Tiberium terminated

Following troubling rumors, EA confirms it has pulled the plug on the Command and Conquer-based FPS because it did not meet quality standards.

At the end of July, Electronic Arts announced it was delaying the launch of Tiberium on the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. Without citing any specific issues, the publisher postponed the first-person spin-off of the Command & Conquer series until its 2010 fiscal year, meaning the earliest it would have hit retail was April 2009.

No Caption Provided

Today came news that Tiberium won't hit retail, period. This afternoon, EA confirmed to GameSpot that the title has been canceled outright, a victim of an internal quality-control audit by EA. The game was in development at EA's Los Angeles studio, where the next installment in the C&C series, Command and Conquer Red Alert 3, remains in the works for the PC and Xbox 360.

"EA has suspended work on Tiberium effective immediately," corporate communications spokesperson Mariam Sughayer told GameSpot. "The game was not on track to meet the high quality standards set by the team and by the EA Games Label. A lower-quality game is not in the best interest of the consumers and would not succeed in this market." Since taking over in 2007, EA CEO John Riccitiello and EA Games president Frank Gibeau have said they are implementing a more strident quality-control system at EA's numerous internal studios.

As a result of the cancellation, an unidentified number of employees are being let go from EALA. Sughayer explained that "every effort" is being made "to place talented people on other projects." Besides Red Alert 3, EALA is home to a number of Steven Spielberg-produced games, including a 360/PS3 sci-fi shooter. It's also where 300 director Zack Snyder will be setting up shop to work on a trio of new IPs with EA.

really i think that red alert 3 was the gayest game they have ever made, i love command and conquer but i cannot stand red alert 3, im sure a first person shooter of tiberium wars would be a lot better than red alert 3, if they are canceling this then they should have canceled red alert 3

Such a good game I was looking forward on playing it has been Cancelled. So sad... I thought it was something like Renegade but way better. Now they've cancelled it. Same goes for Haze. Haze and Tiberium were similar and I know a lot of FPS fans were looking forwards on playing it and it got cancelled. Disappointing news.

Looking at all these cool in-game pictures, it is hard to believe that it did not meet standards. This would have been one of the best shooters, I think. Oh, well.

They need to renew the franchise through the FPS universe, similar to Renegade. If they don't... it will lose a lot of the credibility towards the versatility and power of EA. EA has the money, and the technology... they can rebuild it. It would be a great shout out to the fans and put a lot of faith and trust back in them, if they would pick this back up. - Cere.

People need to remember it costs many many $$$$ to develope a game from scratch & if said game looks like it may not meet the standards then it is also possible it won't get the buyer/players. C & C has got to where it is through the work EA has put into it & I personally think they should keep C & C the way it is as that is what has made it such a great game.

As with all massive corporations, everyone is gonna hate them, its always the way. I for one like some of their games (not all) but the more people who play their games, the more people there are to be vocal about how they hate them.

If EA IS trying to improve its standards by purchasing talented companies to make up for thier internal screw-ups, and hold their products to a higher standard, then that great news. Problem is, when a great product isn't meeting quality standards, you improve the quality. If that means bring in new people, change teams or start over, thats what you do. You cancel a title outright, especially early on, when you don't think it will make you money. EA doesn't think it will get a significant financial return vs. the expense to make a FPS that will stand up in this market. Unfortunatly, they may be right. In the comming months odds are people spending will really drop, and only the really quality titles and games with names that guarantee cash (Pokemon) will make up the huge new-gen investments. The fans need to tell EA that we want Tiberium, and make it loud enough to change their minds.

EA Quality standards = revenue projection (or whatever the technical term would be) It's the EA way, sure you can sell your company or project to them for big money, just remember that you SOLD it to EA. EALA studios is no devil but EA's financial bigheads only live and die by the dollar.

Jesus, if this was low quality by EA's standards, it really must have been terrible, considering how derivative and bland their internally developed games that DO manage to hit shelves usually are =/

Well, that's disappointing... I was looking forward to Tiberium... but, it makes no sense that they pulled the plug, it was the logical next installment of the C&C universe, original, Red Alert, shooter, original Red Alert, spin-off, original, Red Alert...

I don't think that this FPS was ever really in development. It was all a ploy so that EA could just 'cancel' it to try to convince us of their 'quality standards'.

If I ever heard a bunch of crap this is it. EA is telling us that TIBERIUM was not meeting their "high quality standards." What the heck, they're making the game. Improve your standards and make the game. Am I missing something here? Come on EA get serious. A Pox on EA.
