This New Souls-like Sets Itself Apart With Its Unusually Sunny, Pleasant World

The Italian sun and folklore await in this upcoming Souls-like title

Enotria: The Last Song isn't the first game to take inspiration from Souls-likes, the genre forged from the fires of From Software's Dark Souls and Bloodborne games, but it may very well be the sunniest and warmest-looking one yet.

Developer and publisher Jyamma Games is still aiming for that particular flavor of combat, timing, and player agency in a world made almost entirely out of hope, but with some changes that just might shake up the Souls-like genre.

Enotria: The Last Song takes place in a sad and broken world, but you might not know it at first glance with the sun-bathed landscapes and lush green grass looking inviting rather than creepy.

This action-RPG almost carries a stirring sense of wonder, like B-roll footage of the Xbox 360's Fable trilogy, but the Italian summers of Enotria carry much more under the surface than sun damage.

Jyamma Games is working toward a feeling and aesthetic that will transport players to the Italian countryside while also keeping the dread and despair baked firmly at the center of it all.

This "Summer-Soul" title pulls the colors of Italy's summers to the surface, but the game's curse is alive and well. The "Curse of the Canovaccio" is thriving even more than a seaside breeze. Like Dark Souls, the hope of what's possible, if only a few can muster the courage to see it, is painstakingly present.

The inhabitants of Entoria: The Last Song largely serve the curse and those who created it, and those remaining have been swept up in performing for the Play, a mysterious allure held by the game's antagonists. Those strong enough and possessing the courage will find help from some allies, but most of the world is waiting to be saved in Enotria: The Last Song.

Only a small number of gameplay details have been revealed so far. Enotria: The Last Song will feature exploration for players to tackle across diverse environments. It's too soon to know if it will be the next must-play Souls-like, but the sunny slumber-laced world does look intriguing.

One notable gameplay twist is the switching player-states of Enotria. Ardmore will allow players to access different states inside and outside combat. Toggling between them will dynamically change the world and affect enemy behaviors, giving players more ways to tackle and explore the combat scenarios and puzzles of Enotria.

No Caption Provided

Like most Souls-like games, the player-character is an oddity situated just outside of things. In Enotria, the player is born outside the Canovaccio, which positions them with unique tools and perspective in their quest to purge the world of this endless curse.

Enotria: The Last Song does not have a release date or platforms yet, but it stands out thanks to the team being composed of Witcher III veterans and showcasing something infrequently in games: Italian folklore, legends, and locations.

Author: This is the sunniest brightest most colorful souls-like ever.

Code Vein: Am I a joke to you? I am literally anime.

@Akriel_Boulve: Actually, Code Vein is pretty dark and grimy, like they dropped a bucket of mud all over that anime. I think it was a common criticism, although I imagine its much brighter and colourful if you play with HDR on.

But there are others. Remnants has some very bright and/or colourful environments notably the fairy tale forest.

@Barighm: Character designs, attacks and specials were certainly bright. Plus they have an entire desert area and the final area is so pretty with it's bright whites and saturated blood red, so pretty. The Cathedral was also very bright, but confusing architecturally but that was kinda the point.

Now I wanna replay it and still gotta play God Eater 3, but I also have so much in the backlog -_-;

You know, at this point, I'm thinking articles like this are just some marketing variant of Cunningham's Law. They're almost always wrong in some way, but they did get us to comment on them.

@Barighm: You're not wrong, though I would argue that this is more click-bait rather than a proper example of Cunningham's Law as I understand it. The author isn't trying to find the sunniest and most colorful souls-like by posting an obviously terrible example, they're just trying to get people to engage with the article in the most efficient way possible, by stirring up the readers into "correcting" the author.

@Barighm: The key distinction I drew is that in Cunningham's law, the goal of posting the fallacious statement is to draw on the wisdom of the crowd to form a more proper conclusion, but the author was not actually trying to do this, they just wanted clicks. I would not call this a "variant" because the purpose and goals are completely misaligned.

Light is not a "variant" of Darkness, as it were.

i kinda hate the idea of developing biter games. but this surely is my fav genre and ill playem all.

edit: googled trailer and revised; i wont play this at all. the aesthetic is off putting imo. enjoyed the colourful nature but he slim, acrobatic masked hero with dorky hat and ukelele music makes this a pass

More generic garbage wannabe souls games. These devs need to stop trying because none of them understand what makes Fromsoft titles unique. Atmosphere is hard to nail, and not a single developer is even close. Then, there's combat, and its as bad, and from every dev. Please stick to copying cover shooters, y'all will have more luck with it cuz you're already copying generic af game direction.

@hardwenzen: Mortal Shell nailed the atmosphere. That is by far and away the game's one most critically acclaimed trait.

Combat...um, okay, but Lies of P looks promising and a melee build in Remnants did manage to capture the excitement of Souls boss fights. Moreso because a melee build was unbalanced and frustrating, but the speed of combat was pretty similar.

@Barighm: I think Hellpoint did a pretty good job of nailing the atmosphere, but with a sci-fi motif straight out of Event Horizon that I really liked. Combat and story were about what you'd expect.

@Jarrkha: I played the first one and really liked the slice off the limb you want so you don't have to pray to RNGesus, and I got 2 in a humble bundle a while back, maybe I'll install it later.

@Akriel_Boulve: that's funny, I never got around to trying the first one, and I probably own it somewhere lol.

Also, 3 days have passed since I wrote that comment? Dang, weekend blew by.

@Jarrkha: The first game had a lot of interesting ideas and I enjoyed it quite a bit. From what I understand the first game is a much more linear experience and most seem to agree it had the better storyline. From what I have read the second game had better combat and weapon options, but I didn't find the first game really lacking in that department, though you might having played the second one first. I'd say if you liked the second one you will most likely enjoy the first. Cheers.

@Akriel_Boulve: Yeah I played through a huge chunk of the second while it was on Game Pass, and keep meaning to get it everytime it's on one of its numerous sales. The combat is very robust - tons of variety and some flexibility with customization - while feeling crisp and fluid, and a fresh take on gear upgrading & acquisition. If it had had a dual wielding system like Dark Souls 2 (and I think DaS3), all the better.

But thanks for the recommendation, I went and checked and don't own Surge 1, so I think I'll take one of those juicy bundle discounts this Xmas. It's really time that's the limiting factor... Not enough hours in the day to go through the bucket list!

@Barighm: yeah there's something about the presentation or production value I just can't quite shake, even in the Surge 2 which I hear is more refined than its predecessors. Remarkable technology though -- whole base game came under 10GB on my One X, iirc.

Don't agree.

Mortal shell looked like they used free UE4 assets. Hard to have a good atmosphere when it looks like some cheaply made demo. Lies of P has this janky ass looking combat/animations that i simply can't get over. And the enemies/boss design is simply fugly.

@hardwenzen: Yeah, but you're always so wildly pessimistic and critical I can't take anything you say seriously especially since Lies of P is like the only Souls-like I've ever seen where the animations actually looked good (you must be thinking of Steelrising) and as I get notifications whenever new assets are added to the Unreal store, I'm pretty sure the Fortress area of Mortal Shell wasn't just some cheap reused asset, lol.

It will be in mid 70's on meta. If its higher than an 8, you can throw a couple of eggs and tomatoes at my face.

To me, it looks incredibly generic. Its as if the developer WANTED real hard to capitalize on all the souls fans that want a Bloodborne remake/BB2, and Sony ain't giving us shit, so they've tried their best to ripoff the style (which, in my opinion is nowhere near what Fromsoft did in BB) to be 1- noticed (which they were successful at doing so. heard a lot of talk about this game after its announcement) and 2- well, sell to those that are starving for Bloodborne remake or a sequel.

Remember those cheap shit cover shooters during the 7th gen that all wanted to be Gears? This is how Lies of P looks to me.

I wish them good luck.
It's astoundingly hard to be as good as Dark Souls,
and the imitators often trip themselves by trying too hard to be like it.
It's hard to understand how Dark Souls does it so effortlessly.

@naryanrobinson: On that note: 2D Souls like games bypass the drawbacks of trying too hard, and I think it works in their favour. Out of the good few I've tried, haven't yet found a stinker.

@Jarrkha: Yeah I think I'd agree with that.
For anyone wondering, here's all the modern-era games which could arguably be described as 2D Dark Souls-likes.
Metroidvania elements welcome.
Roguelike elements not.

Dark Devotion, Death's Door, ENDER LILIES: Quietus Of The Knights, Minoria, Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight, TUNIC, The Last Faith, Vigil: The Longest Night, GRIME, Blasphemous, Death's Gambit: Afterlife, Eldest Souls, Salt & Sanctuary, Morbid: The Seven Acolytes.

@naryanrobinson: That's a banger list. Haven't actually tried one or two of those. I'd add the recently released "Moonscars," and also Hollow Knight... Though some may disagree whether that's a Soulslike or not. Tomato, tomato.

That's funny. I remember quite a bit of sun and colourful vegetation in Elden Ring.
