This New Handheld Game System Has An Actual Hand Crank

Introducing the Playdate.

A new handheld video game system has been announced, and it's anything but traditional. The system, called Playdate, features an actual hand crank that can be used to play games (or not).

The system is yellow and it is small enough to fit in your pocket. It features a black and white screen, and it plays all kinds of games. It's being made by the software developer Panic, which has been in business for more than two decades. Recently, it started a publishing business and some of its marquee titles have included Firewatch and the soon-to-release Untitled Goose Game.

Now Playing: Playdate Is A New Handheld Video Game Console - GS News Update

Panic wanted to do even more, and that led to an idea to make a handheld game system. "What if we could push ourselves even further? What if we could build something? A real something that you could hold?" Panic said. "It was harder than we thought, but it's here."

Panic worked with independent game designers Keita Takahashi, Zach Gage, Bennett Foddy, and Shaun Inman to create the Playdate console. "We showed them Playdate and asked, "Want to make a game for it?" Then we lost our minds when they said "Yeah!" Playdate said.

In terms of game releases, the Playdate will get 12 "brand-new games," one released each week. Panic is keeping them a secret now so their release comes as a surprise. "Some are short, some long, some are experimental, some traditional. All are fun," Panic said.

As for the Playdate's most unique feature, the hand crank, the rotating analog controller flips out from the side of the system. Some titles will use the crank exclusively, but others won't use it at all. The console also has traditional A and B buttons, along with a D-Pad. The system also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, as well as USB-C and a headphone jack.

The Playdate console launches in 2020, priced at $150 USD. All 12 of the games in Season One are included for that cost. Presumably further seasons of games will follow if the system succeeds.

You can read this detailed FAQ to learn more about the Playdate console.

I'm interested. Of course, I'm not expecting this to compete with any other systems. This is a one off, an oddity. It'll succeed in exactly what it sets out to do.

4 Rtx 2080 plus 4 1000 ssd, amd Ryzen 32 core, with 2000 power brick, liquid cooled with a huge 65 inch TV.

While I don't have this by any means it would be absolutely hilarious if someone was cranking that with a fly wheel.

P,s generators don't count you cheating bleep.

Kinda wish it could be used to power the device so it didn't have to be charged at all. Just a couple mins winding and you'd be good to go. But also cool as a novel control input too.

I like the idea, but there's no way this thing will work.

@lolfooledyou: This Playdate and the New Intellevision are going to be the two biggest flops of the video game industry. Even worse than Virtual Boy and Ouya.

I believe this portable gaming console will feature a screen that is *not back lit*. Ever since the Gameboy Advance SP no portable has failed to have a back lit screen. Please don't do a disservice to the Ouya or the upcoming Intellivision console, by comparing them - those both assume you will connect them to a TV or monitor. Back lit. The Playdate is a portable that you cannot play in the dark, announced in 2019.

To be honest, I don't care for this system. It has failed to generate my interest, and based on what I have heard thus far I don't intend to purchase the Playdate.

Is this perhaps a social experiment of some kind? It seems a bit late for an April Fool's joke, but I don't think this is a serious consumer product, either, so I can only assume there might be someone monitoring the reactions, perhaps?

Push button.

Get cheese.

(Ok, I admit it... I want the SDK and emulator for this, like, today. Seriously curious what you have to reinvent vs convenience functions, libs, etc)

Fishing rod simulator and all for just £150.

Its nearly as ludicrous and expensive rubbish as the cardboard cut out stuff from labo from Nintendo!!!

However, as with labo 10/10 for effort and "out there" uniqueness, but "its a no from me!!!"

Remember that old saying "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all."?

We can certainly apply that here. Let me rephrase:

"If you're completely out of ideas, don't put a hand crank on a gameboy."

The hand crank doesn't power the device, but it is used for "games" that simulate that, such as "Radio charger simulator", "Torch charger simulator" and my favourite "Weird yellow device charger simulator". Just crank that crank and wave goodbye to those braincells. Wheee!

I think they've got a hit on their hands. It matches the one they got on their head to even market this.

And the "hey you get free games, for a few months" line implies it's also a games-as-a-service device too, oh dear.

Yeah, I can't even imagine how hard it was to design something like that, with worse hardware and fewer buttons than the original Gameboy had and a very innovative crank feature. And it only costs $150? I can see the revolution coming.

@Atzenkiller: Don't forget the billions they'll make selling replacement hand cranks.
