Titanfall 2 Dev Talks Game's Future, Says Star Wars Game Staying Under Wraps For Now

Titanfall 2 is "healthy and growing," Respawn says.

In a blog post today, Titanfall 2 developer Respawn talked about the future of Titanfall, addressed its communication shortcomings, and stressed that you shouldn't expect to hear anything about its Star Wars game soon.

On the subject of Titanfall 2, which publisher EA said failed to meet sales targets, Respawn said in its blog post that the game is "healthy and growing." It's adding more players every week, the developer said, though no official figures were shared. Looking ahead, fans can expect more free DLC for Titanfall 2, while Respawn is tinkering with ideas for future games in the series.

No Caption Provided

"Right now we're focused on the long term future of Titanfall and we're excited about it," Respawn explained. "The core Titanfall team is working away on lots of cool stuff, whether that be DLC for Titanfall 2, action blocks, and prototypes for future Titanfall projects, or other crazy science experiments."

For Titanfall 2 DLC specifically, Respawn admitted that it did not do a good enough job at communicating what the game's free expansions were all about. Most recently, Respawn launched a new mode called Live Fire; past DLC included a new version of the Angel City map.

"This is something that we will get better at and the studio remains committed to supporting Titanfall 2 with free content as well as new Prime Titans, store items, and more," Respawn said.

The developer will make specific announcements about future Titanfall 2 DLC on March 23, while, at some point in April, the studio will talk about what fans can expect "over the next few months."

There are ongoing Titanfall projects outside of Respawn, including games that are in the works at Nexon, one of which is a free-to-play version of Titanfall for Korea. Nexon's first Titanfall game, the free-to-play mobile title Titanfall: Frontlines, was canceled before it even left beta. More mobile games set in the Titanfall universe are in the works at Nexon and they will be announced "in the near future."

Outside of the Titanfall franchise, Respawn is working on a third-person Star Wars action game that's being directed by God of War veteran Stig Asmussen.

"That project is still wrapped in secrecy and we won't be talking about it for a while," Respawn said.

Finally, Respawn announced that it is launching efforts to communicate better with the community through efforts like a video series and blog posts from developers.

"Our goal is to start providing regular content that gives more insight into the people and work they do at Respawn and give a more satisfying feedback loop to players so that their voices feel heard," Respawn said.

What would you like to see from Titanfall 2 and Respawn in general in the future? Let us know in the comments below!

This game deserves a lot more credit than it's getting. The new live fire mode is great, kind of bring back the feel I had when I played destiny trials of Osiris, gets your heart pumping.

Campaign was great and ending really had me. Multiplayer is superb, livefire, last titan standing and attrition are the best.

It's sad that EA used this game to slow down CoD sales and released it a week after Battlefield 1, jokes on them, I play this more than I play Battlefield 1 now.

Good game/bad timing. They need to update that aging engine. They should use the Fronstbite engine since EA has already been implementing it into the majority of their games. Madden is getting frostbite this year and so should Titanfall.

Not a huge fan of this- feels way too similar to CoD which I find to be complete trash (pretty sure it shares same engine)... tho I do play this on occasion but not my go to game. If TF2 used Frostbite 3 engine, I'd play this sooooo much more.

They did do it right by having free dlc. That helps keep the community together and was one of the main reasons I ended up buying it.

And the customizations are awesome.

@heydink: Titanfall is designed to be accessible for CoD players, but it's actually quite different when you look at the mobility options; wall running, boost jumping, grappling hook etc (yes, some recent CoDs have those things, but only as gimmicks that aren't really integrated into the gameplay). Also... there's the Titans, which aren't a CoD thing.

Titanfall 2 runs on Source, NOT the same engine as CoD (modified idtech 9 or something)

@tarheelsforever: Ah yesh you're right.

Could have sworn it was Frostbite, since EA has been having lots of their other studios use it, and there's a "shiny" quality to Titanfall 2's graphics that makes it look more like a recent Battlefield than like Titanfall 1

all mp games like bf1 and titanfall should have a play for free multiplayer option to increase the player base, the more gamers in a mp game the better and this games already have microtransactions. those that want, can buy the game full price and the rest can play the multiplayer part only for free and buy microtransactions or buy the full game later. people that buy the game have more people to play with and closer to where they live which will give them better connections, less lag, less waiting for player...and devs will get more money. it´s a win win.

quake champions is doing this model and in my opinion all aaa mp games should do the same.

There is no "problem"w/ TF2. Game is fun as heck, love the titans and ability to play with or without the AI fodder. As a shooter goes and functions it's top notch. Maps are great, weapons feel great, love how fluid the movement and shooting are. Every match feels action packed and pulling off a kill streak makes you look and feel totally BA. The gimmick of trying to escape after a loss is fun, exciting and brilliant and success can make a loss feel, well like not actually losing. I will play this till no one is in the lobbies. Hey don't like it, GREAT! Go play something else .

@tarheelsforever: game engine is way too old. If they used Frostbite 3 I'd be playing this 1,000x more. The graphics are sharp but the animations are crap and deaths are pre-canned from 2001.

the main problem with TF2 is that the "no season pass", and "all maps, modes, and weapons are free" philosophy has actually translated into hardly any DLC at all. i would have much rather paid for a season pass or individual map packs and gotten a good amount of new maps and content any day. without a regular release of a decent amount of content (especially new maps), any FPS will die. people are bored and tired of playing the same maps over and over. it's as simple as that.

@tarheelsforever: More Season Passes? No thank you! There are too many games out there to warrant the additional cost. This year I waited to see if I really liked the game and waited for sales of the Season Pass to actually buy it. You buy additional content that is useless after a year. Single player content like that released for The Witcher gives you more bang for your buck.

@tarheelsforever: paid dlc would kill and split the already smaller community.

I literally bought this game because I heard the dlc would be free.

@heydink: that was also one of the key reasons i bought this game. but now im asking myself "where exactly is the free DLC we were supposed to get?" sure, we got angel city remastered, livefire with 2 mode specific maps, and colony remastered on the way, but that is not nearly enough "free DLC" to keep most players interested. now i think without a doubt that i most definitely would have rather paid for DLC so i could get some proper expansion packs. im sorry, but in this case, free content means very little content.

I really enjoyed Titanfall - was a great MP experience, not sure why the changed the formula - saying that the MP for Titanfall 2 isn't too different there's just something missing - The 1st Game was a buzz to play online !

As someone who played TF 1 a lot, I have to say the multiplayer is huge disappointment. I played the beta and like many others I absolutely hated the battery system and lack of shield. The sparse map also doesn't help.

@sentry: agreed, TitanFail 2 is worlds apart from the original and is Weak. but Respawn is going to listen to the casual minority, release Titanfall 3 years from now in the spring, its still going to sell horribly and fanboys are gonna have to find a new excuse for its Abysmal sales.

I can hear them now."Come on EA no one buys games in the spring! terrible release date!"

Putting it out at the same time as Battlefield and Call of Duty was a huge mistake for one. Secondly, They should have been more clear about it being supported with free content rather than saying upon release - There is no DLC, What's on disc is what you get and that's all. And honestly, I wasn't that big of a fan of the game. I loved the first one but the second didn't really do anything for me. The maps were boring, Titans were too quick to drop and there was nothing rewarding about playing the multiplayer.

EA is mostly to blame here. Putting this out in the same window as the mega-hyped BF1 and the yearly COD was franchise suicide. It's also likely people just didn't gel with the core gameplay of FPS parkour (early game) and mech fights (later game).

The Poor sales and rapid player drop rate have nothing to do with a bad release date! I'm so sick of hearing that fanboy excuse.

you don't pre-order a game at full market value and tire of it because Battlefield came out in the same frame. (the games are worlds apart) and COD had one of their worst releases ever in 2016 if not THE worst, so the bad release excuses it flat out wrong.

TitanFall 2 consists of too many bad unnecessary changes. so the game is suffering and hemorrhaging players. Not to say that all the changes are bad, But core elements that made the first game spectacular were thrown out.

The hype died for TitanFall 2 after legions of loyalists played the tech test and vowed never to go near it, rendering the game Dead on Arrival by AAA standards.

If this was the first Titanfall game ever created, It would have cleaned up because in and of itself it is a really good game.

But When compared to the Original its laughably terrible, sorry it just is. . .needed to be said.

You can choose not to believe it if you like, but the Numbers don't lie.

@GRADERBLADE13: I've played TitanFall 2 extensively, In spite of being a hardcore Titanfall1 player, I pre-ordered TF2 at full price and played it since release. (I had to get something to replace BLOPS3 cus COD makes me sick and I'm done with it.)

Ive got over 4000 kills with the simi-auto rifle alone, I would have been on my 10th prestige ages ago but I quit that because they keep resetting my classes. 10/10 games I'm making it in the top 3, most games I'm number one on the board even if my team lost

I'm not saying all this just to brag and I'm sorry if I come off like a dick, I'm saying it to provided proper context for my argument. TF2 is Fun, Like I said earlier all in all its a good game. The problem is the Titan Combat system of horribly inferior to TF1 and more restricting.

You guys are treating TitanFall 2 like its the gaming industry's best kept secret, Its Not man...it's Really Not. People have played it and are not impressed. both TF1 and TF2 have major failures and successes,

and with everything Titanfall2 does right, it fails in the most crucial area The Titans. and That's where TF1 shined.

players who think otherwise are the minority, and we know this for a FACT because when TF1 was an Exclusive it grossed over 10million sales by the end of its very short life.

TitanFail 2 is for EVERY MAJOR PLATFORM! is rapidly approaching the end of its life as players fall off only months from its release and had trouble breaking 4 million.

I'm not making this stuff up man lol, its not that TF2 is a bad game its just well known among TF's core following (The Majority) that its not what we hoped it'd be...and that's the problem. If Respawn makes TF3 off of the TF2 framework I wont be supporting it.

@jonsypher5: those loyalists who vowed never to go near it are the vocal minority

the real sales come from joe public who doesn't soend their time on gaming forums and who are swayed by brand power which is why releasing the game inbetween to giants is stupid

my brother is 14 and not allowed to play 18 games so that leaves him with titanfall (he is allowed to play 16s) but he said the game was "rubbish" purely because it wasn't BF or CoD so i ignored him and got it for his birthday and he hasn't stopped playing it

this ofc doesn't account for player drop off

@jonsypher5: Feel like comparison to the first game couldn't have been THAT big of a factor, because

a) for more than a year before 2's launch, Titanfall 1 had barely any players. It's not like everyone was jumping directly from one game to the other.

b) the first game wasn't on PS4, so that's a huge chunk of players who never tried the original.

@Spartan_418: You're not wrong about it being short lived in terms of activity. BUT consider this, Titan fall 1 had no real campaign. Upgrades and player expansion was virtually non-existent. Its lack of content doomed it to a short life span.

However, The fact that such a light game lasted as long as it did and Sold as well it did (as an Exclusive! ) was a glaring testament to its great MP game play. (the game was euphoric)

Titan Fall1 didn't have much, but what little it had was gold. it was sort of an unspoken understanding that all Respawn had to do was expand on that magnificent platform...instead they demolished it.

To address your second point, I believe that chunk of ps4 players who never played the original make up the majority of Titanfall 2 sales and current community. Because they never tried the original.

Think about it.

Titanfall1 was much less of a game in terms of content, AND was a Microsoft exclusive. -Still Sold WELL

Titanfall2 has much more content and is available for ALL major platforms - Is barely selling at all

What does that tell you? The numbers don't lie man. Respawn's Bad decisions killed Titanfall 2

Titanfall 2 should have a lot more players than it does, which is a shame because it's so good that it could easily have stood alone as EA's sole flagship shooter last year.

If EA was smart they would rotate Battlefield, Battlefront and Titanfall, releasing just 1 per year instead of cannibalizing their own sales, and giving each game a 3-year dev cycle so we don't have so many of those horrendously buggy Battlefield launches.

@Spartan_418: it shows that in reality EA had no faith in Battlefield after hardline and rightly so but Titanfall just looks like the same thing as every other war game just big robots and parkour, take those away and it's a COD or Battlefield clone.....

honestly the game should just be mech action, customize your mech, go out and kick some ass, play an interesting story to earn upgrades, money and weapons then go in the online war zone....at least then the game would stand out more....

at least there's Hawken.....i kinda suck at it but it's a cool game.....

@darthrevenx: "take those away and it's a COD or Battlefield clone"

Guessing you haven't played Titanfall 2's campaign. If you had, you wouldn't describe it that way.

http://kotaku.com/let-s-talk-about-titanfall-2-s-best-mission-1788777731if you don't mind spoilers

On the multiplayer side, the "parkour" (which is really much more than that) and the mechs aren't just gimmicks that could be removed no problem, they're part of a wonderfully well-made, dynamic and polished game. The maps are built around the wall-running and grappling hook abilities, giving you far more freedom and agility than in other shooters. There's a "gravity vortex grenade" thing which sucks in enemies, but it can also be used to curve bullets toward a target. There's a cool sort of mini-game where you can steal a battery from an enemy Titan and, if you survive, gift it to a friendly Titan and restore their health. They manage to balance 2-flag CTF on asymmetrical maps by having the teams switch sides at halftime (which is such an obvious solution I'm surprised other shooters haven't done it). I could go on and on like this.

This series failed, but ea is partly to blame for this too. Their original concept where you play as augmented humans was a way cooler idea and they shouldn't have stopped just because the Deus Ex at the time was announced.

EA should have released TF2 *THIS* month. The campaign is amazing, and the MP is fast & fun (just don't think about how much better Titans were in TF1, if you played that). Heck, they would have had 4-5 more months to implement a "Classic Titans" mode.

EA killed this game.

@boardsport311: Thats a big part of it. however Respawn completely ruined TF2. Everything that was cool about TF was changed or done away with completely. they basically ruined a near perfect shooter. LOTS of people went to the forums after the beta, but all complaints fell on deaf ears. So they lost a lot of returning players.

I enjoyed Titanfall 2's campaign, but multiplayer is disappointing for me. There's a lack of community and it sometimes takes me close to 10 minutes to join a match. That's pretty bad when I can join a match within seconds on CODMW2, which is an 8 year old game. I'd say the game is close to being "dead", at least on PC, which is an absolute shame because of the mishandling of the release by EA and its Origin platform which isolates it from a large community on Steam that refuse to use it.

@spartanx169x: Do you have it?

I bought it when it went on sale for only $23, figuring the online population wouldn't be as bad as it currently is. And actually, there WERE quite a few people playing recently, but that was only because of an update/free mode. It has since gone back down and finding a match sometimes just takes too so long, that I close it and jump back into CS:GO or BF1. Online FPS games aren't my favorite, but I like to have a few on hand to jump in for a few matches. Titanfall 2 clearly isn't even capable of filling that need since no one plays!

But yea, $23 or not, it wasn't a good investment because really I've gotten out of it is a decent 5 hour campaign a few hours of multiplayer. Who knows, maybe population will come back to respectable numbers once they slap it on EA Access.

@MaddenBowler10: I have the first one on 360, XB1 and PC. I was quite disappointed with TF2 after playing the beta. I didn't bother getting it. I knew it would fail. So I didn't bother. I got BF1 and Overwatch instead.
