The Xbox 360 Store Shuts Down For Good Today

The marketplace was live for almost 19 years.

The final countdown has begun for the Xbox 360 store, which officially shutters today after opening shop almost 19 years ago. That means you won't be able to buy Xbox 360 games or DLC on the marketplace in a matter of hours. However, they will still be available to play and redownload for people who already purchased that content.

Larry Hryb, also known as Major Nelson, marked the occasion on X, saying it was his "pleasure sharing all the thousands of marketplace sales and updates I've given over the years." Just over a year ago, Hryb left Xbox after spending 22 years with Microsoft, with his last position being senior director of corporate communications.

In August 2023, Microsoft announced that the Xbox 360 store would be closing today, July 29--giving people almost a year heads-up. Additionally, the Microsoft Movies and TV app will no longer function on Xbox 360 systems, meaning you can't view your content on those consoles.

However, Microsoft does say that any backward-compatible Xbox 360 (and original Xbox) games will still be available for purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. Online multiplayer support, meanwhile, depends on publishers and developers for Xbox 360 games and won't be affected by the store's shuttering.

As for Xbox, the latest big update for consoles and cloud arrived last month, bringing new background customization, subscription management on consoles, and mouse-and-keyboard functionality for cloud gaming.

" However, they will still be available to play and redownload for people who already purchased that content."

Exactly how do i redownload a game i bought previously? If the store is not open..how would i do it? Could someone explain it please?

And also, how do i check which games i bought because i think i have not bought anything from the Xbox 360 Xbox store since 2011 or something similar. Is there a place where i could see which games i bought? The games i downloaded are on my Xbox 360 but i might have downloaded some games, then deleted them, and not redownloaded them again. I might have bought more games than i see on the game section at Xbox 360.

When they say "all good things must come to an end", is such a piss poor excuse, no pal, all bad things must end forever.

Now my purchase of Dishwasher games is no more. Why that studio couldn't make it available for the Xbox One?

It's a moment to reflect, how we're aging. Our youth spent on Mass Effect, praying the red-circle doesn't show up, trying to stock on batteries.

It's a sad day, truly.

@RPGyte: I feel like we reflect too much on it. Almost daily, there is some news about how some game or machine now is 10 years old or 35 years old or 30 years old and so on. Or the "what feels like 20 years ago against what was actually 20 years ago" posts on social media.

We do not need even more reflecting.

Although i feel like Xbox 360 has been out of date and obsolete for a while and it is not until now i feel like it is really starting to get a little bit retro. I recently plugged in my Xbox 360 and replayed some old games. A different kind of nostalgia than NES and SNES because it reminds me of a different time, when i was kind of adult but still young and enjoyed games a lot. Xbox 360 and Ps3 was a nice age for games. Online and HD finally was available, wireless control pads was standard and graphics looked arguably a lot better than on the previous consoles. I would say some games from the Ps360 generation still looks quite okay now.. maybe not on a big tv but on a smaller tv the 720 p resolution is not a problem, and the graphics quality is quite nice. But newer games has better effects, lighting, ray tracing and so on. Open world games especially looks a bit dated on PS360.

Games are objectively better now, but playing them was sometimes more fun (and the pleasure of being new, with online and HD gaming) back then.

and microtransactions was for the most part not a thing yet. Microtransactions does not bother me so much, i just ignore them. But some people really dislike them now in many games.

@mogan: That's a HUGE reason why, but it's mainly because this entire year has been anti-consumer to the people that BUY XBOX. The nerfing of the loyalty program, the bad dashboard update that took away some of our pinned content, the price increase of game pass, the fact that even SIMPLE games like MVC are skipping XBOX now while we see our console exclusives drip to Playstation.

And of course, taking down the 360 marketplace.

@vgmkyle: I feel like i am just thankful for getting essentially free games from Microsoft / Xbox .. .. if i play a game 15 minutes a day i get a certain amount of points and after a while i could exchange the points for gift cards and use them to buy games on xbox store which are heavily on sale. Not worth complaining about it really. It is nice actually buying games and owning themtoo , as opposed to just renting them in a subscription.

as for the Xbox 360 store shutting down, i guess it is kind of bad but it is 2024 now so i feel like they had it open long enough. My main concern is some Xbox 360 games (and OG Xbox games too) do not work on Xbox One. Infact, i think if i would try all my xbox 360 game discs, more than 50% would not work on Xbox One. As well as some downloaded XBLA (Xbox live arcade) games which do not work either.

As for MVC i do not know what MVC is? :)

@simonthekid7: I know how the loyalty program works. I've been using it for a long time, and they destroyed it.

I'm not forgiving Sarah Bond for hiring a preservation team and then shutting down the store. There was no reason for them to do it.

And yes: Marvel vs Capcom; among MANY other games that were just completely left off of XBOX.

You haven't even been able to find a decent 360 controller for YEARS! Just clanky Chinese junk. MS pushed XBL Arcade on the 360, yet didn't make them all backwards compatible being they were digital-only? I have over 200 digital games tied to a 360 with no real way to play them.

I did put a nice 500GB drive in my 360, and had to be flashed to play Xbox Originals discs. I'd definitely use it if I could play it, lol. And yes... I have one of the Chinese controllers. It's a lesson in futility.

@simonthekid7: You would have thought that MS would have made the newer controllers to also work on the 360 if they were discontinuing the 360 controllers. Kinda seems like common sense, right? If anything, make a limited run of controllers with a switch on it to change between 360 and XB1/X/S frequencies.

I mean, it's just the store. Not like they're bricking everyone's consoles. All the games will still be out there in physical land. Helps support mom and pop shops (support local business, my friends) if you get them that way anyway.

@olddadgamer: I might not buy another game on disc for Xbox 360 but i kind of overbought games for it when i had a lot of money but not so much time or interest, and so i have kind of a semi huge library of unplayed 360 games to play.

On Xbox One, which is still my main console, i have not bought as many games, mostly played xbox game pass games or Games with gold games. Less money and the fact i do not actually play the games i buy all the time and end up with a pile of unplayed games are reasons behind why i have not bought as many games. And as a result i do not own quite a lot of big name games for Xbox One. Same thing with Playstation 3 and 4.

@olddadgamer: Incorrect - many of the games never got a physical release, and are now gone forever, which is why so many people are unhappy about the closure. I applaud all the things that Microsoft have done to enable BC and game preservation, but the permanent loss of so many LIVE Arcade games which were never released on disc is a painful black mark for them.

@olddadgamer: yeah quite a lot of digital only games. Most of them were Xbox Live arcade games.

I have not been able to play Battlefield 1943 for a while i think. I think it was an online only game. and without active servers you only reach the menu.. or maybe there is an offline mode with bots, i do not know.

Just like everything online nowadays that people are spending money on. They don't think about it but these online games they are spending a lot of money on right now, will also shutdown one day for them to lose it all. What a waste.

@sebb: I think we've been playing online games long enough at this point to understand that they will eventually go away, and to accept that when we buy into them.

This is also just the store shutting down.

@Vodoo: Nah. By the time games finally go offline, I’m well past not playing them anymore and moved on to other things. I’d rather play what I want now, and have the experiences of playing online games with my friends, than miss out because someday those games will go away.

@mogan: But the games are infact still playable. The only problem is they are not available to buy any more. But you could still start up Xbox 360 and play them, if they are still stored on a hard drive or usb stick.

@sebb: How is it a waste? People pay/play because they enjoy it. Online communities for a game always die down after a year or two, so most games in 1-2 decades wouldn't have anyone online anyways.

@philip6k: @sebb i would prefer if games could still be played online, maybe on a privately funded server. Suppose i want to play an old fps game .. then i should be able to if i pay for the server cost myself.

But i do not expect companies to keep servers open for old games like .. for example .. Final Fantasy XI.

@simonthekid7: the only instance I'd find an online game acceptable to buy or subscribe to is if, after end of support, the server app could be run entirely on the client's machine too. Otherwise you still depend on someone other than you to provide the service and are therefore at their mercy.

@girlusocrazy: it is weird how it got that accolade with the RROD. I bought the black one that didn't have this problem. Xbox 360 wasn't perfect, but it was great nevertheless. The rivals mess-ups may helped... but when that doesn't help really :D?

@santinegrete: It was more because of the community features, starting selling smaller indie games online and providing dev kits to indies, bringing many western developers and games to consoles, and having a significant market segment so that they could get unique games. Now it all seems ubiquitous, but those things were novel at the time and made the console stand out.

Anyway I had like 3 RROD failures, that part really sucked. I ended up getting the 360 Slim because I just wanted those problems to end. Maybe the extra console purchases due to that made the sales seem bigger, but it still has a special place in the minds of gamers.

@girlusocrazy: the white one I had came with the E79 and lasted like 3 years before RROD with a cooler mod. I experimented Alan Wake and Tales of Vesperia earlier, and adding support to USB storage gave a me chance to buy DLC and those indies you named.

Gears coop in split screen was a great experience, unparalled by any other coop experience I had.

@santinegrete: My first one lasted until Halo 3 released so just shy of 2 years, that is not very long for a console, and they were going to make me pay for a replacement because it wasn't under warranty anymore but with the cost and shipping and time I just bought another one like a sucker. Eventually I was able to get the first one repaired but it didn't last long. I got really tired of the problems.

Vesperia, Blue Dragon, Katamari, a ton of Cave shmpus, Bayonetta, Ridge Racer 6, Deadly Premonition, and those ports of Ikaruga and Radiant Silvergun, there were a lot of good unique games on that system worth playing compared to newer Xboxes.

The Xbox 360 was my first Xbox, and it was simply amazing overall. The only downside was the red circle of death, which I experienced once, but Microsoft support fixed/replaced my console for free. I had bought two 360s (including the Elite model) for LAN gaming at home, some really great memories :) I also had a PS3, but the 360 was truly my main console at the time.

In the next generation of consoles, I completely switched to the PS4 and PS5, and never once looked at the Xbox One.

Just recently in 2024, I got a Series X to play online with some friends. Even on the Series X, most of my library consists of backwards-compatible Xbox 360 games. This goes to show that the 360 was the pinnacle of the Xbox family!
