Fallout 3 Remaster In The Works, But It's Not Arriving Anytime Soon - Report

Meanwhile, Fallout 5 and the second season of the Amazon Prime Video TV series are on the way, too.

While everyone waits for the leaked The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered to officially get announced, Bethesda apparently has another storied RPG getting a similar treatment in the works: Fallout 3. A new report states the post-apocalyptic game is happening but won't arrive anytime soon.

Industry insider NateTheHate2, who previously nailed aspects of the Switch 2 reveal, replied to a question on X about whether Fallout 3 Remastered was "still happening." The answer was that it's "planned but won't be for a while." There was no other info provided, such as what developer might be tackling the reported project. Fallout 3 originally came out in 2008 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Industry insider NateTheHate2 responds to a question about a possible Fallout 3 Remastered.

Meanwhile, Bethesda Game Studios plans to make Fallout 5, though Todd Howard won't put "dates on anything." That's probably because the wait for more info on The Elder Scrolls VI has taken so long. Instead, for that fantasy-RPG franchise, players can look forward to the impending release of Oblivion Remastered, which has been heavily rumored and then appeared on the Virtuos website earlier this week. It's believed the game will launch next week, though no official confirmation has occurred yet.

Last month, a new update rolled out for Fallout 76 that finally let players become Ghouls. The online RPG saw a resurgence last year after the premiere of Amazon Prime Video's Fallout TV show. Actor Walton Goggins said in February that Fallout Season 2 "blows [the first season] out of the water." There isn't a return date for the show at this time.

Yeah, I don't get it. I'm kinda sick of the lazy remaster economy at this point. It's not my fault Microsoft bought a company that forgot how to make great games.

Makes sense considering microsoft would want something fallout related to release before fallout 5 which at the current rate of bethesda game development will launch in the mid 2030s. Which is just unacceptable if I'm totally honest.

Just make a new game already - NOT a multiplayer game like 76. which I love.

I want a new Fallout game.

@amichalski81: As do I, but I have a feeling I'll have to change my handle to FreakinElderlyGrandadGamer before we get it. Look at how long Starfield took, how long ES6 is taking. Many adjectives can be used to describe Bethesda. "Fast" is not one of them.

@olddadgamer: oh 100% you will have to have that name change. It's most likely coming in the mid 2030s at the current rate and which bethesda are developing games.

@xnshd: Yeah, I'd peg it somewhere between 2030 and 2035, for real. I don't think we'll see ES6 until 2027 at the absolute earliest, and no way Bethesda gets another out in two years after that.

@guitarwarrior66: Have you tried modding new vegas? I was massively impressed with the difference a few mods can make to the game, played through it not too long ago and was still a great experience. Not sure a remaster is needed tbh. I would actually like to see F3 remastered, but its probably a preference thing. Overall, I'd prefer they just focused on bringing us a new experience. I loved 4, did not enjoy 76 at all.

@guitarwarrior66: Agreed, especially since Fallout: New Vegas has absolute garbage controls when compared to Fallout 3 and Fallout 4. It's carried almost solely by the story and overall depth of the setting of the game. But by today's standards (and even 2010 standards) the controls were meh at best. Granted, if they change it enough so it seems like Fallout 4 then "purists" will complain it's not as good as the original.

I think it does need an update. Don't get me wrong - I love FO3...put in probably 300 hours immediately after I got it, without switching to any other game (which is something I usually do) and was blown away by it completely. It's probably my favourite ever game.

But I tried to have another run-through about 6 months ago and just couldn't get past the graphics. I only put in, probably, 15 hours or so then switched back to FO4.

I'd love to see a remaster.

@mpl911: I did the same thing. F3 is my favorite, but the graphics did not hold up. Full RT should help ;).

Maybe it's just me, but I think Fallout 3 looks fine and is playable the way it is. I just replayed it again several months back. I'm not a fan of remasters unless there's something that makes the original unplayable. For example SW Dark Forces didn't have proper mouse look in the original. The mouse looks, but also moves your character.

@Wraith3: If they get rid of the loading screens that would be worth it alone.

I can't imagine a modern remaster where they keep them in...

@girlusocrazy: I played on PC so I wasn't even thinking about console. Yeah that would be a big help to the game experience without those!

@Wraith3: Even if you wanted to put up with the extra technical issues of gaming on PC to try to brute force the game, they did not remove the loading. It isn't a seamless experience walking from outdoors to an indoor area no matter what platform you play the game on.

@girlusocrazy: Oh yeah. I wasn't thinking going from outdoor to indoor. For some reason my mind went to New Vegas where, when you got to Freeside there were loading doors ever 100 yds or so.

@Wraith3: I think that's the ultimate goal that gamers would really appreciate is if it was really one big seamless world. I think we will get there. But if this game is 17 years old then hopefully the advances in tech and the generations of hardware advantages will make it possible.

@Wraith3: Honestly in terms of visuals and gameplay, Fallout 3 is still great. For me, as a console player, the only reason I would want an updated version is to a) fix a lot of the crashing that happened on the PS3 version b) have the ability to play on modern consoles.

They’ll just wait for the Anniversary or season 3. Something like that.
