single handily was able to **** up a franchise of movies where robots punch each other. How is that even possible? And now he's directing another?

@RogerioFM: I thought the first one was pretty good, suspension of belief and all. The sequels were just awful and tacky imo.

@aftershave219: the first and third are alright (apart from the megan fox replacement in the 3rd, her acting is so bad it makes megan fox look oscar worthy)

But after the 4th....... that was just terrible (apart from marky mark ofc)

You'd think giant robots blowing each other up would make for fun, dumb action movies, but Transformers just never gets it right. They've all sucked so far. : \

The franchise is getting a little stale but still visually pretty awesome and holds up well over the years. I'm hoping the conclusion of the series won't disappoint!
