Torment Sequel Getting Physical Retail Edition

Dead Island and Dying Light developer Techland's new publishing outfit is behind the upcoming game.

A week after Dying Light developer Techland announced the formation of a publishing label, the company today announced a partnership with inXile Entertainment to publish the physical retail version of Torment: Tides of Numenera.

This news comes less than 24 hours after inXile announced that the PC RPG was delayed to Q1 2017, which means it will be out in the January-March window. Tides of Numenera was originally expected to come out in 2015, before moving to 2016 and then again to 2017.

Tides of Numenera is the first game Techland will publish under its new publishing division, Techland Publishing, but it won't be the last (more on that later). A specific release date for the game has not been announced.

It was also confirmed today that the physical retail edition of Tides of Numenera will include "a number of physical and digital bonuses that will ease players into the unique world of Numenera and further increase their immersion in the story." No further specifics have been provided.

When Techland announced its publishing division last week, the company said it would release two "major multiplatform titles" every year. In addition to these, it will distribute four titles digitally each year.

As for why Tides of Numenera was delayed, inXile said it's partially the result of needing more time to complete the localization process.

"We know it's frustrating to wait a little longer, but we've come this far," inXile's Brian Fargo explained at the time. "These types of trade-offs are never easy, but from day one it's been our goal to make Torment the masterpiece you deserve."

This is also probably the reason ToN got delayed till sometimes next year, if you are going to release a console retail version you do not want to dilute the excitement or buzz by releasing a computer version or any platform first. The spiritual successor to "Final Fantasy Tactics" was delayed well beyond the promised crowd funding release dates- many of which had nothing to do with development of the game but poor business decisions. I empathize with those that requested refunds.

Kind of a step backward, but I'm for any distribution mechanism that puts more of the excellent Torment lore into more people's hands.

@eva02langley: Yeah W2 was pretty good once it made it Wasteland 2: Director's Cut. By the way your icon - is that from a very old game called Lunar Silver star or an anime tv show?

@arcanesmile: Ah yes, i remember her now, it is like seeing a face in the crowd from 20 yrs ago. Pinnacle of anime when it came out and still a masterpiece. But for me, i preferred less violent, more comedy Tenchi Muyo.

For a second there, I thought they meant Deep Silver and I was like "OH GOD!!!".

Techland did a great job with Dying Light, so I don't think there will be any problems.

@Barighm: this game is already in it's finishing stages of development, which has been handled by inXile. a new publisher, even if it was Deep Silver, normally wouldn't have any effect on the game design itself. inXile has brought us some pretty good games and the short taste of Tides of Numenera that was released was already great.

...supposed to be another huge update to the Early Access content this week!..
