Torn between Bloodborne and The Witcher 3. But overall, The Witcher feels more complete.

Bloodborne not on the best soundtrack list? 'The First Hunter' craps on every other track in that list alone.

And what exactly is the technical achievement Fallout 4 can win with its Morrowind engine?

I really don't know what to think about the Narrative part. Witcher 3 narrative was (obviously - it's an Open World game) not as well-paced as Life is Strange, but Life is Strange's ending was absolute shit. On the flipside Witcher 3 ending was EXACTLY the type of ending narrative-focused games should have - a summary of your journey, instead of a last minute button press, that delivers a satisfying conclusion adapting to your personal preferences about aspects of the game world.

I think either game deserves that particular award, but I am still a bit sore after Life is Strange's unsatisfying and disappointing ending, so I am kinda leaning towards Witcher 3 in that regard.

That also puts the new IP category under question - Life is Strange could be a great IP based on how good the main characters are and an interesting gameplay mechanic, but the ending destroyed all possible continuity of that as a franchise.

Other than that every category seems to be a rather obvious choice.

TW3 is hands-down GOTY... I've played every game on that list -- and I'm a die-hard, series-long Fallout fan & huge Souls series fan -- and TW3 absolutely decimated everything else.

I really don't understand people, who say that TW3 combat is terrible. It definitely isn't the best system ever created, but seriously there are plenty of games that have much, much worse combat.

@Vojtass: haven't played an RPG with worse mechanics save for Witcher 2...and this was worse than that, this was clunky and loose...I have never swung over someone's head so much in my life. It's just not its strength....at all.

Witcher 3 was a fantastic game. Being a PC gamer (No Bloodborne or stuff...) I specifically remember saying "at long last... a game truly worth playing!'

The most remarkable aspect of Witcher games is the art. Assassins of Kings was masterfully made and every one of the environments (The castle at the beginning, Flotsam, fields of Aedirn, Loc Muinne) were alive. The combat was enjoyable and the RPG elements were great.

Wild Hunt took the well-received formula of Assassins of Kings and added the magic of open world to it. The scale of story is massive and every quest you embark on is cleverly attached to the other storylines. From story to characterization and gameplay mechanics, Witcher 3 deserves all the applause and appreciation it can get. At least that's IMO!

@zakhaev1: No, I think Witcher should absolutely be on the shortlist, but only a massive fanboy thinks it's handsdown the GOTY.....objectively, it had too many flaws to be far above FO or TR (not even listed as they're clearly a PS group)....each of the great games from this year had their strengths and weaknesses...for me, Tomb Raider was the most complete game.

@pornadius: The combat "dance" is both excellent and pinpoint-accurate to the books. Play on Death March difficulty if you think it's too easy.

Roach, however... They need to add the ability to decapitate him.

@Jawehawk-DK: Look, NOTHING compares to the combat of a Souls game. But Bloodborne can't hold a candle to Witcher's plot, dialogue, quests, depth, and stories -- and that's coming from a fan of all Souls games.

@Daelusca: Rise of the Tomb Raider is gorgeous, perfectly acted (again), and very engrossing -- but it's no GOTY candidate. The basic gameplay loop is too simplistic, although very enjoyable.

@Pyrosa: Odd our perception of things; in what exact way is the "gameplay loop" in Witcher better than Tomb Raider; I find that an odd contention. Tomb Raider had far more ways to approach combat than Witcher did and was the only game that came close to matching Witcher's atmosphere. My only real gripe with TR was the continued existance of the QTE!!!! I spent about the same amount of time in both worlds to 100% the games....imo Tomb Raider is the better game, albeit not by much...I would put Witcher 4th among equals this year, behind TR, Divinity and Fallout.

@novaxy: lol....a game that required almost 200 fixes in the first 2 weeks after launch (that was already delayed a year to fix bugs) should not ever be uttered alongside GOAT. Great game, no question, but that was in spite of its many, many objective failures.

@connorman01: I don't expect a game that was delayed several times for a year to be riddled with known glitches that impact the player's experience. Unity got a well deserved beating for being released glitchy....Witcher got relatively little with more actual glitches. I don't mind a game that has known glitches that could not be patched before release,as long as there is a day 1 patch....Witcher had several patches in a 2 week span, none of which helped a true fan that played day 1......unacceptable to anyone but a fanboy.

@zero_juice: I have never heard anyone suggest Fallout was a GOAT...you making that up? Like Witcher it was a great game, I liked FO slightly more. The mechanics in FO were far superior to Witcher, but none of the stories was engaging, to me, in the least. The bugs in huge games like Bethesda makes appear to be unavoidable as there are so many moving parts; Witcher is a relatively large world but not remotely close to as detailed or sophisticated as either Bethesda titles....and their bugs are not game breaking (for most of us). Witcher combat was atrocious; movement in general was.....skiing down mountains on your feet and half-piping at the end was just 1 examples of the bad mechanics.

@Daelusca: I'm just under 200hrs into Fallout4, and have done 2-3 full playthroughs of every other Fallout game (bought each on release day, even the horrible action game), and Fallout 4 still doesn't beat TW3. Yes, the main quest is excellent, the Minecraft-like settlements are fun for ~10 hours, and a SMALL handful of side quests are deeply engrossing (Constitution & Valentine FTW).

..and yes, Fallout 3, Vegas, and 4 each had game-breaking bugs upon release. Tactics had a pretty bad one, but the structure pretty much required structured saves so it wasn't too crippling.

Fallout 4's radiant quests becoming MANDATORY was a soul-crushing step backwards; settlements should be able to take care of their damned selves when all 20 settlers are equipped to the gills and there are 200 points of turrets in each.

@Pyrosa: Still not addressing the issue....I think FO is a great game...this started with a comment about Witcher being the greatest all-time...I don't consider it the best this year, let alone one of the best all-time...that's a joke.

As to Fallout, I didn't like the settlements, I didn't like the storylines (any of them) and I still thought it was a slightly better game as it is a true masterpiece in sandbox gameplay....the vast majority of gamers will barely scratch the surface of Fallout....my first playthrough clocked at 100 hours and I couldn't believe how much I missed going through the 2nd time. Some people just get captivated by a narrative and need one to really enjoy a game.

PS. The radiant quests in Fallout are absolutely not mandatory......200 hours in and you are still completing the beginning quests over and over.....how did you ever finish the game?

Yes I love when beautiful, rich, white, pampered stars meet freq each year to pat themselves on the back. They just do not get enough recognition for all they do - like the promotion of a vegan diet in Ethiopia, after all you shouldstill be globally responsible while your are starving to death.

I hate articles that never explain what the acronym is used in a news headline. Curious, I looked it up. SXSW is South by South West - basically a Southern Texas award show for music, film, dog catchers, etc etc etc, by a company called SXSW , that plans and executes conferences, trade shows, festivals, and other events. This makes me laugh. So basically SXNW is a shitty award show put on by a company SXSW that professionally puts on award/conference/trade shows. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_by_Southwest#History

If you are like me and have never heard of this " gaming awards event " (heavy use of air quotes there) That is because this particular event, that started out as a 'local music festival' has over the years commercialized into a -give an award for anything event. Best known for showing lots of movies before giving awards for those movies that B listers would only bother to pick up, it is Austin's biggest festival draw. They have over the years added about every kind of award for what ever happens to be popular that year, 'best hover board on fire award', I think is this year's. They added video games (changed from arcade games), in 2013 because that is what those kids are into these days, in order to make it more hip. Feel free to give as little shit about this award show as CdRed would, if they win.

No context is given to this little known award show mentioned in the article by gamespot. Even though they copy/pasted a ton of shit from the web site to make it look more bona fide. Just chalk it up to a slow news month and gamespot news, heavy use of copy/paste from other sources instead of writing anything on their own.

@michael-ibbett: I think like you mentioned, if they would simply stick with music it would be more impact-ful/ thoughtful.

Another frequent criticism of the SXSW festival is that it has become overly commercialized. In 2013, NPR writer Andrea Swensson wrote that she had decided to stop attending the festival, writing, "I can't help but feel that it has strayed far away from its original premise as a grassroots gathering place for new, undiscovered talent and increasingly feels like a big ol' Times Square billboard-sized commercial."

Link above.
